In talks with Philogene on 10:39 - Jun 27 by PhilTWTD | I've not watched any of that, if he's doing well there then perhaps he might be looked at again, or by Brighton, of course. Looking at his performances here, I thought he tended to do very well off the bench but less so as a starter and I think we'd want more than that, particularly moving up a division. |
I see him as a Reuser type acquisition. Steps up into that role in the Prem too. Agree with Joe re Copa. [Post edited 27 Jun 2024 10:43]

That is an interesting comparison. Took Reuser half a season to make an impression in the Premier League and I think Sarmiento still has a long way to go in his development. Was great coming off the bench, don't get me wrong, but when he started he didn't seem to have the discipline to do what was required.

…match “finishers” is absolutely intrinsic to the way KM plays football? Sarmiento is great in that role. It’s not just about starters anymore. Come on Phil, less of the archaic views on football! [Post edited 27 Jun 2024 10:48]

I'd take him if a permanent deal was doable at a decent price but not on loan. I'm not sure he's ready yet to be a regular starter, he's still more of a project, and with only two Prem loans allowed we need to use them to inject top quality and/or some Prem experience. Taking Sarmiento on loan to be a bench option and occasional starter wouldn't be a good use of a loan spot for me. If we can get him permanently that changes things as we'd be developing him for our own benefit and I see him as someone with serious potential.

Personally thought there was a step up in his performances after our 2 week break caused by Coventry's FA Cup semi-final. Due to fixture congestion/international commitments, he'd never had that much time 'on the grass' with McKenna. Would be quite excited by what he could do with a full pre-season under his belt.

He looked really good after he'd had that 2 week period before last few games, and guess that was first time he'd spent any time on the training ground really since signing. I think he's just one of those who is always going to pop up in big moments and make things happen - I'd love to see him on a permanent transfer here, it feels doable

He's not young young anymore and Brighton have players ahead of him who are even younger I believe so it may be that they see this as the time to cash in and let him go permanently. If a deal can be done I'd be happy to have him back permanently, would be less interested in him being one of our two Prem loans.

Certainly agree with the big moments thing, definitely that Reuser knack of popping up and taking a chance when it mattered. You and Shefford may well be right about longer on the training ground benefiting him. Just thought we saw his limitations from the start in games like Cardiff away and think we might be better off with someone with experience at Premier League level. That's my overall feeling anyway, that getting more Premier League experience in should be a priority given there are so few top flight appearances across the squad.

Ha! That is true but you're limited on squad numbers, so ideally you wouldn't want players just to play 30 minutes or whatever. The management could view him differently, of course. They may well feel they can progress him quickly, or my criticism is nonsense, of course.

Suppose it depends on the price that was agreed and if his wages are acceptable for a player who would be on for 20 minutes tops every other game. Could be we have him for a season and sell him of a small profit should we stay up if his Copa appearances and having another year of Prem experience behind him add some value [Post edited 27 Jun 2024 11:03]

In talks with Philogene on 10:38 - Jun 27 by Parky | If we somehow end up with Philogene and Hutchinson in our squad next season, it will have been a remarkable transfer window and a massive statement that we’re not just there to make up the numbers. |
See also the Greek lad. He’d be some coup given the reported interest in him.

Suspect his current value is greater than when we took him on loan, a good reason to do the deal.

As we've seen with Man City, if a club i big enough they can seemingly do what they want unfortunately.

Thats what I'm getting at - if we have agreed a top half Championship price for him and he is able to come here an not cause too much of an issue with the wage bill, then we have a good player that knows the system who can offer something to the squad. Even if he does just OK, then we will get back what we pay for him plus a little more.

Playing off the bench as an impact sub in the Premier League is a step up from doing the same in the Championship. I'd have Sarmiento back in a heartbeat, but it really depends on more than whether we like him. It needs to be the right deal for him personally, for the club, and be at the right price as well as suiting the balance of the squad that we are putting together. Just assume that loans won't be coming back, then if they do it's a pleasant surprise!

100% would try and sign him on a perm. Has a decent ceiling and he has the ability to change a game from 60 mins onwards which could be invaluable next season. He is one of those players that definitely makes things happen, particularly against tired legs. He has taken his form with us to the Copa. As mentioned above, I see him as a Reuser type. Reuser scored six or so important goals in 00/01 in the prem. Sarmiento will too, as we challenge at the top next season. I'd settle for Europa but CL would be nice. [Post edited 27 Jun 2024 17:48]
