Feeling a bit low this morning... Modern football is rubbish 10:17 - Aug 25 with 7793 views | jasondozzell | It was a great occasion yesterday to be in that away end and see many of the core of the League one team start against the behemoth that is modern day City. Fantastic to go one nil up. I thought the support was great too, once we got going. Everything about the City experience is slightly depressing. You can't even walk around the ground because of the fencing - they've spent so much on making everything efficient and controlled in that way that it doesn't really feel like a football ground. Thank god for Portman Road. The murals and flags they have all have the look of being 'official' and club agreed. It's like watching a very slick entertainment group so an impression of ultras. The ground (it's not really a ground is it) is impressive in an 'O2' type arena is impressive - that's to say large and slick but there's no beauty to it. As expected, they have unbelievably good players. But even that was a bit disappointing - the Pep tactical approach doesn't really allow the handbrake off. It is football by constant pressure of having better technical players, but there's not much expression. Was great when we scored. Their penalty and the first experience of VAR was depressing. What a farce it is. The ref running to the screen - What's the point? It's already decided when they are told to go over. Had we survived that 10 minutes after we scored who knows what would have happened. But the thing that most depressed me was how many of us are so keen to write off players who have been so good for us and who we all love. Mass, Woolfy etc. People were joking about Ladapo coming on if he'd been on the bench. I really hate it. It may well be the case that they are not as good as players we've brought in but the horrible modern football approach of 'not good enough, get rid ' and 'he's not good enough for this level' is so depressing in normal times, let alone when it's home-grown players and players who have given so much. We are meeting the reality of the Premier League and no doubt it requires ruthlessness but it's pretty depressing. For my money Mass and Woolfy have done really well in both games. What is football? That's a surprisingly hard question to answer. I'm glad we're back competing where we should be and there's so much to be proud of with our club. I wouldn't want to be successful though if City is what success looks like. Onto Wimbledon. [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 10:19]

This forum has a few that go over the top i.e the use of the word abysmal (but if you mention it, somebody will pop along saying it doesn't happen). Social media is awash with mentalists who come out with several hot takes per half let alone a season. I'm trying to enjoy the ride, it's going to be tough and there's likely to be more downs than ups. I've seen Fulham mentioned as must win.. ffs it's game 3 not 33. It will be a tough tough game, like the rest of them. I wish everyone could take a moment and just see how far we've come.

We were in the top section, 3 seats away from the city fans. There was one bloke by us who spent the whole game with his back to the game winding up the city fans. The whole game. The language was obscene, he'd find one "victim" go on for about 10 minutes and then move on to another. There were threats, c-bomb, the lowest was when he went on at a father, with his daughter that it was an in appropriate relationship. He was also coming out with some very racist language. I did something I never thought I'd have to do and text the phone number but nothing was done. There were 1000s of people who would have loved to watch the game and he behaved appallingly, I was embarrassed. As a mother and her son it didn't feel my place to stand up to him. Then came the "ipswich ultras" stickers he started sticking everywhere. I somehow got a picture of him and will be emailing the club. There is no harm with friendly banter but 90 minutes of racist, homophonic, foul language is a disgrace. My son even asked if we could leave at half time to get away from him. (We didnt) I spoke to a steward and then said they would keep an eye, nothing was done. Oh and the vaping for the whole game was lovely too. Feeling a bit low this morning... Modern football is rubbish on 10:49 - Aug 25 with 5547 views | Sawtrich | This is what the Premier League has become in our absence. So much wrong with it but we're all stuck with it. The fan reaction to the European Super League proposal showed what fans really think of what the game has developed into. Unfortunately the only alternative is to have no success, which we've had for twenty years and that wasn't much fun either.

