Trump is a real nutcase. 02:56 - Sep 11 with 18184 views | Mercian | Some of his paraphrased quotes from The Presidential Debate. "Immigrants are kidnapping and eating cats and dogs." "Ashli Babbitt (The woman killed during the Capitol insurrection attempt) was a great patriot murdered by police" "Elections are bad." "Babies are being legally murdered minutes after they are born." Trump is a real nutcase. on 10:04 - Sep 11 by gtsb1966 | People listened to Boris and... |
People listened to Blair and .... They always do. I am 74 and now I have come to the conclusion that if you listen to politicians and believe them you are as mad as Boris and Trump. They all promise this and that and whilst the American system and all the razzamataz is plain crazy people still fail to see that these people aren't in it for you and me, they are in it for themselves. Labour for instance knew the mess the economy was in after 14 years of Tory failure. yes they said they wouldn't put certain taxes up but conveniently forgot to mention the ones they will. They didn't mention the cutting of winter fuel payments for the elderly. Personally I will have a triple whammy as I don't get the full pension increase as I am on the old State Pension, I will pay more tax because the personal allowance will stay at £12,570 and I won't now receive the winter fuel payment. O.K. you might think as he is obviously getting additional income and yes I am. But some, not all on benefits get so much more free whereas I have to pay for everything. A person I know well who is on benefit had new fencing put in by the Council. Mine cost me £1,500. This person has just had a walk in shower installed, again free of charge. My bathroom needs a refurb. It will no doubt cost me a grand or so. This person drinks, smokes and gambles. I rarely drink, don't smoke and when I have a bet it's a fiver or a tenner. Evening things about doesn't work. They just even up those able to claim benefits with those that are comfortable but not with those well off.

Trump is a real nutcase. on 10:28 - Sep 11 by DinDjarin | Sadly she is losing big in the polls and more critically in all the swing states and its looking like a landslide for Trump. The Republicans are looking likely to win the senate as well as things stand. |
That is nonsense. The Economist update their prediction daily. Current prediction for electoral college is 270/268 in favour of Harris. Really too close to call.

We will see then wont we. Maybe did deeper into the polls like I do and see what the weighting is of who was polled - republican / democrat, male, female, black, white, old, young, education etc. Add to that Trump always scores low on polls I stand by what I said earlier, Trump will get over 300. Clinton was up 5 in polls and lost, Biden up by 9 and was 50,000 votes away from losing. For Harris to win she needs to be polling al least 5 higher.

If you're adding your own weighting to the published poll results, I can see where you're coming from - and I don't entirely disagree. National polls in the US are fairly meaningless anyway, given how the Electoral College works. Those in the swing states, where the decision actually matters, are a lot closer, if not favourable to Trump. But it will come down to relatively small numbers of voters again. I do think that Harris' greater appeal to women could make a difference (Biden had a couple of odd touchy-feely episodes leading up to 2020). Sure, not hardline conservative women, but they are most concentrated in already safe Republican states.

Trump is a real nutcase. on 08:40 - Sep 11 by NedPlimpton | To be fair, I don't think Harris' job is to win over any Trump supporters, just not to lose any of Biden's from last time around And Trump is doing a pretty good job of coming across as a loon to those who could be tempted to vote for him |
It all came down to Georgia and Arizona, last time. In Georgia, there was a huge grassroots campaign, led by Stacey Abrams and other African-American women, to get the Black vote out in Atlanta: https://thehill.com/changing-america/respect/diversity-inclusion/525387-how-stac Biden had seen a lot of goodwill amongst that community ebb away, and it wasn't a given that there would be the same passion to support him this time: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/jun/30/black-swing-voters-georg The first non-White Female Presidential candidate, fighting unambiguously in support of female reproductive rights, is much more likely to energise such grassroots movements. Biden was twitchy on Abortion, many believing this to be due to his Roman Catholic faith. Arizona was also hugely important and the former Representative, Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt, was a significant focal point for campaigning in that State, along with her husband, Mark Kelly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabby_Giffords https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Kelly Kelly was seen as a potential Vice Presidential running mate for Harris. Having been passed over for that role, will he, and Giffords, be as motivated to throw everything into this campaign? It's possible that he has a senior Cabinet post lined up, or he may remain as a Senator, contribute strongly to this campaign, and bide his time for a shot at the Presidential Elections post-Harris. If Stacie Abrams, and Giffords and Kelly, play as significant a role as they did in 2020, then Harris wins, in my opinion. There are different routes to an Electoral College majority in play for Harris this time, because of demographic shifts in some Southern states, but if she takes Georgia and Arizona, as Biden did, then she should be over the line.

