Where does this leave Morsy? 09:12 - Aug 15 with 8121 views | Asa | A three of Phillips, Cajuste and Morsy could be rotated nicely based on opposition but, as much as I'd build a statue of Morsy right now, if Phillips gets back to his best and Cajuste plays to his ability then it's almost impossible to see how Morsy could stay in the midfield two. In itself that shows an incredibly ruthless approach from McKenna and Ashton who won't have taken lightly a scenario where it's entirely possible the inspirational leader will struggle to make the starting line up if we get what we expect to get from these two signings. That presumably leaves Taylor as a bench option and quite possible Luongo even becomes at threat of moving on in January, which I think (again as much as I adore the bloke) was always going to be beyond him in terms of an ambitious lower half Premier League side. Fair play to the ownership. None of us want this side gutted but have to be realistic that some of our heroes were never going to cut it when it came to establishing ourselves at the top table. But many a side would have come up, and added a sprinkle of quality to accompany what they have and perhaps be too sentimental where captains and leaders are concerned. I personally think Morsy with the right partner could thrive at this level but in the higher intensity games last year against Leciester and Leeds, Morsy couldn't get near them for te first 45-60 minutes in some of those games. It's a bold move to bring in two players that are better (on paper by some distance) rather than just one and a couple of players to compete as back ups. Of course Phillips will need to be eased in. Quite possible Morsy is outstanding with one alongside him and stays in the team. But you can see the progression already towards a short term and long term replacement. Shows the level of ambition if even Morsy now has to be talked about, entirely realistically, as having work to do to stay in the team as the season unfolds. [Post edited 15 Aug 2024 9:13]

Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:16 - Aug 15 by NedPlimpton | I completely agree that Morsy should be first name on the team sheet, but you can't imagine that one of Cajuste or Phillips would be too happy about being left out |
If you've got 3 for 2 positions there's a good chance with injuries, suspensions (Morsy), rotation, form, subs etc that they'll all play plenty of football over the course of the season + cups.
Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:29 - Aug 15 with 1422 views | GavTWTD | We might not sign both. We've been saying all summer that you can't focus on one player as we may be gazumped at any time. Everton seem interested in both players too so it's not a given. Phillips would need to prove his fitness and work ethic to KM but these seem exciting. Hard to imagine a few years ago that he'd ever be a serious consideration.

Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:24 - Aug 15 by iamipswich | Town reconsidering position on Cajuste given Phillips moving forward. I still think get him but whether we can afford both and further additions will dictate. |
Do you actually know that to be the case or have you just made it up? Edit - Apols, can now see you haven't made it up. [Post edited 15 Aug 2024 9:57]

We definitely need both. We need legs and dynamism - and top flight experience - in our engine room. Phillips is a Champions League & title winner, Cajuste was signed by the Serie A champions. Both would be a real statement to the likes of Leicester and Southampton.
Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:35 - Aug 15 with 1370 views | John_Warks_Willy | Natural evolution of a team rapidly ascending. He’ll get loads of games, will remain captain but maybe a touch more rotation than he’s experienced previously. Don’t forget how effective he’s proved further up the pitch too when given the freedom, and KP possibly helps there. His X factor though, and what will keep us in the Prem if all show it, is his sheer determination and work rate. That will be critical for his own influence but also driving standards. God I wish he was 10 years younger. It’s a squad game which I’m sure he buys into. He deservedly now gets a loads of appearances and recognition at the top level, and will forever remain one of the kings of Portman Road whatever happens. I’m pretty sure he’s satisfied with life right now, as he ruddy well should be.

Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:35 - Aug 15 with 1349 views | Vegtablue | Perhaps on my own here but signing below the level we can attract in order to better protect favourites seems a recipe for disaster. We're two CMs light presently and I'm glad we're bringing in the best we can. Whether Morsy's starting berth is now in jeopardy, time will tell, but I wouldn't bet against him so quickly today. Also I see no prospect of Luongo moving on unless we sign these two and then add further. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Luongo against the big teams and 2nd half of the season looked like he struggled with the athleticism. Agree both needed. I love Luongo been one of our better signings in the last 10 years but prem might be a step too far.
Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:39 - Aug 15 with 1312 views | Clutch | We need a lot of players - last year we were so reliant on Morsy it was hard to see us getting anything out of games if he wasn't available.

Yep. He's still play plenty of football whoever we sign, until there's reasons to suggest he shouldn't. That said, our reliance on Morsy over the past couple of years has been quite unhealthy, frankly. Its worked out of course, but its not a great position to be in when the standard drops so much in the absence of 1 player. Inevitably we'll have players we'll miss, all sides do, but rarely to that extent. Thankfully he's stayed fit and aside for suspensions has been available. It would be suicidal to see the window close with today's options though. Its not a case of replacing him, its a case of supporting him and being less dependent on 1 player in such a crucial area.
Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:42 - Aug 15 with 1270 views | ITFCson | Who knows, Phillips could end up playing as a CB. Pep played him there in a few friendlies and he impressed by all accounts. Obviously he’s not being signed as a defender but with it in mind he could do a job there if required.
Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:45 - Aug 15 with 1250 views | Garv | I think Morsy plays most minutes in most games. He's the absolute heart beat. Just because you've played for Man City and Napoli that won't change, in my opinion.

Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:21 - Aug 15 by davblue | i think Phillips might take 2 or 3 months to get up to speed. He's not played many games in the last 2 - 3 years, his body won't be up to the rigours of prem football for a while you would suspect. Reckon the Swede will start before him and we might see the best of Philllips post Xmas. [Post edited 15 Aug 2024 9:26]

Taylor didn’t break in because of how good Luongo was.

Could he even improve again? He has got better every year so far. I don't agree he has work to do to stay in the team, he has been our most important player of the last 3 years.

Where does this leave Morsy? on 09:18 - Aug 15 by Asa | It's not. Nor should it be. But in two or three months if two proven top flight players are playing superbly then it leaves us with a dilemma unless Morsy is playing at a level even we didn't know he was capable of. He's an absolute legend and I love the guy. But it's hugely ambitious to even be giving ourselves this potential dilemma if the two loan signings pan out how Kieran hopes they will. |
Thing is, he's been playing with Massimo (superb player but not got PL level mobility) or Taylor (great athlete, not yet got PL ball retention). Morsy has to take up the slack a little with either of those. Lob a true PL level player in there (athlete and top level baller combined) and you free up Morsy a little to do his link ups and carry the ball and boss the team around. He will step up another level, I'm quite sure of that.

Where does this leave Morsy? on 10:09 - Aug 15 with 1042 views | crouchendyachtclub | The responses on this thread are really something. Morsy has been great for us but lets not forget that at 32, roughly half his games have been league 1 and below. McKenna has been instrumental in bringing him to the level where he is looking at starting in the premier league and given players with a higher starting base, it will say a lot about how far he's come if they don't take his place over a season.
