Where does this leave Morsy? 09:12 - Aug 15 with 8345 viewsAsa

A three of Phillips, Cajuste and Morsy could be rotated nicely based on opposition but, as much as I'd build a statue of Morsy right now, if Phillips gets back to his best and Cajuste plays to his ability then it's almost impossible to see how Morsy could stay in the midfield two.

In itself that shows an incredibly ruthless approach from McKenna and Ashton who won't have taken lightly a scenario where it's entirely possible the inspirational leader will struggle to make the starting line up if we get what we expect to get from these two signings.

That presumably leaves Taylor as a bench option and quite possible Luongo even becomes at threat of moving on in January, which I think (again as much as I adore the bloke) was always going to be beyond him in terms of an ambitious lower half Premier League side.

Fair play to the ownership. None of us want this side gutted but have to be realistic that some of our heroes were never going to cut it when it came to establishing ourselves at the top table. But many a side would have come up, and added a sprinkle of quality to accompany what they have and perhaps be too sentimental where captains and leaders are concerned.

I personally think Morsy with the right partner could thrive at this level but in the higher intensity games last year against Leciester and Leeds, Morsy couldn't get near them for te first 45-60 minutes in some of those games.

It's a bold move to bring in two players that are better (on paper by some distance) rather than just one and a couple of players to compete as back ups.

Of course Phillips will need to be eased in. Quite possible Morsy is outstanding with one alongside him and stays in the team. But you can see the progression already towards a short term and long term replacement.

Shows the level of ambition if even Morsy now has to be talked about, entirely realistically, as having work to do to stay in the team as the season unfolds.

there's a difference between being fit and match fit to go week after week.

Cajuste to play AML

(Broadhead/Harness position)

Why would some one with no goals and 2 assists in over half a season play as an attacking left midfield ? I don’t know much about him but certainly doesn’t sound like an attacking player to me .

Where does this leave Morsy?

The absolute bedrock of this team. The end.

Definitely not an “end of” discussion.

Morsy has never played Premier League. There’s reasons for that.

I see Morsy being critical in the first few months as we live off emotion and excitement, great fitness and team spirit.

However as the season evolves we will then know who of our brilliant players from the last 2 years can truly step up. Morsy might not be one of them.

This is how I see things.

Not that Morsy won't step up. I think he will be fine. He's a class player deserving of his chance here and with the right partner I think he will look a Premier League player.

As the months go by though there's a reasonable case for Phillips and Cajuste, if we get him, looking like top half Premier League midfielders and playing at a standard that Morsy just isn't capable of.

I don't have any concerns over any of them being good enough. But we have to be realistic, as much as we love Sam, and say that a Man City player and Napoli player, both of whom are experienced internationals for England and Sweden, and at 28 and 25, would likely be able to reach a level that Morsy, at 33, won't do.

May not play out that way at all. Cajuste may not come, Phillips may not deliver. But it's conversation worthy at this stage.

Different game these days especially with five subs. You might not start, but there's a good chance you'll finish.

And especially with the PL opposition having much stronger benches than us. Last season, our strong bench worked in our favour, but this season, the boot will be on the other foot. Morsy will almost certainly start, but he'll have to get used to being replaced after 60-70 minutes, especially as we're going to be doing far more ball chasing. He'll also pick up even more yellows as PL midfield players will be that little bit quicker.

Yeah, I know I've gone out on a limb with that one, but, I just saw 'something' in amongst those sliding tackles etc, that caught my eye.

I won't mention who those fleeting moments reminded me of due to ridicule, but I just thought...."I think he could play the left AML"

He's also come on the left side of midfield in/around the 60th min a number of times for Napoli.

Obviously not as far forward as they played 4-3-3, but with a 2 in front?

I'm not saying that is his position, but it could be!

Tangenitally related to Opie but I have no clue why people think Taylor, a player who couldn’t break into our league one team, is a bench option in the premier league.

That would have been hard for him to do considering we didn't sign him until we were in the Championship.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Morsy will be 33 next month, and has never played in the Premier League.

I love Morsy, and hope that he makes the step up, but it is prudent to be well covered with suitable experience at this level.

His disciplinary record alone necessitates the need for strong competition / cover.

As others have pointed out VAR alone could take care of his appearance record this season if he doesn’t modify his game to suit.

Even without VAR, last season it was often a case of when not if he would be booked.

He’s also no spring chicken and the demands of the Premier League will likely see him rested on occasion.

A great player undoubtedly, but I cannot see this regime showing any sentimentality.

As our No. 5 and Captain. Anything else just isn't up for discussion. When fit and not suspended, Morsy starts. End of.

It means Town can rotate without the balance of the side being compromised. Besides I doubt within three seasons either Morsy or Loungo will be with Town. I think the plan will be for three in midfield, with two protecting the back four and one when able to support the attack. A 4-3-3 set up.

I don't get the 'end of' comments.

How can it be 'end of'? And it shouldn't be.

We're signing two international midfielders - that is proper competition for places!
