I was today years old when I found out Step On by The Happy Mondays is a cover version. Every day’s a school day.

Worked in or studied music most of my life, and if I'm ever asked to give examples of perfectly crafted pop songs, this one makes the shortlist

I e often argued in pub conversations that ‘Bubblegum pop’ from 68-72, is more highly skilled songwriting than anything that includes a 15 minute instrumental solo . Making the heart sing in under 3 minutes is far harder than just noodling around on stage for a song lasting 20 minutes that was originally 4 minutes long. Being that target age for those late 60’s/early 70’s bubblegum hits does make me somewhat biased though!

In the days when you made tapes for your mates, a mate of mine did me some Stone Roses. For a while (because I didn't actually read the title he'd written on the inlay card) I thought Ian Brown was singing "I wanna be a door" (as in a gateway to something else).

You weren't the only one..

I use to have this sh1te job in the early 90,s delivering office furniture around London. The bloke driving the van, and therefore in control of the tape deck use to constantly play the Doors and the Jam. Which wasn't that bad except he believed the Jam tune Town called malice was actually called Tom o' Malley and would belt out the Tom O' Malley chorus constantly.

I just couldn't convince him he was wrong.

The only reason I learnt to play bass guitar (and from there, guitar) was due to the bass solo on the 1987 video “Level 42 - Live At Wembley”.

Nearly 40 years later and some very expensive bass guitars, I STILL can’t play it.

You need to watch more bass channels on YouTube! ;-)

He was singing that, he was always a big Jim Morrison fan.

I bought the George Harrison album Cloud Nine in 1987, and until a few weeks ago assumed he wrote this.

I thought i was somewhat well informed on things that aren’t very important or useful in life. Turns out I’m lacking there, also. Anyway, the addition of melons makes it not really a cover. I’m going with that.

I still have The Firm's Star Trekkin' and Morris Minor and the Majors Stutter Rap on vinyl. And I still listen to them occasionally.

On a slightly different tack, I'm still annoyed about a terrible gaffe in what was at the time the leading music paper, the Melody Maker.

In an album review they commented how Levon Helm had clearly hit the rim of the snare drum midway through Ain't No More Cane on The Basement Tapes.

An august music publication like the Melody Maker should know that Richard Manuel was playing drums on that track, with Levon on mandolin.
Richard's drum style is very different to Levon's.

The album came out in 1975.

The mishit drum is at about 1m 53 secs.

A wonderful accordion solo ends the piece.

You have to be a very specific age for this one, Roman Holliday's album, Cookin' On The Roof, is still one of my all time favourites 40 years later. And I'm bass/lead singer in an indie-punk band :-/

In the same vein, Whigfield's Saturday Night is, to my mind, one of the greatest pure pop records ever. Bouncy, joyous and unabashedly pop.

Oh, and going back to a previous post, a mate of mine, Rory, was a member of The Firm, of Star Trekkin' fame. It's a re-enactor beer tent thing in its origin.

Right, back to my Saints albums for some therapy.

Here goes...

The Taylor Swift album Folklore, written with the assistance of The National's Aaron Dessner is a modern day masterpiece.

* breathes *

One of the best albums of recent years. Love The National and Taylor is Bruce Springsteen for the pumpkin spiced latte generation, she’s an excellent song writer.

Perhaps ironic that Jacob Zuma may get back in power as a replacement for Ramalphosa in order for the ANC to stay in government in a coalition all these years later...

Anyway, from the same era we had a lad at school who insisted that the band who recorded 'On The Road Again' and 'Let's Work Together' were called Canned Meat. And we all mistook 'parking rent' in 'All Right Now' for another word and sang along accordingly.
