It's been apparent for months and months he wasn't going to cut it with a team up at the top of The Championship.

So why do we think we've done little about strengthening up front? Even had Scarlett recalled - little of this has been a shock.

Shame that we're entering a game top v 2nd with Jacko the only fit and recognised striker.

I think these will be valid observations/concerns/criticisms if we’re still in this position at the end of the window. It’s obviously a very difficult window to get anything done around strikers. Everyone’s scrabbling around trying to sort things out. IF we haven’t improved on Jacko at the end of Jan this will be the club’s largest (only?) cock up to date under Gamechanger. But there’s still a third of the window left.

Yes I agree, it feels like a bit of momentum has been lost and granted nobody knew Hirst would get injured but the forward position back ups are threadbare.

Just a little disappointing..

Given he scored 20 goals last season I don't think it was a given he wouldn't do a decent job in the championship.

But I think at this level you don't get away with the out of possession work rate not being as high.
Freddie didn't come on v Sunderland so the fact he's gone I don't think is a big issue. There probably is one incoming now.

We've done a lot to strengthen Im sure behind the scenes. It's just that the quality of striker for the price is very hard to find.

When you say we’ve done little about it , I very much doubt that to be the case

With FFP , a lack of the type of player we’re looking for coupled with others wanting strikers all to be considered …..I honestly don’t believe it to be as cut and dry and you and others think

We’re that close to the “promised land “ worth millions. I don’t for one minute think MA and the board would’ve gone into reverse

It’s not the only transfer cock ups under Gamechanger, starting 21/22 without a captain and having Morsy and Walton delayed into the season was a huge mistake, had they arrived earlier we’d have started a lot stronger then.

I agree, we’ve not done well with the striker situation this window and it was probably avoidable. The fact we’ve been left with just Jackson available to play a role that’s vital to this manager’s style is a huge cock up, and I feel this will be the difference between us and our rivals this time.

How do you know it was possible to get Moray and Walton in any earlier?

If you had the choice of a delayed Morsy or an inferior player available immediately, would you have waited too?

Yeah, a bit frustrating. Leif being back is more important imo, but it would be nice to have better options up top,

Your avatar combined with the promotion post makes me wonder how to play this one Bill. 😅 We were very, very keen to strengthen our forward line beyond Hirst and Scarlett in the summer, with Scarlett joining after other transfers couldn't be made. We've been incredibly keen to improve the striker situation since the time that Freddie and Scarlett demonstrated the drop-off was too great (easily identifiable for fans on account of the reduction in rotation for Hirst and increasing rotation + sparsity of minutes for replacement 9s), which came many weeks before the window opened.

We haven't managed to do it yet, which is disappointing, but I'm betting we've put a lot of work into trying to resolve this. Our budget is inflexible due to FFP of course and McKenna has identified LB as another position we want/need to strengthen. Add in that multiple Championship clubs are in great need of a striker this window (every window) and summer Prem loans like Stansfield are happier to bank experience at current clubs than involve themselves in inconsequential promotion pushes elsewhere... it's a small pool and tough challenge.

If we don't bring in two before the end of the window we'll have failed our mission, obviously, but it's all still to play for today.

Whatever happened to the guy we had to put up with in goal until Walton arrived?

No momentum has actually been lost during the transfer window. We were never going to have new players in on Jan 1st and since that date we've won every match.Even if you include Stoke, we're still running in the League at 2 points per game for the month - automatic promotion form.

What you are expressing is a fear for the future, based upon assumptions over projected performance. Last Saturday night showed we are capable of scoring goals, coming back from behind - same as we've been doing all season - with exactly the same players on the pitch as we have available going forwards.

The "loss of momentum" (if, indeed, it really was) started while we still had a full complement, back at the beginning of December. It began against the very toughest opposition and then there were absences which I believe were more crucial than Hirst's, namely Morsy and Davis, plus a couple of players' form dropping a bit (e.g. Broadhead).

To me it is incredible that people are talking about “cock ups” and “failures”. You would think that all the club has to do is identify someone they want to sign, ask the selling club nicely if we can have them, and job done. Football Manager has a lot to answer for.

This post would have fitted just as well here:

So we’ve lost Scarlett, Hirst and now Ladapo by Guthrum 20 Jan 2024 10:40
And what club is going to want to sell us one of their best strikers? Especially with so many still having a very real chance of making the playoffs, as things stand. All the teams down to 13th place are within 5 points of Hull in 6th.

I think it's that trust thing isn't it

When was the last time we made a striker signing late in a window that wasn't a dud....

Ahadme. Scarlett. Further back , Leon Best, Was it watkins? Can't remember his name. Could play cb but for us was striker.

I don't think anyone begrudge any timing of a signing, I think it's just naturally and probably quite often the later the signing in a window the more missed out on targets you've been.

Lucky for us then that we don't rely solely on our strikers for goals. Yes, Hirst is crucial to the way we play, but we have players all over the pitch chipping in. McKenna knew Ladapo was going, so training this week would have revolved around getting the best out of Jackson in that role. Just relax mate, our manager knows what he is doing.

Regardless, it's not as simple as "player in player out". Ladders wants games, and Charlton want him sharpish. We need to get that business done, and the transfer window doesn't revolve around us.

He was very outspoken that we'd lose to Sunderland and it would be the game that ultimately cost us, so an interesting character for sure! No striker even remotely close to our budget would have shifted the betting for Monday's game obviously, as optimistic as I am for it.

I didn't think we'd beat Sunderland either but delighted that we did. The fact I'm more confident about Leicester should be a worry. This optimism is down to Davis being fit (was a big doubt for Sunlan) and Travis' debut. I wonder what his second match will be like...

With Ladapo leaving I really thought that we'd made a signing but waiting for the lads to come back from Dubai to announce it but its not happened. Maybe Monday??

Even then I don't think it could be termed a cock-up. Disappointing, yes. But this whole window for everyone seems very low-key and what movement there is involves several clubs chasing the same strikers.