Most of the swing state polls I've (casually) looked at have it fairly even or Harris up a touch. But they're all very small sample sizes for some reason? Whereabouts do you do your deeper digging exactly?

If Joe hadn't stepped down he'd have lost to Trump. With Kamala the dems have a much better chance. She's currently ahead in the polls I think. |
Shows how bad Biden had got, because Trump is an old lunatic who forgets what he's saying numerous times and just waffles around things and was made to look like Barack Obama next to Biden. Good that it can now be highlighted just how old and unsuitable Trump is in that regard

Trump is a real nutcase. on 10:22 - Sep 11 by SuperKieranMcKenna | He is even more unhinged than when he first started cos-playing as a politician. A half-sane Republican would throw some real world stuff at Kamala - many economists believe Biden’s $1.2trn infrastructure stimulus contributed to the severity of US inflation (Fed are behind the rest of the west in dropping interest rates), the strong dollar (which hurts exports), and US debt crisis (they almost defaulted on a payment last year, and it’s looking unsustainable without cuts). Instead he waffled on some bonkers claim about immigrants eating people’s pets…lunatic. |
Harris played that really well, when they were on the economy she spoke about how his rallies were boring and people just left them and then he couldn't let that lie so went on about how his rallies were great, the best ever, and no one went to hers and then on a key point he needed to hammer home he just didn't mention it as his ego took over. She knew when to poke him, and how he would react and he walked into it every time and missed the areas he should be strong on

What's the general feeling over in the US? You think Trump has a good chance? I know the US is very partisan so in states like Florida and Texas, they'll vote republican no matter what. But I'd hope the floating voters will side with Kamala Harris.

The fact Trump is even the candidate tells us there is a LOT wrong with this country. A lot can happen between now and Election Day but I would hope Harris has enough votes from women and people of colour to get the win. Although even if she wins it’ll just spark another wave of “the election was stolen” bleating from the orange-faced crybaby felon.

Same difference. Take into account the weighting of who is polled and the fact a lot of Trump voters are shy and wont openly admit it then she is behind. Anyone who knows anything about the last 2 elections will understand that being equal, a point ahead or behind will not cut it due to Trump always underperforming in polls which have been way way off 2016 and 2020. I don't care either way TBH but do have a morbid fascination in US politics.

She was the perfect prosecutor. Plant the seed and then let the defendant do the rest. And she knew he wouldn't be able to resist the 'slight' on his ego. You could even see his face change when she said it. The fact even his MAGA people in the spin room couldn't defend Trump's performance so went after the moderators instead, complaining they fact checked Trump multiple times (including the Dog/Cat eating) and not Harris. As someone on CNN pointed out, if he didn't lie as much they wouldn't fact check him as much.

They're already laying the groundwork for it on postal votes etc. I know it's 'only' Taylor Swift, but her dig at them on early voting and postal votes in her statement were perfect too. That will have had the Harris campaign fingerprints all over it and will be critical to Harris winning. Even now Trump is claiming he won the debate "by a lot" and a threat that "Taylor Swift will pay the price for her endorsement". Budget mob-boss again. [Post edited 11 Sep 2024 13:21]
