Ipswich have €22m bid turned down - Fotis Ioannidis 14:54 - Jun 15 with 47941 viewsburnbudgiesburn

Greek journo

Whats that? £18.5m?

Looks like a higher level George Hirst so stylistically would have fit but you never know if Towns name is gonna be linked by agents to bump the price or if its genuine.

Yes, same. Assume there is at least something in that. Makes sense as a target, doesn't it?

Yer, would be a great buy. Rodon, that Greak lad and Sheaf would be a good start to our summer transfer business

Let's say they're happy to deal at €25m... That's £21m. Amortise that over five seasons, that's £4m a year for P&S, right?

I'm no expert but amortisation would be over the length of the contract, I assume from my scant knowledge of amortisation in general. So I'd say yes if we sign him on a five-year deal.

Seems has been reported in various places in Greece, presumably the language and alphabet has meant other stories haven't spread. We do have Greek speakers on here - I remember the night of the 2004 Euros final - so perhaps they may find other stories.

Seems like Sporting Lisbon fans believe he's nailed on there, but local Greek reports I can see state he's attracted to the PL...

One would assume we wouldn't bid if his agent hadn't given us the 'come on'.

I believe there is something in Sheaf, not sure he's top of the list, but definitely on it,

Yes, sorry Phil, I should've added 5-year deal (surely we'd offer that or 4yr with 1yr option?).

Doesn't seem too outlandish on the balance sheet IF you stay up. But then I guess we could recoup that or most of it if we went down?

I would say you’re right, seems we are not far off given the figures quoted in being able to talk to the player. Few on here said we wouldn’t spend £20m. Whilst we won’t sign player after player at this level the going rate for young, top up-coming talent is in this region. Also worth mentioning that for us to convince McKenna to sign he must have fancied his chances and would have known the budget available. Be nice to get a couple of the bigger ones over the line early.

Sheaf is very keen to come - and that comes from 'someone' who's spoken to him directly (!)

What do we think we could deal at here. 10m-12m region perhaps. Looked the part and would allow Coventry to reinvest and go again. He was on a lot of people’s wanted list for obvious reasons.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

I don't think we should be surprised we're being linked with good players. I really don't think McKenna would've turned Brighton down if he didn't think we'd significantly upgrade the squad this summer.

'However, it’s anticipated that Town could come back with an increased offer nearer to the €25-€30 million region.' (£21-£25m)

You think the willingness to spend that on one player indicates that we understand Omari is unlikely to return?

Yeah I think you're looking in that region IMO. Coventry want a touch more from what I gather, but Sheaf may be able to put the squeeze on a little to get a deal done.

Be delighted if we can get it done - he looks a proper player. A real coup to get him ahead of a team playing Champions League football if it does happen.

Well, this is it. I think we're going to realise the pull of the PL soon, especially if Ioannidis turns down Sporting for us.

The thing is, I'm not so sure the Greek League to Portuguese League is much of a step up in class IMO. Similar issue of a top-heavy league dominated by the top 3/4 and VERY weak below that. Coupled with the lack of broadcast money i.e. wages, makes it a less appealing prospect than Town I'd say.

If he gets double figures for us, he's all of a sudden on the radar of the likes of Spurs, Villa etc.

Indeed, we'd be a lure for players who haven't done enough to get interest from more established Premier League clubs. Ioannidis's profile is very much the sort of player we've gone for domestically over the last couple of seasons.

I agree. People need to get in their heads we won’t be signing players for 1-2m. 20m for a player at premier league level is your bang average. Difference for us is we can’t afford to make too many mistakes at these levels.

I never said we wouldn't spend that money.

I said it was expensive for the level of risk (IMO). When we're trying to get established I just think we will go with someone who has played in the Prem before. As a newly promoted club we can't give someone a year to settle in.

With that said, the club might be convinced he is going to hit the ground running and if we got him there's no doubt it would be an exciting signing.

Truly impaired.

Which isn't really a bad thing as his value rises and in the shorter term we will be a selling club like Brighton/Palace.

And remembering how much some of our fans struggled to pronounce Counago, I think Ioannidis will be a wonderful addition.

That's what I thought as soon as McKenna signed his contract. He is very ambitious, and the discussion with Ashton and Schwartz must have been centred around the overall ambition of ITFC. Meaning, are we fishing in the £5M pond, or the £25M lake? Looks like its the latter, with £25M fishes swimming around.
Total summer budget probably approaching £100M.
