What do people want? 00:13 - Oct 20 with 7766 viewsWonnorCickhamm

Lots of comments today re: Championship is more fun, better league etc.

Kind of agree.

But do people want us to be successful in that league but not too successful so we don’t go up?

Genuine question.

I want to be in a league interested in fostering genuine competition. Not one that puts the interests of armchair fans and global advertising revenue well above anything as troublesome as creating the elements for a level playing field. Kick out those big clubs to their super league and never let them back in - it's the only solution.

Genuine competition?

By which you mean, if there's any teams massively better than us I don't like it?

This is as genuine as the competition gets. Proving we belong against the elites of the sport

I want us to win every game we play. I want us to finish as high up as we can in whatever league we are in. The whole point is to win as much as possible. Why would you want to be in the Championship but not want promotion? Makes zero sense

Not sure what I want, but maybe we have to take a bit of pain and suck it up before we have our day again. We had 2 years of glorious sunshine after 20 years of gloom. It was amazing, but we're now paying for it. Perhaps a too soon promotion.

Don't care if we get relegated, but want to give it a go whilst we're here and and not be a walkover. Yesterday and West Ham we were terrible. Any other team in this league would want to play us. If we're going down, I want to go down fighting and look forward to next season.
I know Kieran is seen as saintly, but he now has to earn his money and reputation. Don't care about fancy football at tbe moment, but want to be at least be competitive and give teams a game.

Agree. We need to look like we did against Villa...every week.

You clearly didn't grow up watching football pre-Premier League. It wasn't all about money and teams other than the big clubs competed, even won things. This isn't competitive. We're up against a league that has stacked the deck in favour of half a dozen teams who monopolise revenue, don't share it, and actively are enabled to prevent anyone breaking their cartel.

I want us back in Europe. It looks a very long and arduous road right now, but that has to be the goal.

It's not really genuine is it as the money prevents it really being competitive. It takes a few years of the money to really make in roads in this league and it gets harder by the year to bridge the gap as the money at the top of the PL keeps those teams growing exponentially more than the Championship teams.

West Ham had a decent squad in the summer already and added to it with significant investment and look how they are struggling with results ... except against one team.

For town to not play like a newly promoted club and stop worrying about other teams threats and play our normal game. If we concede we concede but get at them. Get the crowds going get some crosses whipped in. Get clarke causing maybe inside and out. Get hutch tripping up fullbacks. Chappers finding the gaps in the box or szmodcis running behind delap and Phillips being given licence to roam and pass through the lines.

We lose. We lose. But we've tried.

This is why other countries - particularly the US - put in dramatically heavy rules and regulations to ensure there is competition. I've taken to watching a lot more baseball than the Premier League, as despite there being the same amount of money they haven't had consecutive winners since 2000. Even though you have some clubs with immensely more fans and money they can't spend it all on players or block others spending more than them - it makes for a far more exciting sporting spectacle, and even when - as looks likely this season - the two richest of them all, the Yankees and the Dodgers, make the World Series, it's a rare one-off rather than the interminably boring Man City v Liverpool, Arsenal or Man U we get year on year on year.

A ticket for a match for a start - never had problem getting one before. Going to matches since 1979 and continuing that after moving away in 1984 isn’t enough loyalty according to the system this season.

Anyway, that wasn’t your question - I would like us to compete every match a la Villa or somewhere near it. The last 2 matches have looked very different and I expect KMc to at least get us back to that level soon.

Wanting other teams to be neutered so newly promoted teams can easily accumulated wins is the opposite of competitive. It's artificially limiting.

United are amongst the richest clubs going and are squandering in mid table.

Newcastle, Villa, Spurs, Chelsea all challenging for the top 4.

West Ham qualified for and won the conference league.

Liverpool, Arsenal and City could well be in 3 horse race.

Leicester have won the premier league and more recently the FA cup

Just because we're struggling doesn't mean it isn't competitive

Anyone saying they want Championship, or Championship is more fun is a clown.

Everyone involved has worked their absolute honkers off to be in the best league in the world, and if you don’t want to stay there then football isn’t the one - because you should want to be at the very best level you can, and it doesn’t get bigger or better than the PL.

Nothing in life let alone football comes easy.

