This is either really disturbing or disgusting

Either the guy genuinely needs help and the PFA need to be offering it immediately, or if he doesn't, Fifa/The FA need to take action if he finds this funny.

it's absolutely ridiculous isn't. no one is capable of exercising any form or judgement or proportionately. yes self-harm is a serious issue, but that doesn't mean it can't be included in normal speech or indeed, as an abstract concept, be joked about. even death, which is a very bad thing, can still be joked about. people adopting an absolutist and puritanical approach to what can or can't be said, and looking to be offended just for the sake of demonstrating their sensitivity to offence, are killing* healthy social communication.

* ahhh, i referred to 'killing', but killing is of course very very bad and i should never use the word flippantly or figuratively. how can i be so insensitive?
[Post edited 27 Nov 2024 13:10]

It is no longer referred to as killing. Unaliving is the term you should now be using.

Disagree, there's differences between people making jokes, as we see and do on here, I myself have done in the past on this platform.

But he's a high profile figure, it's not responsible and when it's publically shown as part of an interview to a global audience it could have triggering effects.

My wife works in that area, and videos like that can be causes of self harm, (Hence i've put the trigger warning in my OP subject)

what utter nonsense. you seem determined to frame the world as full of fragile and vulnerable people entirely fixated by the minutiae of language. self-harm is a serious thing but mentioning those words in a general and light hearted context is not going to damage anyone. if you extend 'triggering' to passing references in everyday speech you are taking the idea to such an extreme that it becomes frankly silly and meaningless.

But, going back to your OP, it's neither disgusting nor disturbing

It's unfortunate and he's apologised. But from a human element, he was put on the spot about something and gave an awkward answer. He's not deliberately joking about it and there definitely doesn't need to be any action taking by the footballing authorities, as you've suggested

Perhaps it's not the subject that's the issue here, but the way you have made a drama out of it in your OP

Not everything needs to be so binary Frimmers. You've shared a post saying he needs to be 'locked in a padded cell' and claimed his throwaway comment is 'either really disturbing or disgusting'. So nothing in between? Either disturbing or disgusting. That's it. You go on to say he either 'needs help' or the FA needs to 'take action'. He made a clumsy comment, he apologised. That feels entirely proportionate. There's nothing more to it.

FFS, the world is going mad.

You're not understanding the issue that's the problem.

It's not just his remark that's the issue. The marks on his head and the mark on his nose along with his remarks can be the trigger. Was he put on the spot. Yes but he could have laughed it off as a flying boot or a fight with the ref. But using self harm along with the markings isn't great. You might not agree that's absolutely fine but the reason I've learned more about it is from my posting history and spending time learning from those about triggers and what may seem as having a laugh might not be to some.

Yeah I don't agree with the tweeters words on that. I've changed the video link.

I think action by the fa would be good tbh. Doesn't need to be a fine or anything but to acknowledge that it wasn't acceptable and by that it educates Pepe rather than just hid PR team putting out a statement. The fact they put one out there's shows it wasn't great. So well done them.

Or maybe there was a bit of a fight in the City dressing room between a couple of players, and he stepped between them and got caught a bit on his nose.

Then when he is asked about it in a press conference he deflected, clumsily, so as not to wnergise the "unrest in the dressing room" narrative.

I just made that up, obviously, but it's plausible.

I think "guy speaking his third language doesn't always get the nuances right when put on the spot" covers it nicely!

I've tried to stay out of this thread, but as someone who has struggled with SH for over 20 years, sometimes hearing these words in a general way can be triggering to people.

Whether that means that people should limit saying them is another thing (as you don't want to eradicate jokes entirely), but just because someone said something flippantly, or without ill-intent, doesn't give you or anyone the right to say whether others should feel triggered or upset by it. Mental health and subsequent reactions do not always follow the expected path.

don't be silly. a scratch on the nose isn't going to trigger anyone. your concern for imaginary victims is noble (in an imaginary sense), while also being a bit self-aggrandising and oppressive.
