Davis absolutely slaughtered on Match of the Day by Ashley Williams and Shearer. Have to say they were probably right. Can't believe how high he was for the first goal and he just kept on doing it. No way is he getting an England call up in the near future with that positional sense.

Well said Davis Clarke and Johnson are poor defenders at this level possibly work in progress I said before the game the wide areas can kill us.

I was worried about the match up between Clarke and Gordon before the game, but credit where it's due I thought Clarke did ok in the main. Did much better than I expected.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

He was clearly told to do that from kick-off and has always been told to do that in matches, others are told to cover and weren't.

Context is important but too complicated for MOTD and it seems yourself.

SB

In the first minute of a game against a very effective attacking unit, those instructions if given are suicidal.

We have a habit of conceding early goals. Surely we should feel our way into a game against elite opposition before committing ourselves.

I agree. We were talking about it at half time and thought he’d done well. Got exposed at times, but thats partly the system. Even the bloke who sits next to me who loathes Clarke and thinks he’s a pub player had to admit that!

Is he defensively poor though? I think an argument could be made that we don't really know as he's never asked to play as an orthodox defender where he would be concentrating on being in the right position for that rather than getting forward.

I think you're right on the England call to though, that seems a long way away at the moment.

SB

I think he's grown as a Premier League defender since the first two games. Yesterday was probably the first time he's looked vulnerable defensively since Man City.

And you I assume? Davis was also really poor in the final third and not up with the play at key times when we broke. He was abysmal yesterday. That’s not complicated, he just wasn’t at the races.

He had a poor game. As did most. It happens.

Sadly we don't have Big Al and the Beat covering.

It does on the face of it seem suicidal the way Davis gets right forward straight from kick off but that wasn’t helped by what ever that abysmal kick off was between Chaplin and Hutchinson followed by Burns racing across the field as the throw was taken leaving our left side totally exposed. At that moment our 3 number 10’s were all within 10 yards of each other on our right side!
Individual errors that have led to us conceding an early goal and setting the tone for the match.
As MOTD said it was totally naive. I’m sure McK does train them to close down and be on the front foot but I am sure he thinks that the players are savvy enough to pick their moments rather than charge Willy Nilly around the pitch like a bunch of primary school kids having a break time kick about

He has always made snidey comments and put downs towards other users. I don't understand the need for it either but do my best to ignore it.

Even Ashley Williams and Shearer don't understand the way he does.

I find the whole signing off as SB thing a bit weird too. I don't know why it bothers me.

SB is one of the long term good guys on here. Has been a bit more provocative in the last few months, but who knows what goes on in any of our lives. He’s always done his sign off thing - never been a problem for anyone until now it seems.

Apologies if it upsets you.

I commented to you a while ago that I like your (perhaps quirky) use of SB as a way of ending your posts.

I've always been an admirer of Davis, however, as much as I dislike Shearer he is absolutely correct. The problem we have is, if not Leif who's going to be the provider of the assist for the vast majority of our goals.

It puts a lot of onus on the left sided central defender but, Davis being so high is how we form our press. It’s been like that all last season and this and it’s vital to how we setup. It only mostly works because Davis is a great athlete and has an amazing engine and I suspect it being exploited now simply due to the higher abilities of the players in the Premier League.

Edit: from memory Leeds we’re the only team that really exploited it last season

Out of interest why do sign off with your initials? Power thing?

Just in case you think you are, you really aren't coming off very well in this exchange.

Not exactly cutting edge stuff from Williams.

"If I'm Burgess I don't care what my coach *who has just got us promoted twice in a row* says".

Williams is right though. Davis needs to defend first and foremost, but if McKenna is asking him to push forward, then perhaps McKenna is at fault. If we carry on playing the system we are, with the players we have, then we are almost certainly going down.
I would like McKenna to look at shutting up shop for a few games, just to try it, rather than the constant gung ho approach.
I am a huge fan of McKenna and think this is the first time I have questioned him, but if we don't play 3 in the middle at this level, then I am afraid we are going down.
Personally, I would like 4-3-3 or at worst 3-5-2.
We have Arsenal and then Chelsea, so we need to be more dominant in midfield. It's just to easy for teams to walk through us at the moment.

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.

Comment was fair and you were parroting.

I always know when someone knows they are in the wrong as they do the pathetic signature copying thing. Well done for reaffirming.

Is it really 'fair comment' to say:
"context is important but too complicated for MOTD and it seems yourself"

"and it seems yourself" comes across as unnecessary, perhaps even patronising. I don't get why you add that bit?

btw, I'm always interested in your views, they are almost always thought provoking and considered.

Every neutral fan I have watched a game with has said the same about Davis.

Good enough going forward to play at the highest level, but as a defender has work to do before he will get anywhere near an international call-up. Our blue tinted glasses seem to negate the fact that despite the fact he creates countless chances, he is getting found out at this level defensively.

I think the answer is a lot of training and coaching, but in the meantime we need to go to three at the back as that will offer him protection whilst also allowing him to get forward.

Neither of our full backs are great positionally to be honest, Axel is by far the best one we have at the club in terms of defending, standing his ground and positioning. Maybe he doesn't offer a huge amount going forward but he's a vastly better defender than Clarke and Davis.

It's always an interesting take when they say 'not good enough' for an England call up. The recent draw for the WC has England in a group of absolute dross. As usual...

Davis would face little or nothing in those games that would be equal to, let alone better, than the PL players he is up against every week.

It may have been a touch harsh but it was late and I was more than a tad bored of posters making posts about Davis which didn't consider context. He hadn't considered the context at all and didn't in subsequent posts so the evidence would seem to be on my side. He just had a pop back about me signing off posts with initials rather than debate the actual context of the situation.

Seems plenty agreed with my original assessment.

MOTD crew correcting themselves on Lineker’s podcast today:

“Yeah, although Ashley Williams was quite critical one of his performances in a recent analysis. But I think that was more a tactical thing of how the manager shaped up for that particular game.”
