We still want O’Shea from Burnley 12:09 - Aug 19 with 12086 views | SitfcB | According to Nixon. Ipswich want to sign Burley's tough centre half Dara O'Shea in a £10 million deal. The Tractor Boys are focusing on a move for O'Shea after signing keeper Aro Muric and missing out to Tottenham on Wilson Odobert. The Premier League new boys now want an answer on O'Shea with Brentford also keen on the Republic of Ireland defender. O'Shea may wait to see if any other clubs comes in before committing but that would risk Ipswich going elsewhere. Burnley also need a resolution as they could have to find a replacement. Free agent John Egan is currently training with him after leaving Sheffield United. [Post edited 19 Aug 2024 12:11]

We still want O’Shea from Burnley on 12:38 - Aug 19 by homer_123 | I can't remember which Town player or ex player said it. It was something along the lines of: "In League one Luke looked like a league one player, in the Championship, he looked like a Championship player. In the Prem, he will become a prem player." In effect, Woolfie plays to the level we are at. I think he'll get better and better. |
It was Chambers, but i'm not sure he's got the credentials to know what is required to become a Prem CB. It will be his pace that might cost him, hopefully not!

Have to say, I don't think it's bobbins at all. I think you'll find he'll surprise many (in a good way) and improve immensely. He's still only 25 and has something nearing 200 appearances now - he's not in his prime yet. From what I know of him - he just wants to learn and improve.

More the fact he didn't stand out in league 1. He was pretty much faultless all season.

His pace wasn't an issue Saturday. The times he was caught was from a 3rd man run (not his player), said players not being picked up by our midfield or full backs. By the time the player arrived with Wolfie, they were at full pelt - no way was he (or anyone) going to catch them. Davis, of all our players Saturday, struggled with being caught out for pace. Salah's runs and moreover the timing and movement of those runs caused Davis immense issues. I'm not saying Wolfie will be a world beater - but I do think he'll improve a huge amount playing the Prem - more than many realise. Will it ultimately be enough, I don't know. Clearly KM rates him. Of the two I see Edmundson leaving before Wolfie.

It won't be his pace - or not directly. Not many centre backs are like Usain Bolt. It's about knowledge of positioning to negate players running at him whilst he's making a standing start. The best defenders are those who manage this effectively, and it's what we'll need to see from our backline this season. IMO, on Saturday, the centre backs in particularly were very good at this.

We still want O’Shea from Burnley on 12:39 - Aug 19 by pointofblue | Makes me feel like ElephantInTheRoom has a point, as much as it pains me to say it. We're becoming another Forest. ETA - Thinking about it, I'd say our mentality as a fanbase is trying to turn the club into another Forest at this stage, rather than the club's approach itself. If that makes sense. The two errors I picked up were the booking when he got far too tight to Jota and a Liverpool break in the second half when he went towards the ball leaving two free outside. Granted there was no rb in position but in that situation he should have maybe positioned himself halfway between the ball and the attackers outside. Not fair to judge any of the players on one game though. There was a clear step up not just in technical quality but in sheer athleticism and you could see there were a few nerves there as the execution on the ball wasn't always as clean as usual. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It's ok, I'm concerned about myself as well. In truth it would be nice to go back to a time before the Ferguson-led dominance of Manchester United coupled with money having a greater and greater impact but... not going to happen.

Fergie’s great teams were built on their youth players and great coaching. Nothing to do with the financial doping we see nowadays. Sky TV ruined football.

Not sure that is entirely accurate. I think fairer to say he was happy to bring youth through but was equally happy to buy quality when needed.

The early booking was indeed an error, though slightly harsh? That said, credit to Wolfie for managing that for the rest of the game. Yes, you are right on the second point - but as I say, he's still learning.

I think the Ferguson led dominance led other teams deciding the only way they could compete was spending more, plus obviously the attraction of Sky money as already mentioned.

Dunno about that, I think PL CBs now have to be fairly quick such is the pace the game is played at. You have to be exceptional positionally to get away with a lack of pace. Not that I think Woolfy has a problem with that, I think he is deceptively fast. It's why I think Burgess could struggle at this level though. Interestingly, O'Shea was recorded as the 5th fastest player in the PL last season.

I know van de Ven at Spurs is fast as well, but wouldn't say it's the be all and end all. Depends on style of play as well, I guess. If we want to be open and expansive then pace at the back is meow preferable than if we sit deep/press less, which isn't McKenna's way.

Wolfie doesn’t have enough pace. He was caught out within 5 minutes of playing the level and got a yellow. He recovered, had a decent game but you can’t coach lack of pace. We have to strengthen this position in this window if we want to stay up.

We still want O’Shea from Burnley on 13:07 - Aug 19 by portmanking | We were *always* going to sign at least a dozen new faces. It's just the natural evolution of the squad. We let 6 go in the summer, so replace these with better and upgrade 6 of the existing squad. It's hardly throwing the baby out with the bath water. |
Also, players like Hutchinson and Greaves in particular will have huge resale value. We're hardly playing fast and loose with our funds.

In that case we also need another left back in, as Davis was left for pace - and out of position - for both of Liverpool's goals.

Players being written off after one game against one of the world’s best teams is kinda wild.
