Your favourite politicians 18:02 - Jul 5 with 6971 views | gtsb1966 | Past or present. We've made it pretty clear who we detest over the last few weeks but what about your favourites. For me it's John Smith. Robbed of being our prime minister . We'll never know but I think he would've been brilliant for this country.

Good call on those two (and John Smith in the OP). I'd add Tony Benn to that list too. I caught him a couple of times on his speaking tours in his later life. Always a good listen. I'd never accept his policy of closing down the pirates in the 60s though.

Your favourite politicians on 18:39 - Jul 5 with 4372 views | bluelagos | Always liked Shirley Williams. Whenever she spoke on am issue I always seemed to agree with her. (On Question time or whatever) Same with Caroline Lucas now. Edit. Appreciate Shirley Williams and the gang of 4 effectively guaranteed Thatcher's 83 and 87 election wins by splitting the left vote. I'm confused. You never tire of spouting how all Brexiters are thick racists Yet Tony Benn is the original Brexiter

I didn’t agree with them, but his reasons were a lot sounder than the ‘boo foreigner, vote for us and there’ll be fairies and unicorns’ that the Very Real Concerns crowd went for’. I presume that as a fan of Banter Boris, you weren’t keen on the bigotry, corruption, incompetence or criminal behaviour?

My fave Dennis Skinner comment was something like. "Half of that lot are crooks" "Please withdraw that comment" "Ok. Half of that lot are not crooks"

if they're labour it's a principled position - if they're not then they're thick racists. you need to learn these simple rules.

Your favourite politicians on 20:18 - Jul 5 with 3836 views | Churchman | Barbara Castle. A ground breaking politician for her time. But for that odious fool Callaghan’s vaulting ambition, In Place Of Strife industrial relations legislation would have gone through in the late 60s and the turmoil of the 70s/80s might possibly have been avoided. Alastair Darling. Came in when Brown became PM and was far more able than his predecessors and successors Clement Attlee - oversaw the creation of the Welfare State. Before the war he saw the threat of the Nazis long before his appeasing colleagues and changed his mind. Flexible, far sighted, intelligent. One for the now finished Tories - Michael Heseltine. I used to see him tottering around in the Treasury in the early years of the tories in the 2010s. Sour and miserable old duffer he was too. But my dad spent months working with him in the late 60s on the Third London Airport enquiry - the Roskill Commission and he reckoned he was a really nice bloke, fearsomely clever and completely ‘on it’ at all times. I respect his view on that. Honerable mentions to Hilary Benn, Yvette Cooper and Nicky Morgan. They ran the Select Committees on work I was involved in and they were truly excellent.

Ha! Skinner would be one of my favourites for sure, proper character. I quite like Rory Stewart too, even if he is a tory.

Actually yes, Rory Stewart is a great shout. Love his ‘The rest is politics’ podcast with Alistair Campbell who was a spin Dr I couldn’t stand, but ac5ually like the 2 of them together.

I was a Hezza fan boy, always liked David Owen too. Until drink got the better of him, I was quite fond of Charles Kennedy as well.
