He was amazing both games against us, it’s not just his goals but he was a constant thorn and concern for our midfield and defence the whole 90 minutes. Add the goals and technical ability he has it seems like a no brainier. | | | |

100%. The guy was class last season. Played off the left and would be him/Broadhead for that position. Can also play central. Seems to be some question marks on if he’s a target or not. I thought as per previous posts he didn’t fit our recruitment criteria but nonetheless at 8m would be a great addition. Interesting we have said it’s a target but other outlets saying not. I thought the club may go for someone like Asprilia or Clarke perhaps next. [Post edited 14 Jul 2024 12:08]

Is there a middle path here? Szmodics' side expressed interest, we were diligent in engaging in talks, for a player who we know would improve our current squad, but have shelved any pursuit once we'd established the numbers, as he doesn't fit our ideal profile. We know the figure if we fail in other targets. Confirmation bias makes me inclined to keep the EADT's conclusions in play; I posted minutes before Phil's article that he wouldn't fit the bill!
Local lad, runs his socks off and elevates our attacking rotation, no doubt, so I couldn't be unhappy with his signing and would be happy for him personally. I was surprised by the story because £6M or £8M remains a notable chunk of our transfer kitty, even if dwarfed by other transfers we've already made. It isn't chump change even if it reflects good value on last season's top scorer. Then you weigh up our recruitment profiles.
Morsy and Luongo have been mentioned in support of the Szmodics signing, but they were Championship players dropping below their normal level. The equivalent for our next campaign would be a battle-hardened PL player who's lost the affection of their current club, and who the rest of the league have maybe underrated or hold justifiable reservations over.
Szmodics is someone I'd be chuffed to have if already with us, or if the stars of his contract situation had aligned in our favour (like O'Hare this summer, for interested parties), but I don't believe he improves our XI by the amount required to make him £6M well spent for the season ahead. I don't think we have the funds to be spending those sums on players who, by the end of the window, you'd hope were roughly ranked 15th in a 25-man squad. Better we spend more on signing 1st-5th IMO. | | | |
