Last season I carried over 14 away points. Despite having a SB membership, all the away games I could get to (due to work/family commitments) were sold out and I found myself continually behind the curve of not quite having enough points to be able to get tickets. I know there are many like me, who always found the away games sold out just ahead of them. In the end, I only made it to one away League game despite trying to get tickets for loads more.
If the club wants to sell SB memberships, this season it just isn't a viable option for people like me - every match will go to those who were in the higher points bubbles. As most teams in the Prem only allocate 3,000 tickets, that means that if you are not in the 3,000 or so (maybe 4,000) fans with the highest points carried over form 23/24, there is simply no point in buying a SB membership. Unless that is, there is a ballot introduced.
I have no problem at all with the most loyal fans continuing to get the first 2,000 or so tickets. But thousands of fans caught in the void where they don't quite have enough points, and can't get any more points, and will be unable to get to any away games at all. Unless a portion of the tickets, maybe 500-1,000, are made available via a ballot to the other SB members.
If there is a ballot for some tickets at each game, then it becomes worthwhile purchasing SB memberships again. If they don't, there is no point for anyone who doesn't fall into the top 4,000 of SB points holders (guessing this is 20+ points, maybe 25) in purchasing a membership.

I am definitely one who isn't minted and had to really scrape to afford tickets for the boy and I over the last two seasons. I went without holidays and going out/takeaways so he could have those memories. Not helped by being made redundant and becoming single which made money even tighter. But I made those choices. The lad also suffered from many ailments (mainly migraines) over the season on weekdays and unfortunately missed several days of school which he had to catch up in his own time (I'm sure the school really knew he wasn't ill).

So, just agreeing that peopkle who went to the games are not necessarily minted - just change their personal priorities and make sacrifices

And Roverham...

Exactly this. Whilst accepting there are genuine reasons and people who could not, there are also a large number who chose not to for whatever reason over the last couple of seasons and now we are top league they want the chance to visit some of the big grounds.

Yes, I am selfish I'll happily admit but why should those 'newbies' (for want of a better word) have priority over anyone with any points? Those wiht even five should have priority over those with zero in my mind

But appreciate this is just my view and of course suits my personal circumstance

Whilst I do feel sorry for those that can’t get to the games they want, I am struggling to understand how you couldn’t get to many away games last year if you started with 14 points.

I didn’t have a GC in the League one season so despite going to 8 away games, I started the Champ season with the token 5 points for having a SB membership. I was still able to go to 13 away games: QPR, Sheff Wed, Southampton, Huddersfield, Rotherham, Middlesbrough, Leeds, Stoke, Leicester, PNE, Millwall, Blackburn & Coventry.

The only ones I couldn’t get tickets for were Birmingham, WBA & Norwich.

Yep, I started on 5 points, but managed to get to 19.

Still annoyed, as I did 11 away season before, but didnt have a GC at the time (didnt need one!)

Couldn’t have put it better myself and is exactly right, people must think I have bags full of money but I don’t

Makes me laugh that people keep saying they didn’t have the time etc to go to away games the last few years but now suddenly seem to have to time, how convenient

All this ‘I couldn’t get any tickets last season as didn’t have enough points’ is a load of sh!te I know of people that started on 5 points at the start of the season and managed to get to every game and now sit on nearly 30 points, when ever anyone on here is asked what games they wanted to do but missed out on the answer is always Watford It’s games like that is why the new system was put in place!!

Totally agree I live 150 miles away from Ipswich and have a season ticket and attended every Saturday away game despite the cost and time it took away from my own business.

Yep, same scenario here but ended up one behind on 18. Got tickets for every game I could get to other than Norwich. Also was annoyed about not having points from League one away games carried over but in the end that didn’t matter.

There is a universal price for away fans.

Match day prices at Portman Road will increase significantly remember there are 20% fewer games a season.
[Post edited 19 Jun 2024 10:20]

Why does 20% fewer games mean a significant increase in prices? There is more that £100 million of extra TV money coming in that will far more than offset the revenue from 4 matches.

But for me the is how it is....two weeks into my pay check and I'm in the overdraft. It's stressful and I hate it but for my lad this is my priority so he has those memories. Those memories that I had a a fan starting out in the mid 80s
My post was merely that not everyone who travels is minted - is a misconception which is frustrating

He is doing Btec sport so it's relevant and as for Dussleford trip it was a German trip. Life lessons and learning for a couple of half days at a school where the teacher gives them a book then sticks her headphones in and listen to music

So you never took time off school? a few half days for key games isn't going to harm him. some of those games (Barnsley in particular ) will live with him forever. But then I forgot what a judgemental person you were

Hang on a sec, I think I've got the answer for those unhappy with a ballot. What about if there were other ways to get the points than just away match ticket purchases?

Purchase a new shirt - 10 points.
Be a TownTV subscriber - 2 points.
Programme? Certainly sir, have an extra half a point.
ITFC toaster that toasts a horse onto your bread - 5 points.
TWTD up-arrows - 1 point per 1000.
etc.

