Blimey, what on earth was Tyrone doing there?!! 19:00 - Nov 6 with 5255 viewsnorth_stand77

Picks up the ball in the penalty area after being played by Martinez, can only think Tyrone didn't hear refs whistle?

I think because Martinez didn't kick it from the 6 yard box Mings passed it back so he could take it again.

Truly impaired.

Ahh, ok.

Feel sorry for him, I've never seen a penalty given under those circumstances before!

Have seen grumbles about consistency as a similar incident happened between Arsenal and Bayern Munich last season and a penalty wasn’t awarded.

Regardless or the rights or the wrongs here, a lesson for defenders.

Why? He's handled in the box. It's a pen.

It feels like one of the spirit of the game things.

The bit I really don't get is why defenders do it at all. Is it some sort of time-wasting thing?

That wouldn't make it the right call.

Seems harsh to give it unless it's deemed as clear time wasting - but that feels difficult to prove. Realistically why would a player deliberately pick the ball up in the box if it's not an innocent action?

That the penalty was given?

Surely once the ref has done so once, the defenders don't repeat do they?

Yeah weird, you'd think as a footballer you'd mostly move the ball about with your feet (i.e. kick it back not pick it up and carry it).

I think that generally it is done to make it absolutely clear the kick hasn't been taken. Not sure why they do it at all, though!

The first is as well. Was it supposed to be a goal kick or did the keeper roll the ball whilst it was still in play? If the former, the goal kick definitely hasn't been taken as the keeper rolls the ball.

The first there is bizarre. If its in hand, then the decision is absolutely correct and the defender's actions inexplicable. If its a gk, the ball was never in play.

Tyrone saw the ball roll in front of him and presumably assumed the ball had come back from the crowd or something?

Or that the keeper had flicked it with his hand like they do (why do they do that?)

I can only imagine that what came before in Sitters' clip resulted in the defender thinking it was a goal kick while the ball was actually still in play. Very similar to the second one in the clip where the defender obviously expected the free kick to have been awarded and so picked up the ball whilst the ref decided it wasn't a free kick.

Was it ever explained why they changed the rules to allow defenders in the box at goal kicks. Did teams moan about it or was it just a rule they changed?

Really though, we really want the ref to give that a d not show a bit of common sense?

It's just so obviously not required to give a pen for it. Just get on with the game. Nobody is complaining there.

No, the last thing you want is ‘common sense’. We need refs to follow the rules, which are very clear in this case:

LAW 16: THE GOAL KICK
“The ball must be stationary and is kicked from any point within the goal area [6 yard box] by a player of the defending team”.
https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11

It’s an obvious penalty. And is also embarrassing for Tyrone if he thought it had to be taken from the 6 yard box line. I suspect he knew though and was just trying to waste time. Or he just had a brain fart.

He obviously didn't mean to, but defenders don't 'mean' to score own goals either. Are we disallowing them in the spirit of the game?

Asking referees to show common sense!?! I mean, I'd love it, but there's loads more areas I'd like to see them show common sense in before we get to that one!

Look, I know what you mean... but if you start letting people off because they made an honest mistake then you'll end up with players claiming all sorts of things as honest mistakes, saying they didn't hear a whistle, or did hear one (in the crowd), or their cat's just died...

If we're 0-0 in injury time in the last game, needing a win to stay up, and an opposition player does that - would you say no thanks, we don't want that pen, play on?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I'd love for refs to have - and be allowed to show - common sense.

Unfortunately you need them all to have it and be allowed to show it (and consistently) for it to work. You can't just show it to Tyrone Mings because he had a brain fart and you feel sorry for him.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
