BBC writer predicts PL placings and we are... 09:49 - Aug 14 with 6335 viewsBlue_badge

Phil McNulty writes on the BBC web page and places us 20th!
He does admit that transfers could change things and that he gets it wrong - predicted Leicester to be relegated when they went on to win the league.

The previous season all three stayed up. In seven out of the last ten seasons, one of the promoted sides has finished mid table or better.

In fairness, two of those were teams who had previously been relegated from the premier league and came back up. The third, Nottingham Forest, signed about 20 players.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

I remember Joe Royle was no fan of his at all! Think he covered Everton when Joe was boss there.

Its a trend based on last season. Stop looking to split hairs.

You can't say it's a trend from a single data point.

Ladapo will be 4th choice when hirst and al-hamadi are back fit in a few weeks. Harness will be back on the bench when broadhead is fit.

You're not including the players that are already injured. But you should because they are part of our squad.

They are but they're missing. And Al-Hamidi or Ladapo being third choice striker is an issue. Who is behind Broadhead on the left or as a left ten? Harness?

The squad isn't good enough. Even McKenna thinks that so I'm not sure why a big thing is being made about that being said on here.

So let's agree. The squad is not strong enough at present and it will take a monumental effort to keep us up as it stands. You seem very confident that we will bring in suitable reinforcements in the next 2 and a half weeks, and that's great. I'm less confident. Ultimately, if Ashton doesn't achieve this, he has let McKenna down, and he would every sympathy with me to move on in the next 12 months. The ball is very much now in Ashton's court.

I'm hopeful. Not sure about confident. I remember the mess of the summer 2022 window when we held on too long for Hirst, ended up scrabbling, and brought in a crocked Camara and Ahadme on September 1st. Ashton has history of being caught out.

We'll be OK. We need 2 or 3 more bodies in to help, but our first 11 will more than hold their own. Defence is looking much stronger, which was our achilles heel last season. Midfield is strong, maybe 1 more to challenge Luongo (although he's so good at the role he's used for, I'm not overly concerned). Upfront we know we have goals in us. Think Delap will thrive in our system, Hirst shouldn't miss much all being well. Then we have the team spirit which shouldn't be underestimated. And McK orchestrating everything. We should be relishing the challenge.

Let's be honest, we will be most pundits tip for relegation, arguably with good reason. This season will be a real test of McKenna's ability to get more than the sum of parts from the team.

That should be no surprise to anyone though, really, as we massively overachieved with last season's second straight promotion.

I'm cautiously predicting that we'll just about keep our head above water, but it's going to be really tough, and this season won't be one where we win lots of games.

I know things have changed a fair bit since then, but when we went up in 2000, we had a team of players with the likes of Jermaine Wright making 46 appearances, Wilnis (37), Clapham (44), McGreal (34), Scowcroft (43) - would any of them have been seen as standout players in the top division, compared with some of the global stars that were in the premier league at the time? I doubt it, but what they achieved by carrying on the momentum that had been building over the previous couple of seasons of knocking on the door via the playoffs before finally making it up was a team effort, with Burley getting the best out of what would probably be seen as very ordinary players.

He’s a terrible football journo tbf - very limited knowledge, and utterly obsessed with Man Utd (even though they aren’t that relevant these days).

There’s always an assumption that anyone operating under the BBC brand must be top of their game, that’s patently not the case (they even employ Chris Sutton ffs!).

OMG. That reminds me we are going to have Chris nuttun predictions to contend with every week now.

I think the problem is partly that we are a very unknown quantity. There is nothing upon which to base an assessment of how ITFC will do in the Prmier League.

So they fall back on received wisdom about the necessity of having Prem-experienced players in our squad and a short-term memory of all promoted sides having gone down last season (whereas they all stayed up the one before).

Also worth remembering that most Prem pundits (particularly on YouTube) only have the most casual knowlege of what goes on outside that division. You can tell this by the very superficial analysis of our squad and playing style (everyone's heard of Leif Davis, knows we score lots of goals, beyond that, not much), let alone signings or the stylistic changes we've seen in preseason.

Even those who acknowlege our strengths soon default to the position that unless you hire an entirely new squad, you're going to go down. I've seen people praise us highly, then just say "it won't be enough" and stick us in the bottom three anyway.

It's really embarrassing that the head of football does not have an in depth understanding of every team in the league. I'm only a fan so I haven't been paying attention to other teams recently when I get busy with other things.
I can see Martin really struggling in the Premier League if he is as stubborn as Kompany was last season. KM will stick to his principles, but he'll also adapt.
Leicester will need to find a way of putting sides to bed when they struggled to do that last season. Their players haven't really been tested yet because they basically had Premier League quality players who got by on ability.
I'm happy that we are being counted out. I think anything from top half to relegation is possible, but I'm expecting that coaching and stability will get us over the line. If we are in a decent position at Christmas, we could bring in some next level players.

Never really take much notice of these. Quite a few had us pegged to be relegated last season and look what happened. We thrive off the underdog status, so hopefully this propels the lads again to defy any odds.

17th or higher is a magnificent season for us.

I really don’t mind these pundits predicting we’re going to finish 20th, it’s just their opinion, it doesn’t mean it is correct. However, there’s no getting away from it, it is going to be bloody tough.

Understandable. And I can't say with any certainty that we will stay up. But thankfully football isn't as straightforward as pundits believe, so who knows?
