Townsend from West Brom... 12:36 - Jul 31 with 4407 viewsDublinBlue84

Any thoughts? Don't know much about him to be honest.

Ignore my earlier post, I took data from Wikipedia which was wrong.

Solid enough player, bit of PL experience and played week in week out for WBA for a few seasons so very resilient. Better going forwards than defending.

Going to struggle to find much better for someone who is only going to play when Leif isn't fit - not one to get juices flowing but what we need for there

...so in that respect it's OK, if a little unispiring.

But he'll only be a back up hopefully.

We really do need to start pulling our finger out though, we need some real quality added and we need it pretty quickly.

CM is a massive priority, as is LW/L10.

We could also do with another goalscorer.

And probably another keeper.

We made a decent start in the window, but things have definitely slowed down.

Cheap back up option to Leif, similar to Marvin Johnson last year.

Must be very hard to attract a player to come here to sit on the bench. Hardly comes recommended by Baggies fans if you put his name into twitter but on the other hand he is experienced and has played a season in the Prem before.

Exactly this. We are not going to spend our budget on a position we feel we have Premier league quality in. (Leif) would imagine he’s a model pro and is happy to come here and fight for his place but knowing unlikely to be first choice. Comes with experience as you say.

I think the fact we haven't filled some of the key positions e.g CM might be that we're trying to bring in higher quality additions and those might not happen until other Prem teams have done their own preseason camps/made their own additions.

Not expecting an emergency pod for this one then! hehe

31, a good end of career contract, at least a year in the prem with us probably makes sense for him

Looking at his appearances last season according to wiki he only played 9 games, not surr if he had injury issues as he was a regular before that

From the other thread.... inspiring stuff. Now watch McKenna turn a turd into gold with coaching!

'Choosing between Conor Townsend or Adam Reach to play left back/wing back is akin to having to choose between Ian Huntley or Myra Hindley to babysit. Both absolutely pony!'

'Get Conor Townsend out of my club as soon as possible. P*** f***** poor. Matt Phillips been absolute dire as well'

'Conor Townsend is so poor, have to move him on this summer.'

'I'm sick and tired of Conor Townsend ruining our attacks'

'Any other lb > Conor Townsend'

'Never disliked an Albion player as much as Conor Townsend'

'You can always rely on Conor Townsend to cost this team a goal, playing everyone onside. Absolutely awful footballer, every week without fail he stinks the place out'

....it's not ideal for us.

We're away on our second training camp and we're still 4 or 5 short, a few of which who would potentially be starters.

I see that Soton have got 12 in so far, and whilst quantity is no guarantee of quality, at least they've got their business done efficiently and they know what they are working with in good time.

It's not time to panic yet, but we are getting there...

Don't trust wiki, 42 appearances in the league last year with 33 starts

Only 5-6 of Soton's signings are likely to be capable of being first XI starters though. The rest are ones for the future or squad filler.

Minimal fee you'd imagine, lots of Championship football.

I guess a lesser version of Davis from what I remember of him.

Ticks all the boxes for the understudy role, seems a good sensible signing for me.

Just had a look at Southampton's business so far and I quite like the look of it

Didn't realise they signed Ronnie Edwards as well

Yeah Southampton’s business has been very good so far and are after Matt o’reilly too from Celtic which would be their marquee signing.

Brereton diaz was a no brainer. Really surprised we didn’t push for that.

Probably not going to get a better backup left back that's also happy to be second choice. Very much a solid squad addition. Davis is going to play most games unless injured, but we might actually be able to bring him off for a rest now instead of flogging him to exhaustion.

A player such as Downes is very much what we need. Still a big gap in CM we need to fill.

I wonder how far down the target list he was, considering this reaction to him! Still, have to trust McKenna. Feeling more and more flat as each day goes by though.

ETA - Not because of the Townsend transfer. At £500k why not if he can cover for Davis? I'll be happier if and when we get some CMs in.

Seems to be a few clips of him scoring free kicks so I assume he is a set piece taker, which is always useful
