As a show of loyalty to those now out of the first XI I think we should keep the song the same, including the last line. Sod it.

Makes no sense. If they were what KM needed they'd be in the lineup.

If you want last season’s lot still in, how about..

He knows exactly what we need
Axel at the back

Town are going to hopefully finish 17th on goal difference

Or better still, future proof it.

Town didn’t win the league but got promoted and won the moral battle with our budget too

Yep, might as well eradicate those who got us up entirely.

Song lyrics can be historic, not factually current. Take that Boxing Day thing that a few still spout every home game.

I get the emotional links, but lets me honest about something here

Footballers, not just town but all footballers are well paid individuals.

They get paid a salary and Bonus's on top, they are paid to perform at the best they can achieve and thus doing so with the right management, good things can happen ( Promotion )

Now, we've had the promotions, we are now in a different stage of the project, thanks to those that were involved in getting us to where we are now, and IF your highest level can match those around you and enable the club to perform to a certain standard, then brilliant, but if not, then it is simply a case of thank you for being part of something great but we HAVE to move on. You were well paid previously, were rewarded with your efforts with salary increases, But as a club we move on.

I don’t see why you’ve got downvotes on this, or why some people are so against it. Football songs don’t need to be factually correct, ie we aren’t the finest football team the world has ever seen.

Woolf and Chaplin still very much a big part of our squad and also played a huge part of getting us to where we are now.

Finest football team is an opinion, you may no statistically be the finest football team, but to those than sing it its an opinionated chant.

KM knowing exactly what we need is selecting those on the pitch for that game, it doesn't make any sense and it's not really an opinionated chant if you use players names that aren't even playing. As you're either saying KM doesn't know what we need by his team selection if he hasn't actually selected the players your singing about.

Each to their own, but knowing what we need doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be playing that exact minute, there’s a reason we didn’t sell Chaplin and Woolf.

Also, it’s a chant sung at a football game, it isn’t that deep. Like when we aren’t actually in a library when we play at a quiet ground.

personally I don't agree with chants about players that aren't playing as imo chants should be about those on the pitch putting the effort in.

*written 'what we'd need' for verb tense agreement but sung like 'what we need' to keep to the tempo of the tune, thereby keeping the grammarians off our backs. I like this idea as it's the 2022/24 players' song to my mind as well as Kieran's, but odd to keep the names of players receiving little or no time on the pitch (see some lost causes still stuck on Ladapo while playing for Charlton), unless we change it to a celebration of last season's triumph. He does still know what we need though, so maybe a second verse acknowledging this with new starting players, it's a tough one. Put new players in and you're almost turning your back on two heroes still very much in our squad, but clearly not the players McKenna thinks we need right now.

Textbackup PM'd me an interesting alternative.

If the ball is on the right,
Tuanzebe and Burnsy

If the ball is in the middle,
Greavesy and Omari

If the ball is on the left,
Leify and Jacky (not Clarkey because that could be confusing)

There was also something about a 'thirsty for Hirsty' song but my eyes went out of focus at that point.