This way it encourages merch sales, discourages touts/non-Town fans AND stops the points system being a closed shop.
[Post edited 19 Jun 2024 14:24]

Not a bad idea this. Assuming the usual 5 points for membership I start the season on a tatalising 19 points, so I'd love the opportunity to get myself into the 20+ bracket as I think that's where you'll need to be to get a stab at tickets for most games at grounds with 30,000+ seats.

Feels kinda dirty to pretty much buy points, but I'd mitigate any feelings of guilt or shame by convincing myself that merch sales can only be of ultimate benefit to the club in the long run. Besides which, I want a horse on my toast!

I already have commented (maybe you missed it, bottom of page 2) to make the point that you said before you went without food to get tickets and now you've changed that to "takeaways", which is a bit different.

I have nothing against you other than your exaggerating to make your points.

I think I'd have more respect for you doing it if you had the honesty to just own it properly.

I have a pretty solid understanding of the BTEC Sport curriculum and there's ZERO reason at all that you have to miss school and traipse up north for an away game. It's BTEC Sport not BTEC Only Sport you Support. You can't just say football = sport and say that therefore missing the rest of his lessons is justified.

Back to the post - I think a priority and ballot mix is probably the best outcome here (that's realistic anyway). For most of the 3k games - 2-2.5k for past travels and 500-1k in a ballot?

I think people need to acknowledge that this is a very tough choice for the club and not as simple as superfans who deserve tickets and glory hunters that don't. They need to maximise revenue, bring in new fans (that will become the 'superfans' of the future) and try to keep existing fans happy. They now have a situation where there is a huge demand for their product and limited space after many years of us all assuming we can pretty much just turn up to whichever games we fancy. This will cause issues that are not simple to resolve. I've got a membership with over 20 points so I guess I may be OK for tickets for most away games but I haven't got a season ticket so I have no idea if I'll be able to get any home tickets at all such will be the demand. Am I more deserving and loyal as an away fan but a gloryhunter as a home fan? Of course not, it's just how circumstances have worked out.

So we are bad people for attending an absolute fck load of games, even if we couldn’t afford it at times, and couldn’t really justify being there by missing family events or booking AL that we really didn’t have enough of…

Those are the things that get me.

People seem to think ‘oh they’ve done loads of away games they have loads of money and spare time’

No we fcking don’t, we’ve made sacrifices, prioritised ITFC way too often.

So yes, we should have priority over those that have opted to not use their AL, or haven’t stretched themselves financially.

no one should get priority tbh, it's an away game. You don't purchase an away season ticket, therefore imo all away tickets should be for general sale. Upset people for sure, but it's fair to all.

Absolute ridiculous comment of course those who've made the commitment over the years get priority.

Here is my take on a solution that could be viable and suit everyone to a degree.....try to stay with me here.

First 800 tickets go to a ballot of the 1000 fans with most points.

Next 700 tickets go to a ballot of the next 1000 with most points

Next 600 tickets go to a ballot of the next 1000 with most points

Next 500 tickets go to a ballot of the next 1000 with most points

Next 300 go to a ballot of the next 1000 with most points

Remainder go to a ballot of anyone else.

This way the top 1000 will still get to 80% of games if they want, the next 1000 70% and the next 1000 60%.

If there are remaining tickets for each echelon they can be added to the final allocation. This allows people who would never get to any games the probable chance of a few and it allows the die-hards who have been to most to still get to majority of games.

The only issue would be when people want to go with friends etc.....maybe for that could be a scenario where can apply for 2 tickets and either successful or both or none.

Should I contact MA?

I got very lucky with tickets early on in this season having not had a GC in league one, started on a lowly 5 points. Managed to get tickets for every away game apart from Plymouth which was by choice and not through tickets selling out.

My point is that at the start of the season I thought the whole system was unfair and a closed shop, obviously now carrying 29 points + 5 for next season and being on potentially 34 points I think the system is perfectly fair. Most people only think a system is unfair if it affects them or their friends and family. It was hard work, numerous times was touch and go having to be super quick refreshing the page at 9:59 constantly but it could be done, and I am sure it will be similar this season.

I do think that not all points are equal though, Sunderland away on a Sunday evening is 1 away point whereas QPR on a Saturday at 3pm is the same, I would like to see some kind of bonus if you like for the fans that did more miles or night games etc.

"Most people only think a system is unfair if it affects them or their friends and family."

Equally, people can think it's fair if they're alright.

"I would like to see some kind of bonus if you like for the fans that did more miles or night games etc."

Not everyone lives in Ipswich though. Sunderland away isn't tricky if you live up North!

I take your points, you put the work in, but what you did would have cost a fair bit of money (not just in tickets but the travelling costs, food and drink etc.) Not everyone can do that. So you get to a point where the least well off are priced out of football. It's either do loads of games or you won't get to do any in the future. That, for me, is wrong.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
