Yesterday travelling by train. 07:15 - Oct 4 with 5750 viewsBenters

I went into Colchester yesterday from Benters Central,on the return journey I was greeted by two ticket inspectors on the approach to the station platform, not only that they had with them two ‘Revenue Protection Officers’.

I have never seen these before,I also got checked on the train by the conductor.I am old School and believe if you travel by train you should buy a ticket.

The funny thing was a couple of yoofs laden with pizza boxes thought they would just push past all four of these people, their argument was they were only going to the next stop so didn’t need to buy a ticket. They got turned around and wouldn’t let them on the platform.

So off they trudged down to the Hythe.

Agreed - anyone would think that they are responsible for hundreds of passengers daily and in control of a huge bit of kit over large distances.

Should be a minimum wage job.

Everyone who works on the train network is responsible for 100s of lives on each train, so we should pay them *all* a min of £70 grand. And then no one will be able to afford to use trains, bar the richest, of course. And then they'll need even bigger govt subsidies to keep on running, from lost ticket revenue.

I don't miss GA and the services into London. Paying extortionate amounts for a sub-par services was just torture. They also had staff just waiting to give you a penalty ticket at every turn.

However, trains north of the border aren't too much better. The temporary timetable made my commute during the 'summer' (pff lol) hell and now they have reinstated peak fares which not good for my pocket. It's still relatively cheap but not the point.

The one good thing they do is they protect their revenue reasonably well. Always a conductor on the train and you can buy tickets at the barrier and they are fairly decent people and customer service has always been ok too. It's not a bad service to be fair and it's priced better than down sarf (£4 each way atm, was previously nearer £15 each way)

compared to alot of countries around the world, I can assure you we have nothing like a third world train service in comparison. we have trains for a start, theyre mostly reliable, timetabled, frequent, not unnecessarily slow and useful.

alot of first world countries dont have train services that meet those standards.

heres an example in America, you have to check luggage in like an airline, and on some routes luggage is considered as anything bigger than a small rucksack, its down to the station staff to decide, which goes in a luggage car.

now the exciting thing is your luggage might not travel with you on the same train, it will end up (probably) in the same place as you, but not necessarily at the same time, it depends on how much space they have, the only way to guarantee it arrives on the train you are taking is to book it in a day early.

now think about that next time you take a train in the UK, everyone with a bag bigger than a small rucksack checking in their bags a day before just to ensure they have it at their destination when they arrive.

and then tell me the UK train service is third world.

Train service is good here really, but appears to me to be expensive at times. That said, the Hare Fare on GA means I've booked return trips from London to home games for £24 in Oct/Nov.

Trains in Germany for the football last Summer really surprised me. They were awful and routinely 45mins+ late with hopeless communication and seemingly general acceptance of poor performance.

Nationalise them for sure, but you still have a workforce and management that simply cost too much for poorer users to afford. Whats the point of trains if they're only for the well off?

The thing is I don't think our pension funds are responeable afor the train service in this country or the fares , thats down to management & workforce. Most trains I have found cancelled are usually due to train crew not turning up

Nothing to do with Abelio making huge profits and weighing off shareholders then.

Ha.

Don’t know any train drivers?

My mate is one and a toddler could do it, they have to do b*gger all.

Actually, my mate does less than b*gger all as he’s been off sick since I can remember.

With train drivers on £70k a year its not going to be cheap
[Post edited 4 Oct 2024 10:11]

We've had this discussion and you're still peddling this lie.

"In the United Kingdom, the average salary for a train driver is £57,796 per year, with an average additional cash compensation of £2,802. However, salaries can vary depending on the role, with freight train drivers earning an average of £44,418. Train drivers can expect to start with an average salary of £30,000."

Facts.

Basically they are in the cab incase something goes wrong. I have a client who happens to drive a train on Thames Link. He say's he's there to give passengers confidence, as trains are vertilly driverless.

Another lie you're repeating.

Train drivers wouldn't need to go on a 16 week training course if they're just "in the cab incase something goes wrong."

Let me tell you. A little bit of overtime and £70k is easy.

A LOT of overtime and £100k is achievable

I think you have just shot your argument to pieces if they only have to do a 16 week course. If you were tradesmen on a construction site you wouldn't be allowed to do more than sweep and make tea after 16 weeks training

That was an error, or was a preliminary course. This article from the Telegraph shows it's 9 months to a year training.

"People have this idea that a train driver just sits in the cab and pushes a button to drive the train – that’s really not the case. We control everything about the train: from the speed to the braking to the headlights to the doors. It’s an intense job. You need to be able to focus and react to things quickly, whether that’s a signal failing or someone on the track. The training is intense and takes nine months to a year."

I spoke with a Virgin airlines pilot once - and he said 9 out of 10 take off/landings are done by the computer. I asked why do we pay/employ them then?

He just smiled and asked "Would you get on a plane without a pilot?"

Until the technology is 99.9999% certain of not killing us, then I guess pilots, train drivers, taxi and lorry drivers will remain with us for a little while yet.

An ADR approved lorry driver with additional class 1 explosives licence will only be on about £17.50 an hour.........

..........and they have to deal with steering wheels.

Can't remember if I've said this on here or just IRL, but I reckon there will be a time in the future when people will be astonished to learn that humans were allowed to drive vehicles by themselves.