Really interesting. You are right. We are meeting the reality of the Premier League in all its glory and depressing ugliness. We do live in a throw away society and that reflects in throwing players away. Patience? That’s for happy clappers. Is such a churn in players a necessity as we try to compete? Probably, but I don’t like it. Not sure injuries to key players has helped. Luongo was actually excellent for 60 mins against Liverpool. Possibly our best player. Woolfenden? Not seen yesterday’s game but I thought he did alright against the scousers. Harness did ok when he came on too. One of the things I liked about the side of the last two seasons is it had an identity. A real cohesive feel to it. I hope at least some of that is retained with all the new players coming in. Regarding the ground, I’m interested to hear your view of Man City’s not having seen it. I’ve been to Spurs ground to see NFL and thought it fantastic. But that was to watch a sport which by nature is quite anodyne/stop, start. Is it good, football wise? Well I’ve been to Wembley and the Arsenal’s bowl and neither have anything like the feel and identity of their predecessors. Portman Rd will have to be improved. I hope it is done in a way that keeps its character. It may not have the facilities, sight lines etc of a modern bowl, but it’s unique and special. Leicester, Saints, Derby, M’boro, Arsenal etc are not. [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 10:54]

Completely agree. I think it's exactly that - entitlement and impatience. A lot of that minority won't be here if the club finds itself in harder times again in the future. And you're right about rising above it and just doubling down on support. Only way forward. COYB!

Have exactly the same thoughts. One of the best things about the team over the last few years had been that it had been truly a team, greater than the sum of all its parts and with tremendous spirits. I trust McKenna to retain that and integrate new signings (who so far all look very in tune with how we work etc) but it is a bit sad that the leap up to this leve apparently lrequires so much player turnover. And I think you're spot on in terms of football grounds having a different need to stadiums for other sports. Football is a frenetic, chaotic game. A ground should hold and magnify that energy and transmit character rather than just focus on 'spectator experience' or whatever is the buzzword! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I genuinely think we’ll be ok this season, after what we’ve seen in glimpses over those two games, and totally agree, I’d rather be Ipswich town than city, .. just part of the premier league wheel, all they care about is how much they can make.

….at the front, literally next to the city fans. We had loads of back and forth with them, 99% of them took it all in good spirits and they gave us plenty back which was fine by me. At the end of the match two of them, that were dishing out and getting back the most “banter”, lent over shook our hands and wished us luck for the rest of the season. We all left with smiles on our faces. It was actually quite refreshing to be honest.

As a fan, it's possible to rise above it if you watch your own emotional responses to it. My other slight concern is that sometimes it may get back to players a bit, and even possibly affect the team. I'm sure it doesn't happen much, and I'm equally sure that if it does this brilliant club has ways of lifting the players above it.

This is terrible, and you've done the right thing reporting it to the club. People like this are not fans or supporters of the club or football, but someone intent on causing trouble. The game has been blighted by attitudes and behaviour like this at various times, and there is no room for these idiots in our club. It's very few individuals I think, and the club has a great reputation for a good set of supporters, so even more reason to remove the cancer where it does still exist within the fan base.

Genuinely think the issue here is the way the forum is set up. Effectively on a match day the forum is a bit crap, instead of one match thread where all of the 'heat of the moment' venting should belong it's just post after post which is then jumped on and extended by those wanting an argument.

Maybe I'm naive but I imagine this kind of experience will be limited to the big six and maybe West Ham, more due to the awful set up of the stadium for the latter. Unfortunately that is over a third of away games this season.

I met some of the old school yesterday. They were keen to talk about the banner and our sending them down in 2001. Don't deny that they have those fans. Or that most prem clubs have similar match day experiences. It's just that City are the apotheosis of it all. [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 12:00]

Football tourism is, unfortunately, big business and local fans get priced out of attending. I know someone who had promised his son that he'd take him to City while Haaland was still there. They went to the last game of the season and paid 18000 kroner for 2 tickets. Neither of them support City. [Post edited 25 Aug 2024 11:47]

City are no worse than Liverpool, Utd, Arsenal, Spurs, CHELSEA etc. It just the narrative against them is stronger. City have something like the 11th highest net spend in the last 5 years, but that's not spoken about much.

I suspect the narrative against them being stronger might have something to do with the unintentionally and beautifully ironic sequence of digits in your last paragraph!
