Sometimes the starting XI you land on ends up being one the management hadn't necessarily banked on, and I wonder if Ogbene's injury has facilitated that here. We look far more "us" with Chaplin back in that 10 role; more joined-up, more aware of the connections, more instinctive, a little more aggressive. Helps if he's playing well, of course, but the last two games suggest he can probably make the step to a decent degree. Think any really competitive version of this side will need at least three or four of those Championship survivors playing regularly, for this season anyway.

in a funny sort of way every now and then one players seems to give a team its identity and make it 'click'

Chappers seems too be very much that Ipswich player in this Ipswich team

So many people had written him off, along with Burgess.

Chaplin in at #10 , his almost ine touch football is ideal for the PL, and of course Omari wide right . The latter notably more effective yesterday. Szmodics not as effective wide left I thought as he probably would be in his more favoured #10 role.... is there a different formation McKenna could adopt therefore to maximise these players best features?

Szmodics did an awful lot of work tying up their defenders yesterday, along with Delap. It’s why after the first ten mins Leicester could get no momentum in the game. They were reduced to hoofing it down the line and hoping for the best.

Chaplin has been brilliant the last 2 games and deserves to keep his place but it’s hard because we’re not getting the dangerous Sammie Szmodics when he’s playing wide which is a shame.

If Szmodics is better in the 10 role, use him as a sub for Chaplin. I think the two worked together well last week and Szmodics has a big goal threat too.

To me. Szmodics works for Davis

Look at what happend when clarke came in.. we started having issues as he doesn't track runners.

It’s almost as though McKenna can’t see the obvious. His stats for mung bean eating must be poor

It’s probably a question of getting the balance right for physicality for Chaplin to be effective. At times last season him and Broadhead didn’t offer enough and we looked second best, West Brom away in particular.

Two really good games from him now and he looked determined to retain his place yesterday.

I think that with Smodicz and delap around him , there is compensation for his stature. Though will still be a bit physically limited on when he drifts right and works with Omari

Yes, think that yesterday (and Brentford) worked well for him as we were able to have spells of possession and pressure with decent amounts of space in front of their box. Think there'll be plenty of other games where we need more physicality and running power in the 3 behind the striker.

Probably shouldn't also go unnoticed that Johnson played well and him providing width and an extra option high up in their half allowed Chaplin and Omari to get on the ball and use it well.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I was wondering if maybe KM has been a bit too quick to sideline some of those who got us here (see also Woolfie and Mass). But we had to strengthen and it would be odd to not play your new signings. Chappers has looked as good as anyone in that role this season.

Who’d be a manager, eh?

Chaplin's performances in the last two games have been a real bonus. He has proved that he can have a significant part to play this season. Like many I was worried that he wouldn't cope well enough with the physicality but maybe he seems to have tweaked his game just a little to find a bit more space and time.

With Chaplin playing well we are invariably a much more cohesive side. He is the player who seems to have the best understanding of what KM wants from the side. Others like Davis and Hirst are very clear about their own roles but Chaplin seems to have that extra team wide view.

Importantly, CC adds to team leadership. His cajoling and energy when on form help fill the leadership gaps.

When he's playing well, Chaplin moves the ball quickly to either flank. He can see switches and whilst he has no pace to speak of, he can create himself half a yard for a snap shot.
We look half decent if we move the ball quickly. When we slow it down too much, we look pretty toothless.
In my opinion, Omari has to be on the right, the right ten if you like. Too crowded in the middle, a bit too physical for him at the moment and he can hang on to it for too long. On the right, he gets more chance to face up a full back, beat him and cause some danger. Centrally, he was runnining into trouble too often.

We clearly needed reinforcements. But I was surprised at how quick he benched last seasons starters for the new ones.

Woolfie has been especially unlucky. He was all but a permanent fixture under McKenna, key to the style from the back and really did veryblittle wrong in the first three games. Indeed, he was one of our best perfomers in Match 3 against Fulham. Barely seen him since then. Played against Everton due to O'Shea having to play right back. Did fine - straight back out against Brentford.
