"Ashli Babbitt (The woman killed during the Capitol insurrection attempt) was a great patriot murdered by police" "Elections are bad." "Babies are being legally murdered minutes after they are born." Trump is indeed deranged- probably a narcissist. But George W has a LOT of blood on his hands - around 0.5m directly and indirectly, in a war who’s pretext was based on lies. That’s before we take into account Afghanistan too.

i don't remember many people saying it was the end of the world, let alone all guardian readers! i do remember thinking he'd be far worse for climate change than al gore and ll the evidence backs that up in spades. trump is a different level though as proven by the damage he did last time. he will probably be much worse now that the restraining adults are out of the room, and with his mental decline.

views about george w bush were pretty extreme at the time. he was seen as a half wit and on the extreme right. 'operation clark county' was the guardian's letter writing campaign which was intended to get voters in ohio (a swing state) to see the disaster they might inflict on the world. when he was elected and reelected the left here saw it as nothing short of a catastrophe. trump, and the people around him, is dreadful and nasty and a thoroughly bad thing. i desperately hope harris wins. but remembering the hyperbole that surrounded g w bush i take the stuff about trump winning meaning the end of democracy, civil war, or a new reign of fascism ( i exaggerate the channel 4 documentary only a little) with several pinches of salt.

Am not disagreeing with your second para at all. However, George W was at least capable of rational thinking & had some kind of notion of responsibility to his own country. T.rump's only apparent sense of obligation is to himself, his own power & wealth. He's outside the norms of conventional political behaviour (excepting the world's worst dictators), completely rogue, & that + his "charisma" are what make him so dangerous.

Trump is a real nutcase. on 21:24 - Sep 11 by Clapham_Junction | It's the end result of a sh1t electoral system (first past the post)* and heavily biased TV media. One of the reasons I am in favour of our constitutional monarchy is because I seriously believe we would end up with Farage as president if we had a head of state elected by a single public vote. * In fact it's even sh1tter than FPTP (quite an achievement) because of the electoral college. |
"One of the reasons I am in favour of our constitutional monarchy is because I seriously believe we would end up with Farage as president if we had a head of state elected by a single public vote." It's the main reason for me. As I've said a few times in TWTD threads over the years - President Thatcher, President Boris Johnson etc - ^shudder^. Ukraine did seem to get it right though! Part 2 (of 3) of 'The Zelensky Story' was on BBC2 last night - the last 5 mins was one of the most moving things I've seen on TV this year. "Churchill with an iPhone", as one reporter described him.

Trump is a real nutcase. on 09:53 - Sep 11 by Guthrum | Yes, it all comes down to those swing states, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada and Arizona. A few more might be heading that way, as demographic shifts affect the electoral landscape. Pennsylvania is tipped to be an interesting one this time round. Unlike targeting constituencies in the UK (which might win you one seat), it gains a whole block of votes. In all bar two (Maine and Nebraska, who only have 2 and 3 Electoral College delegates respectively), winning the state gives you the whole group - e.g. 16 in the case of Michigan. The risk from Trump himself will be mitigated if he does not control both houses of Congress. That puts serious limits upon what a President can achieve. If nothing else, every few months they have the ability to block funding for the government and wring concessions from the administration. Also (unless he can change the Constitution - which requires an unlikely supermajority) he only has one four-year term. That will affect how he is perceived both domestically and in the wider world. |
Not quite right on Maine and Nebraska. Each of these states has two electoral college votes awarded according to the popular vote for that state, same as the other 48 states. In addition these two states have college votes based on congressional districts; Maine has two of these district votes and Nebraska has three, thus Maine has a total of four electoral college votes and Nebraska has five. Forecasts are saying that 3 of Maine's votes are 'safe' Dem and 1 'leaning' Dem. And that 4 of Nebraska's votes are 'safe' Rep and 1 'leaning' Dem. [Post edited 12 Sep 2024 7:58]

This is probably pie in the sky extrapolation, I admit, but does anyone else think that the Florida hanging chads thing was an absolutely seismic and pivotal moment in the life of the planet Earth? Had Gore got in then, could there have been just enough impetus and international influence from the US to set the whole planet on a course to thermal salvation? (I can hear all the cynics (sorry, realists) screaming "Of course not, you fool. Rampant, suicidal, unchecked capitalist expansion and inevitable climate collapse is the way things are, the right way, and the way things shall ever be.")

This "we all need to work together" idea sounds good and all that, and yes when those in power are rallying around pure ideology it's rarely a good thing. Thankfully our system often encourages pragmatism even among those presenting as "conviction" politicians. Even Mrs Thatcher, who I have seen mentioned here, was able to be pragmatic and compromise at times, in the first half of her administration certainly. She just didn't make a song and dance about it. But effective government always means weighing up different choices and making a decision. There are usually winners and losers and competing priorities. You cannot eliminate competing ideas or opposition, in fact these are healthy features of a functioning democracy. Your model doesn't have to be quite as adversarial as our house of commons of course, but even more "consensus" based parliaments like we have in Europe or the Scottish parliament for example, will produce their share of aggro.

Concerning the removal by Starmer of Thatcher's portrait for a landscape, I thought this line by Sunak from yesterdays PMQs was funny. "I am not sure I heard a specific answer, but farmers also do great work to preserve the beauty of the British countryside—something I am sure the Prime Minister will appreciate, given his new-found preference for landscapes over political portraiture."

It depends on whether Al Qaeda had gone ahead with 9/11 if Gore had been President, and on his response to that event if they had. Some US oil interests, and ancillary "service companies", certainly did very well out of the Iraq war under Bush. Would Gore have limited himself to Afghanistan? If the Iraq War hadn't happened then the New Labour project would be viewed very differently, too.
