Philogene Latest 12:34 - Jul 12 with 11667 views | portmanking | Starting to get a bit horny again... The Athletic's Villa correspondent, Tanswell, now thinks it's "unlikely" that Philogene will return to Villa Park. Game time is being prioritised for his development with ITFC still in pole position.

Philogene Latest on 14:07 - Jul 12 by _clive_baker_ | There's always that risk regardless of who we're signing. But when you're buying players who are young, British, so highly thought of and have multiple other premier league clubs sniffing around them it certainly de-risks the ability to move these players on should we need to. I can't see a world where their future PL careers are all written off even if we completely flop next season (which we and they wont). We might not recoup every penny on all of them, but it probably only takes one of Hutchinson / Philogene / Greaves etc to have a promising season for their value to double. An average season and it probably holds. Davis is also a good season away from being worth £30m, and a bad one away from still being worth a lot more than we paid. I think its the best strategy that gives us the best chance of survival, but also the best opportunity to manage the finances with their likely resale value if we were to go down. |
I'm less convinced than many on how easy it is to 'flip' these valuations tbh, generally speaking. No comment on the individuals themselves or their potential, just where I see the market today and what your average PL player is worth. If they look out of their depth then I'd expect their values to fall significantly. Top Championship players are only worth the sums we're allegedly paying because their ceilings are unknown, rather than because that's the price of a top Championship player (in my view). One or two may wish to take an immediate chance on them again but would surely seek a good discount. If they just about hold their own, they should retain their value, providing Philogene isn't costing us £27M. If they play well, to mid-table standard, I'd expect their values to increase to £30M+. £40M+ isn't the going rate for a 'bog-standard' mid-table PL player. It's what a mid-table club pays for their marquee signing, or what a bigger club pays for a player they believe in time will improve their team. Olise, 22, was scintillating for Palace last season and has recently sold for £50M. He was one of the best players outside the 'top 6'.

If you look at them as a group - circa £70-75m spent on Delap, Greaves, Philogene, Hutchinson, Johnson. All of them 24 or under, with bags of room for improvement under the best player developer (IMO) in the country. Basically you need one of them to really 'bang' or two of them to do a middling PL job and you've covered the cost of all of that business. [Post edited 12 Jul 2024 15:09]

I don't disagree but you really do need one of them to 'bang', or two of them to be mid-PL performers, or all four to look okay, or for us to survive in this league aha and then no matter if we didn't receive value everywhere. Some of the stuff I've read and heard makes me think there's a common view that uninspiring, head-above-water PL players are all worth £30M+ if they're young. Footy's mad but I don't think we're there yet.

Philogene Latest on 13:12 - Jul 12 by portmanking | Respectfully disagree. Both Tanswell and Bardell said he's easily a PL starter, but perhaps not quite at Villa's level right now (top 4/6). Do you really get much change from £25m+ for a mid-table PL star? This is the pond we're now fishing in. |
Aston villa get quite a bit of change !

Philogene Latest on 13:18 - Jul 12 by muccletonjoe | Well look back at some of Hull City games last season and tell me how he is even worth half of that.. we paid 18m for Hutchinson, who is in a totally different league on last seasons performances |
Apparently he isn't worth half of 27m after all

His value has been placed at £18M, same as Omari's up-front cost, which looks fair to me. Silly to pretend it was £13M.

Philogene Latest on 13:40 - Jul 12 by portmanking | Of course you can outbid. Villa have an 'option' to match the offers, not an 'obligation'. |
Why would they outbid some one ? It’s like bidding against your self, if they did that. they wouldn’t need to - they just to match the highest bid- that’s it Rest is upto Philogene - villa were a top club so think he would jump at the chance to go back - not sure who he would be competing with for playing time ? Maybe Bailey ? Can’t recall who was on the other wing but he wouldn’t have loads of competition

Had Ipswich gone from £18m to, say, £23m, there's a chance Villa may not have been prepared to match that.

Suspect MA & co. were sick of being messed around. Hanging on to keep chasing him may have meant losing out on alternative targets. Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush etc.

Going to Villa now apparently, so doesn't matter anymore. Do we think Villa will loan him to us?

Reckon Ashton will be glad not to deal with the agent ever again. Also. Why on earth go to Turkey for 2 days training...

“Ipswich still the favourites” for Philogene by Ryorry 12 Jul 2024 5:53I suggested on another thread yesterday, maybe just to get away from the pressure/spotlight. Not just his decision any more, complex negotiations between Villa/us/Hull incorporating Greaves fee as well as his own. And he needs to train somewhere without giving unwanted/misleading ‘clues’.

Good point there. Altho it's all bizarre His terms with villa were all pre agreed anyway. Then gave the eyes emoji on Instagram so it's all been a bit weird.

I reckon we withdrew our joint bid and went back with a bid for Greaves only. Hence why JP headed out to Turkey.

What were the guesses then? That we made offers for Greaves and Philogene which were correct? Greaves had had a medical, which was correct? That journo didn’t present it as fact this afternoon, it was what he thought was going to happen which is different. [Post edited 13 Jul 2024 9:55]

Against the rules. Premier clubs can not buy and loan on to another premier club within the same transfer window
