I genuinely believe that one of reasons for Man Utd being widely detested is Tyldesley’s slobbering over them every time he got a CL match involving them.

Can't say I'm a fan of any TV commentators really. I usually mute the TV and sync up to the Radio 5 commentary as long as Sutton isn't on co-commentary.

I’ve always detested his commentary style, and I couldnt stand the “poor me” cr@p from him when he was demoted, only for it to be resurrected when they finally got rid of him. Until this thread, I thought it was just me…..

It’s irrelevant to me whether he is a nice bloke or the love child of Vlad the Impaler. I don’t want to know him. All I know is that like Ryorry his voice alone is enough to set my teeth on edge.

He reminds me of Lawrenson with his patronising and monotone drawl. Unless England win 5-0 he’s utterly depressing and Samaritans probably dread hearing that he’s covering a game.
At least he gets excited by games and goals etc, Jonathan Pearce is the one I really can't get behind due to being so matter of fact about everything, I could swear the tone of his voice never changes.

I've always nailed my colours to the mast on this. He's a bloody rubbish commentator, even worse than Peter Drury who I remember a couple of decdes ago or whenever clearly didn't know the then rules around away goals in Champs League. Amazingly he won commentator of the year recently. Two hapless clown commentators. Beeb no better... Mowbray e.g. is jaw droppingly bad.

Jonathan Pearce was brilliant when he was doing the commentary on Capital Radio during Euro 96. Especially the 4 goals against Holland. He went completely downhill when he switched to TV.

You can as far as I’m concerned. Truly awful. Talks utter nonsense if you can steel yourself enough to listen to his drivel. There is something a bit creepy/oily about him too.

Agree. Peter Jones was the best. With Bryon Butler or Maurice Edelston they described the game. They painted a picture of what was happening and you could see it unfold as you listened.
If a game was on and I was free I’d listen to it. They were the masters. As you rightly say, happy days.

Alan Green refused to visit Russia for the world cup and next time his contract with the Beeb came up, it was not renewed. I presume he's happily retired now
Tbf by the end he was increasingly a parody of himself, spent more time moaning about the commentary view or something else that had annoyed him at a game then tell you what was happening.
But at least he knew how to broadcast on radio, a skill modern commentators don't have.
As for Tyldesley, used to dislike his style of commentary, mainly as it was so biased to Man Utd, I've come to warm to him lately after he was given the push towards the exit, though I thought he was terrible last night, not that the game helped

Never minded him. Has a good voice for it. People really get riled by commentators. I think he was fine. Bit the best but decent. At the end of the day the game is the key part and they just need to compliment it.
I find co-commentators generally more irritating as many just haven't done their homework which is the job. Someone like lawrenson doing an fa cup game when he's done zero homework on the lower league teams...in some cases us
