Sorry but I think you're missing the point.

In opposition Starmer complsined about Boris's freebies (while not against the rules) it added to the air of corruption - ie what do those people giving freebies want in return?
He said a Labour wouldn't do that, you're there to serve the public and would be totally open and honest to eliminate any undercurrent of corruption.

I really don't care about the football tickets or free suits as I don't think PMs earn enough. But ultimately if you're going to stand in front of a camera and say 'Sunak you taking that from donar XYZ gives an air of questionable dishonesty and Labour won't do that' then I expect him not to do it.

The difference is billions.

I struggle to see how anyone can think this is ok, I would prefer he turned up on the World stage in jeans and a T shirt....perhaps even a donkey jacket at the cenotaph.

Why? A friend and colleague with funds offers to support?

Boris freebies were actively concealed and we have never had clarity.

"Keir Starmer was given a further £16,000 worth of clothes by the Labour peer Waheed Alli, which was declared as money for his private office, the Guardian can reveal.
.....
These latest gifts were not previously known about as they were described as being “for the private office of the leader of the opposition”.

Starmer complained about not being declared. Johnson’s flat was against the rules as it wasn’t declared and as a consequence the Conservative Party was fined. Boris escaped breaking the ministerial code by claiming he didn’t know who funded it despite whatsapping Brownlow asking for more money towards the refurbishment. Breaking the code should have meant resigning just like Patel etc. and so on

Not when they're on totally different scales they're not.

One lot were committing fraud, for which they should be in prison.
The other lot are accepting gifts within the rules.

Captain Smeary is trying his hardest again, only there isn't so much to twist on Starmer as there was on Corbyn.

It’s not unreasonable to hope for more than “not as bad as the tories”. In fact, not as bad as Boris Johnson is about as low a bar as you could set on any subject matter. Are the tories worse? Yes. Is this still bad? Jesus Christ it’s not hard. Lots of people are really struggling right now, and I’m sure many of them love watching football with their son too.

Yeah, but that's without going into the billions (of our money) farmed out to their mates to make PPE that didn't work (largely because they'd never made it before).

Some people in this thread have lost their minds, or are averse to the facts. This is peanuts in comparison (and within the rules as opposed to utter corruption).

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I’m not against gifts, expenses etc if they are within then rules, declared etc as long as people, media etc are consistent in how it’s viewed. And if you take a gift, you understand why it’s being given and what that person wants. Nothing is free in this life.

People should be treated all the same when it comes to this. Sunak should not be pilloried any more or less than Starmer re expenses etc (unless he’s caught on the take) just because he’s an odious man fronting an odious party. There’s no ‘free pass’ from me for anyone in public life just because they are not part of Johnson’s shower.

As it goes, if what’s been published is correct, Starmer’s free stuff is out of kilter with just about every other politician. He hasn’t done anything wrong, but it makes me suspicious.

The reality is, if I had wanted to be a politician I would have been very careful what I accepted and from whom in gifts and claimed for. If you are a multi millionaire, why take the risk for what is to him a paltry £100k? Nor would I be beating up the opposition on such matters if I was living high on the hog doing the same.

Work for me meant sometimes claiming for expenses working for various employers in various ways. I got the odd gift, nights out, dinners you name it. But it was all meticulously recorded and declared and if there was any ‘grey areas’ then I’d pay for something myself. My ski chum travelled the world on the back of HMG and claimed literally for everything and kept his air miles. His successor wasn’t quite as thorough/savvy and was sacked. All for unnecessary greed.

In conclusion, what MPs are paid and can claim for, gifts etc needs looking at. Times change and what was once convention/acceptable, may not be now.

At least he was given more in free football tickets than he was on clothes which is prioritising correctly. Maybe I will vote for him next time after all.

Well I’m a socialist so I don’t see how that applies to me? The right wing press are sensationalising the entire narrative massively, but sometimes they can be right for the wrong reasons. Why do these donors give these “favours”? It’s not right.
