Just having a browse of the West Brom forums to see their parting thoughts on Townsend. Many saying he's not up to Championship standard and they're delighted to get shot of him for a fee.

Obviously he's been signed very much as back-up and will hopefully be a useful squad player for cup games and to close out games once Leif gets tired.
However if their views are anything to go by, let's hope Leif doesn't get injured this season as we don't want to be relying on Townsend too much as a starter! |  |

Fullback is the most criticised position by "fans", as relatively few understand what their actual job is and/or that when they get caught out of position it is often not their fault. |  |

Two reasons I see this as a sensible signing. Firstly and most obviously cover for Davis. Secondly should the worst happens and we were relegated it gives the manager time should Davis prove as effective in the Prem and is then sold for McKenna or whoever is in charge then, to get a replacement for Davis and ultimately for Townsend. | | | |

You need to think about our recruitment in the round.
It's a shrewd and sensible signing.
Backup for Leif - less than £1m for a player that played pretty much all of last season in a solid defence at Championship level. We bought solid cover at left back but if the worst happens, a player that is more than decent at Championship level.
It leaves funds and wages left to spend elsewhere....not a lot to be unhappy with here. We are going to need a few of these types of players.
Again, a player that increases the quality of the overall squad. |  |

West Brom fan comes on here to read what we think about him. We've been saying all last season he's not good enough for the championship and would probably say it again in his leaving messages - and would be surprised West Brom have signed him.

Then why would their entire forum base, the majority of whom probably watched him every week, be criticising him and saying exactly the opposite and that he's rubbish? I've barely seen a single post on there (granted I haven't been through all 28 pages but i've read the last 4 or 5 pages) that are sad he's leaving or saying we've got a great player. I'd imagine its very hard to get someone who is "happy" to be a backup to probably the most vital player in the team, but also is a decent player.
I don't know much about him, but West Brom's defence was pretty good last season and if he played most of the games, then he's a part of that.

Us and West Brom play different styles of football. West Brom are more defence-minded whereas we are more direct-attacking. Who is to say that our style of play won’t suit him better, regardless of what their fans’ opinions of him are? If Leif played for West Brom I suspect he wouldn’t have got as many assists as he has done with us and his fans probably wouldn’t rate him as highly as what we do. Kieran obviously thinks Townsend has the attributes to fit in with our system and do a job when Leif is not in the team. | | | |