We are at the start of a new journey that may mean retaining a PL position this year otherwise the promotion has been quite important to the overall continuation of the club and its building to compete. It probably won’t end like we want it to this year, but we have to say we will be in a better situ next Aug than we were Aug 23 whatever happens this season. That cycle might look different in 4 years after a promotion relegation cycle.

All said, you can’t give up after 8 games, this team was always going to be a second half season team but we hope it’s done enough to still mean something at that stage.

In answer to your question, I would rather we were competing at the top of the PL.

It’s a bit early to throw in the towel. I don’t remember the infants on here being too happy in the exciting championship in the Evans era.

The genie is out of the bottle, we've made a deal with the devil and now need to get on with it.

When we were putting together the season we did last year, there are no good, exciting outcomes....

We go up, we then become a side that struggles, if we stay up we aim for 17th each season, when we go down it is with massive expectations of returning at the first try and if we fail then panic sets in as we run out of PPs down the line and disaster.

We don't go up, McKenna goes, Davis goes, a few others do and we are just a Championship team without parachute payments trying to fight against the tide and achieve an unlikely promotion.

The bigger picture is the club has been put into a fantastic position and we need to ensure that the whole club, town and community benefits from it in the short, medium and long term.

But week to week - for the forseeable future we are either going to be getting pumped in the PL, or playing under unbearable pressure in the Championship where every failure to win is a disaster.

Brighton and Brentford have seemingly made the leap, Bournemouth have yo-yoed into a position where they seem to currently as well - so there is hope, but it's threading the eye of a needle stuff

I want Town in the Champions League within this decade.

If our route requires another stint in the Championship next season so be it, we'll be more prepared for surviving the Prem when we bounce straight back up. Hopefully won't need to try and build a PL ready team from scratch, which has proved close to impossible.

Cut out mistakes and we will be far more competitive. Three at Man City, one against Villa, two at Wham and against Everton. All these cost us dearly, setting us back and increasing the momentum of the opposition.

All those mistakes were basic, not a case of being ripped apart.

After spending almost 15 years in the championship - you'd think people would remember how crap it is. I'd like us to stay in the premier league, it benefits the town and it's nice to have "our club" doing well.

It's a difficult one. I hate the Premier League and the money that is thrown at it, especially by the, obviously, more successful clubs. But if you don't want promotion, what's the point. Losing in the playoffs is gut wrenching and I hope I never have to witness it again. So, we just have to hope we can cling on, or yo-yo with another chance next time.
I, despite the result, had a great but messy day. After all the great pub recommendations from you good people, ended up at The Station with the Everton fans as my toffees mates had to get their tickets there. Their fans were a decent bunch. The air was filled with the sweet smell of cannabis. I don't smoke but it seemed very popular with the scousers.

This. I would be way, way more happier to win the FA Cup and come last than finish just finish 17th.

And that is what the problem is - dream on if you think we have any hope of ever winning anything again as things stand. It's just not possible in the modern era. This is why you need to remove the 'brands' as they have created a glass ceiling where they monopolise every trophy, every European place. And with Financial "Fair Play" they've stopped anyone even being able to find a benefactor to try and bridge this gap.

It's simply not like competing with like anymore. What is the point of us playing Arsenal, Man City or Man United. Even if we get the odd win you can't sustain it over the course of a season and you are destined to be patronised as you should be grateful to finish 14th, 15th whatever and possibly get one season where you get a 9th. I understand younger fans haven't been here before and want to get excited, but for those of us who have grown up with a league that was genuinely competitive this is really really underwhelming. And it's a Europe-wide problem - pretty much all leagues are now facing the problem of a handful of big brands with a global following monopolising the game supported by a cadre of cannon-fodder who are literally just there to make up the numbers.

To those pointing to Leicester winning, that was nearly ten years ago now, and the gap is way way bigger - don't expect the big clubs to ever let that happen again. Plus they pretty much went bust doing so and are incredibly lucky to have found a loophole that's allowed them not to end up wallowing at the bottom end of the Championship right now or at the very least facing a penalty this season that would guarantee them back there next...

That is exactly it. The Premier League is an entertainment source for foreign viewers. There were 40 Norwegian blues there on Saturday but they were all middle aged and started supporting Town in the 70s/80s.
The younger Norwegians are only interested in watching the big clubs.
