Glastonbury 17:45 - Jun 27 with 7981 views | textbackup | I’ve never been, would love to. Anyway, I see people arriving on like the Wednesday, can you leave site to restock on beers/food? Often wonder as some people go walking in with hardly anything on them.

Glastonbury on 10:26 - Jun 28 by Gogs | That levellers story from 94 is a total urban myth. I was there in 94. Yes, the fence got broken down and a few people got in, but nowhere near the numbers claimed. As for the reported 300,000 odd watching the levellers, don’t make me laugh, I doubt there were even half that many people on site in total, let alone watching them. |
I think I was also there in 94. Though you know what they say, if you remember the 90,s you weren't really there. So I'm not sure you were doing it completely right if you remember such details. Didn't see the Levellers either, though probably outta laziness

As far as I remember it didn’t seem any busier around the main stage when the levellers were on in 94 than it did for any other big name headline act around the same period. Radiohead in the 97 mud felt just as busy, certainly. There were always loads of people at the main stage when the headliners were on, and that does include the levellers in 94, but I just don’t get where this story cropped up from, that there were 300,000 watching them. No way is it true. I never remember it being mentioned at the time, nor was it spoken about at the festivals in 95 and 97, it just seems like a Chinese whisper that’s developed over recent years

Glastonbury on 21:40 - Jun 27 by DinDjarin | Middle class snobfest. Died after they banned the travelers, double died with the super fence and triple died when they allowed Emily to start booking the bands. Just a glorified pop festival these days. And yes I have been about 10 times. |
Everything changes and the people who have got older love to say how much better things were when they were young This applies to most things in life, including football, politicians, the FA Cup & Glastonbury.

I was also there and no way there were "300k watching the Levellers". I was camped overlooking the Pyramid Stage that year and wandered down when they came on. I got near enough before veering left to get elsewhere to be pretty sure that mooted figure is nonsense. Saying that, I also remember going to watch the Orb instead of the Levellers and I just checked and they weren't even playing that year (1993 maybe) so what the hell do I know

My sister went in 94, she saidtThey bowled in shouting "We're the f***** Levellers, F*** Capitlism" She also said the Campsites were nowhere near as crowded as they are now (we were in Michaels Mead that year I think, or nearabouts anyway). The crowd for the Levellers was busy but manageable...until they came on stage when a huge surge pushed the front half uncomfortably close to each other and the stage. About 3 songs in loads of people left to watch (I think) the Pretenders headline the NME stage. Having seen pictures of the crowds for the Stones, Kylie etc I cannot believe that the Levellers had even half the amount these acts had.

Me and a few friends did every free rave/party/festival we could ( we considered Glastonbury to be free ) during the early- mid 90,s if we were in the country. And I have to confess to barely seeing/remembering any headline or mainstage act. Partly due to not really being into that kinda music ( in 94 I would have almost only listened to jungle ). Though I do sorta remember seeing Nirvana at Reading a year or 2 before. It was wet, muddy and if I was driving i would have left 5-6 hours earlier..

There is 100% an element of that but it is also true to say that the demographic of Glasto attendees has changed and that it has become more of a pop festival as well. You only have to look at how the line ups have changed, you didn't have the likes of Madonna playing Glasto back in the 80s or Take That headlining in the 90s whereas now there are pop acts playing every year.

Glastonbury on 08:24 - Jun 28 by ITFC_Forever | The Levellers still hold the record for the biggest stage-front crowd in 1994... because so many people would get in for free, it would triple the number of people on site. The super-fence was inevitable, it was always going to come, but the first year they had it, everyone who paid and went said how empty it was - which just showed the scale of the number of people that used to bunk in. Emily has absolutely killed it. R&B and pop acts shouldn't be anywhere near Glastonbury... each to their own etc, and there is a place for them if that's your thing - but Glastonbury isn't it. |
I was there for that, didnt miss one in the 90's and jumped the fence each time. Only time I had a ticket was the year the super fence went up and it turned nice and safe overnight. Liked it when it was almost lawless and edgy. It is what is is now and am sure its fantastic if that's what you are wanting but not for me.

But aren't they kind of middle class, er, capitalists? I may have misremembered but pretty sure in the late 80s and early 90s everyone except for well heeled crustie kids scoffed at the image.

What do you call someone who falsely boasts that they remain at Worthy Farm year round? An Eavis impersonator. Whereas an Elvis impersonator is very keen for an announcement to be made that they have left the building.

Never done Glasto but used to do V.. Those portaloos are a nightmare and on the final day the ground would be soaked with p1ss yards from the bogs and they smelt to high heaven. I would always injest a load of Imodium and not eat for the duration of the festival. Not sure I could do Glastonbury these days, in fact I'm not sure I would want to now.

In one of the Festival programs circa 1980's there was a piece that said.... Don't moan if you have to queue for water from one of the few taps dotted around the camp site 'cos some Africans have to walk 6 miles there and 6 miles back. Don't moan if you have to sh1t in one of the cubicles 'cos some Africans don't have a toilet. Don't moan if you have to queue for one of the 2 telephones that are available 'cos some Africans don't have access to a phone. It went on with further examples and ended with a DONATE to Water Aid / Oxfam plug.

Jacqui Abbott has suffered from poor health over the past couple of years. Saw Heaton and Abbott in 2015 and they were brilliant. Heaton has a fantastic back catalogue.
