We should have expected it after all he did use pre tournament friendlies to play an experimental side.

Southgate out. (n/t) on 19:49 - Jun 20 with 2878 views | Crawfordsboot | Remember 1. Before the tournament all the pundits were pretty much in agreement with the squad and the side selected. 2. Southgate brought through a lot of the young players in the squad via really exciting and attacking U21 and U19 teams 3. As Walker said after the game - “Gareth wants us to play attacking football with freedom, sometimes that is not possible” We don’t have a God given right to be the best. Today the players were seriously off the pace. I seem to recall Town underperforming once or twice last season. It happens and this is just the group stages of tournament football, - a notoriously difficult stage to get through. Tonight saw a very disappointing performance but I for one am expecting much better to come. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

1. Not interested in the pundits. The squad is the manager’s job. 2. It really doesn’t matter whether he brought these through the U21s, 19s or through the Tescos at Copdock. He has no idea how to get the best out of them. 3. Walker came out with the usual nonsense all players do after serving up garbage. We saw it year after year during Evans’ time here, so know what that looks like. No we don’t have the god given right to be the best. We don’t have the right to be anything any more than any other country. But it is right to expect something a little more than a bunch of confused, bereft of ideas, possibly disinterested people standing about like the late night Ayia Napa boozers. Group stage tournament football? It really isn’t difficult. That’s shown by England on four points when they deserved, with a following wind, one. Disappointing performance? Calling it inept, pathetic, embarrassing would be generous. With Southgate, I’m not expecting anything more than him stinking out the dugout for the next two or three games before the players head off on their TUI flights.

I'm pretty sure there was wide spread concern at the lack of a left side.

Southgate out. (n/t) on 08:57 - Jun 21 with 2309 views | CrayonKing | What really shocked me was his interview after the game where he said "we didn't press like we wanted to" That side showed no inclination whatsoever to press in the first half. If he'd said "its tournament football, we have to manage energy levels so sometimes we have to sit off" then I could at least understand there was some sort of plan, even if I don't necessarily agree with it. But if the plan really was to press the opposition and then they come out and do nothing of the sort, then something is deeply wrong.

That is a really interesting thought. This tournament is over 4 weeks long and during that time I would imagine they will do no fitness work - and I suspect that will mean the players' fitness will drop off towards the end. If I was planning to be in the best possible condition for the final I would have been continuing that fitness work until as late in the build up as possible - leaving the squad pretty tired for the early games, but in a relatively strong position later in the competition. That might also explain his willingness to rely on Shaw's recovery for his left sided option. My sense is that Southgate is good at this strategic prep stuff, and I am expecting us to be increasingly aggressive pressers as the games get harder in the later rounds. We just need to get there.

This has to be up there with the biggest bedwetting threads this board have ever seen. Yes, it was an awful performance, but we will win the group, and take it from there. Southgate is the second most successful manager ever, and there must be a reason for that.

Kane has said they weren't sure how they were meant to press. A good point I heard was England set-up exactly as Denmark expected, Denmark changed their system so were nothing like we expected and Southgate didn't change the tactics/instructions. If it was McKenna in charge the players would have a plan B and C already in place, maybe TAA goes to right wing back, Foden to No. 10 and Saka in up front and we match their 3412 system, not just cross your fingers and hope something changes... Suspect that the OP is being a little tongue in cheek, and I agree that GS has a pretty good track record. I think there are those that are trying to rationalise the recent poor performances in the context of the quality of player available - which is where I am. Hence the "there is probably more to this than meets the eye" position and there are those that think GS has ended up in this role because he is an FA yes man who is stuck in the past and if Pep was in charge we would have demolished all that come before us by now as ever with all things right now, there is very little middle ground
