Save me a scroll back - VAR/Offside/Pen 2nd half 15:31 - Aug 19 with 2447 viewsartsbossbeard

Davis's run off the ball & subsequent cross was right below my vantage point and it looked tight, so guess it was mm's off?

Was Delap fouled when the ball came in? As it looked a little theatrical from this correspondent.

TIA

Think the pen would’ve been awarded had it not been for the offside tbh.

Thank you - it was tight then!

Thought Delap looked a bit sheepish as he got up and didn't make too much fuss..

I was convinced VVD wiped him out. Maybe a few too many beers pre match.

It was a perfect day for too many pre match beers, in fairness..

Ref was giving it before the flag went up, whistle to mouth and arm ready to be pointed.

Additional questions, who would have taken the penalty?
Plenty of candidates, have we got a 100% nailed on penalty taker, and would it have been different first prem game against Liverpool, a more assured head? Did Delap take them ever? He wasn't on at the time but does Szmodics go up the pecking order?

If that's going to be given offside this season, and it clearly is, we might need to adapt our play a little so players are absolutely certain they're not offside in any given situation.

Delap went down theatrically twice trying to win a penalty. Hopefully he will cut that out, as his all round game was very good.

As someone above said, the Ref put his whistle to his mouth prior to the flag going up so he thought there was enough in it to be a pen.

Had we have gone one nil up if it was a penalty, would you still have said the same about him?

Davis, Morsy, Taylor (was he on then?)

Was thinking possibly Morsy in such a huge game.
Szmodics seems the type to take them if he becomes a regular but I've no idea if he took them elsewhere.

Welcome to the Prem - there are going to be plenty of players doing the same to us; feel the slightest contact and make the most of it. See also yellow cards handed out for fouls that are run of the mill in the Championship and League One...

Yep - he did it as well up against Robertson. Commentator (when I watched it back at home) called him out on it saying he had 'jumped unnaturally' as he checked back. I realise most Prem teams have several players like this (look at Man Utd on Friday night with Diallo, Garnacho and even Harry Maguire!) but I don't like to see it from an Ipswich player.

I know what you mean but I think its a matter of if you can't beat them, join them. See also time wasting etc.

We will have plenty of things go against us this year and I thought the ref had a case of the 'big club syndrome' particularly in the first half Saturday so we need to make the most of things when we can.

Delap or Chaplin. I'd have gone with Delap personally.

Szmodics if he'd been on the field.

As opposed to playing on, even if it looked yards offside, which was the case for the rest of the game

He actually pointed to the spot. I don't know whether a ref has to do that these days to indicate what he feels the decision should be pre-VAR check?

Yep.

He stopped the game. Wouldn't ha e stopped it for a tight offside. After he stopped it flag went up and he went back to the offside which was checked and shown to be right.
