i haven't regularly interacted with him - though his sciencey posts are often interesting. i also haven't seen the threads that became fractious. but i do think he can get quite shirty quite quickly when people don't agree with him. he does expect to be right. so he is perhaps wound up when others wouldn't be. banning has to have some objective standard of bad behaviour - people shouldn't be banned because some posters get wound up when others wouldn't. |  |

I actually removed this post initially but was asked for it to be restored given the responses. Re your other point, I very much doubt those posters make any difference to the overall revenue, certainly aren't big drivers to the site by any means and actually cost in terms of me having to deal with hassle. And if that was a consideration, then I wouldn't spend so much time trying to stop people posting that sort of thing.
Things have reached a bit of a head on this front. The users involved know who they are and if things don't change then they won't be welcome to post. But, of course, no doubt if I that happens I'll get stick from other users regarding their exit. |  | | |

It was childish and intended to poke fun at him over my "abducted by aliens" comment. And I changed it PDQ , and to quote Stokie "no worries about the avatar".
My avatar was a harmless wind up but quite immature. Odd that I have never once seen you comment on the countless avatars over the years that have been far more sinister and aimed in my direction. Such as one poster using the bombed King David Hotel solely to bait me. Or the "Zionism is Anti Semitism" avatar. Or the "FCK ISR" avatar that had to be removed. I've probably been on the receiving end of a dozen or more racist, baiting avatars that are designed to attack me for my family's ethno/religious background. So next time it happens I expect to see you at the forefront of the condemnation.
Well actually I don't expect that. So enough of the faux outrage.

I think some of the people Phil (and others to be fair) is losing patience with aren't necessarily the people you're thinking of, but there's little value in discussing that here.
It's a shame Stokie has felt the need to have a break because of the behaviour of a small group of posters who mainly seem to want to provoke others. |

I've always been agitated with tribalism online (here and otherwise). Most of us bleed blue, so if people take a chill pill, keep banter between mates, and let those who enjoy a bit of a scientific debate have their place - its a better place is it not?
I can think of maybe 2, or 3 bans / absences that have made this place better, otherwise, when we lost one, we lose a blue. That ain't groovy. | |
