It’s an odd one. I was delighted when he finally cleared off, as I’d lost all respect for him and the way he went about it… I lost my voice howling abuse at him, for his antics during the Southampton game… I can’t help but associate him with the most depressing period I’ve ever known as a Towen fan… But, I think I’d be quietly delighted to have him in a job share role with Super Sam.

I am compelled to agree, the Journo reporting it is usually not one to mess about with his stories.

Downes.. on 19:44 - Jun 28 with 9694 views | Exiled2Surrey | Earlier today West Ham fans seem to believe that KWP had already nodded through the move. The “Ipswich also thought to be interested” line feels a bit agent-y, but I would love this to be true - he was pretty useful against us and at the play off final

How likely is it Phil? Looks like he’s agreed personal terms with Southampton so maybe unlikely?
Downes.. on 20:03 - Jun 28 with 9382 views | jasondozzell | Would be excellent to see him return. A brilliant footballer with a brain. Great technical ability married with work rate and desire. A class above in the play off games for Saints. Bizarre that he got a few boos when he came back. Can only assume many of those from fans who came back once club started to have success again. Anyone who followed Town during the years before will know that Downes was one of if not the best player during that period despite all the challenges. Always worked hard and never gave up the fight. Was playing well below his level and so could not be blamed for wanting to secure a move. Should never have been playing in league one full stop. He played on for us when we were a complete basket case for longer than most would have done. I remember seeing his debut in pre season against Posh in 2017. Same then as now - get the ball and look for the right pass. Always a step ahead. A humble player - no ego or showboating. Just intelligent football. Spoke out about mental health after that period when he was overthinking things before he went on loan to Luton. Did an interview with Chambers I think? Admired him for that Also loved that there was a bit of a devil in him. Need a bit of that. Remember when Lambert had to frogmarch him off at Cambridge pre season!! Would be great to have him back in blue. [Post edited 28 Jun 2024 20:05]

And me. I’m not usually that keen on looking back, but he’s developing into a very good player. He’s probably not what we need next to Morsy. He’s more of a Morsy replacement, but apart from that he’d be a great addition to the squad.

It sounds like a lot hinges on what Kyle Walker-Peters decides to do

I don't understand this narrative. He wanted a move to the Premier, Ipswich as a club, team, business were going backwards and very quickly, everyone could see it. If we had had any other decent players they'd have wanted out too. We were a basketcase under Evans and Lambert. What did he do that was so wrong? Asked not to be selected for one match? Maybe there's more to it that I'm not aware of, maybe there's more from Downes side to tell too. I'd love to see him here, great age, Prem experience and a real classy player with a bit of bite.

If Flynn was astute he would no doubt have paid attention to Teddy Bishop. That kid was dynamite as a youth but I suspect our shabby medical set up really pulled down the ceiling of his potential. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Flynn was concerned about loyalty to town ruining his career - to which I could understand.

Fee might be an issue from our perspective. Not sure how many £15m/£20m fees we'd be up for spending and we'll need a central striker.

Thought his name would pop up this summer. Wonder who he’ll choose if fee is agreed with both clubs.. that would tell us all we need to know.

Starting point: We need a new CM in to improve the squad and for succession planning, and they need to be a good 5 years or so younger than Luongo. I appreciate that Downes is not our player and we are where we are, but my word it would be gutting to pay £15m+ for someone we let go for comparative peanuts in full knowledge of his qualities. Anyway, that's the Club accountant's problem, I've always liked the guy, always thought he was quality in a role that is not always glamorous, and was disillusioned that he didn't get enough game time at a much much lower level. Thinking logically about it for a moment, if West Ham paid £12m for him 2 years ago, and he's 2 years older now (will be 26 in January....), and got loaned out to a lower division, how can he realistically be worth more than £12m in the market? They want a £3m+ profit on a player who hasn't been good enough to get in their team and is now coming to his peak? Hmm, not sure, Spammers. Whatever the fee is, it would be galling to pay it, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be well worth it.

Although we seem to be linked with players valued in that sort of fee bracket for multiple positions (Greaves and the Dutch guy at the back, Downes and Sheaf in midfield, Omari and Philogene in the attacking roles and the Greek guy up front) so it sort of feels like we maybe aiming to make quite a number of ‘big fee’ signings. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of lower fee links.

Indeed, but we're not going to be able to afford all of them. Johnson will come in on a free, probably one or two others ideally, then there'll be a few £5m-ish signings probably.

I know his agent at Wasserman, we tried very hard last year to get him, but we couldn't compete then with Southampton on wages. I know he's spoken to McKenna, reckon we stand a really good chance if they want him...especially given his partner is from Ipswich and he's still good mates with Wolfie. I'd love to see him back.
