Mandatory National Service coming back… on 09:54 - May 26 by NthQldITFC

I wouldn't think that I'm the only rabid anti-T*ry who is, tentatively and in principle, in favour of at least hearing more about the idea. As I understand it from the few brief bits I've heard about it so far (when I can tear myself away from the angst of the managerial situation) it's not all about military service - could it involve things like assisting in social or environmental schemes for example?

I admit I've not read much about the proposal yet, but I'm not ideologically opposed to some form of safe- and well-managed scheme which could be of benefit the young individuals and to a moribund society. I'd be happier if it didn't involve a military aspect, but not entirely against it.

I realise that all of the above may bear no resemblance to what the T*ries are suggesting though, as I'm quite allergic to reading their sh!t!

i agree with all that. but politically what is interesting is that 3 days after calling an election, and we have to assume that they called it in the hope of retaining power, they have fallen back upon the most defensive strategy you can imagine. 'national service' as a catchphrase (as opposed to some modern volunteering scheme) appeals only to the corest and oldest of their core - simultaneously it is poisonous to everyone else. what's next a law to compel men to give up their seats to ladies on the bus? free leather driving gloves on the nhs? It's a strategy for not slipping below 100 seats.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

exactly. and success for reform is the tory wipeout scenario. in defending against that they are losing everyone else. they seem already to be trading any chance of actually winning for a reduced chance of complete annihilation.

having a national scheme for volunteering and including within that training opportunities would be good. you could then use that as an alternative in sentencing. but politically I don't understand their use of the 'national service' dog whistle. anyone responding to that will be the absolute core of tory supporters - are they really worried that even that core is now about to abandon them?

If they gave some incentives to doing it and removed the mandatory nature then it'd be an interesting idea.

But it's always stick instead of carrot when it comes to the younger generations.

My 16 year old daughter listened to Cleverly on TV this morning and said 'I've been volunteering in various roles for three years, why should I then be forced to do more when I'm 18?'
Laughably, he was talking about special constables and fire-fighters. It's pretty scary that the Home Secretary thinks you could train either of those in the time available. If jobs need doing, create jobs you w*nker.

As usual, the Tories have gone for a broad brush demonisation of young people in the hope it chimes with the older folk.

Also, the proposed funding is a redirection of existing community funds - so cuts made elsewhere.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I did enjoy when he was trying to justify it from a liberalism point of view and he said (paraphrasing) "well, we force 16-year-olds into education".

Yes James, but they aren't fooking adults then, are they?

….todays kids being forced into National Service!!?

It’s mind boggling the amount of knicker wetting we’d see.

The more you think about it, the more laughable the practicality of it becomes.

No vapes, no insta, correct pronouns, ADHD, protests, Palestine, nut allergies, non binary, vegans, etc, etc.

Simply unworkable.

No need to downplay ADHD. It's very real and something I've struggled with all my life.

Yes. Got to separate the politicking from the policy. It is a desperate move, from a hideous (and diminishing) bunch of ****s, but I wouldn't mind seeing Starmer (or preferably my idealised actually green party) come out with a social/environmental equivalent.

Im not sure why they restricting it to just 18 year olds.

I think every British passport holder should be forced to do a years compulsory National service in order to receive a pension.

You've had it way to easy for to long it's time to give something back. Plus I'm sure it will put hairs on yer chest an make proper men outta yer etc

Absolutely, it can be extremely debilitating.

And that's not to mention the obvious irony that much of our knowledge about mental health came from those suffering shellshock after having done national service and shipped off to fight.

But these lot aren't the brightest, sadly.

If it’s not too personal a question, what forms does it take? Currently trying to address the possibility of this in a family member.

I think one of the main telltales is people with ADHD often find it very hard to remain on one task and in doing so end up doing a lot of tasks but rarely finishing any of them. This is all just in my experience btw so won't apply to everyone. Also I found (pre-medication) a need to be stimulated by caffeine etc.

For me, inability to concentrate on anything that doesn't reward me. I have never read a book or watched a film because at some point I get distracted by something else. I struggle with social situations because I end up switching off and deep in my own, multiple, thoughts.
Starting a project or hobby, full of enthusiasm and highly focused but getting bored after a few hours and never returning to it. It causes deep self hatred and guilt which is why I won't accept people downplaying it.
Social media is both the best and worst thing that has happened for me. It gives short term reward but is hugely distracting.

At uni years ago I lived with a German who was on an overseas year. They were getting their degree paid for in exchange for national service, which they talked about as a laugh with loads of students living in dorms, partying at night and working on civil Road building projects in the day. I have no idea if that was standard but it seemed a good idea to me. Not war games, but helping society with labour, in exchange for paying your education.

My son has autism so I can empathise and see alot ot those traits in him. He gets upset and depressed that he cant maintain concentration. He apologises to me sometimes and i tell him never to apologise for how he is. Its what makes him unique and thats ok.

He is unique and I hope that during his lifetime, his difficulties will be recognized and supported. It is so easy for a neurotypical person to dismiss his difficulties.
