Saw them (the lead singer and the guitarist) playing in the pub that was Everybody’s Hobbies a fair few years ago. Think their accountant stole 500k from them. Which proves that a modestly successful band like them still made good money back then. Probably isn’t the same now.

I am a complete sucker for a horned section in rock. And that's probably why I love this album.
It was a number one album in the UK charts, but very few outside of those into their rock remember it (pretty sure it made it to that number one spot due to the song 'womankind' that was played on radio 1 a lot).
Hairy rockers' guitar solos, horned section, spitting image puppets, a rocking cover version, what's not to like? Love this album and the memories it brings back.

Still got my first press vinyl version. Oh look at me.
Edit - I only found this out the other year, did you know, if you have a first press Smiths record there’s a quote lightly inscribed in the run off in the centre of the record.
If we're talking about complete lack of commercial success but profound musical influence then it has to be the first albums of the Velvet Underground and the Ramones.

Completely forgotten about this album, and having a relisten.
I bought a special edition of the single "Soapbox" when it was released, packaged in a wooden packing crate ..!
