Another soulless stadium 09:56 - Dec 28 with 2931 views | DJR | Having been to the new stadia at Man City, West Ham, Spurs and Arsenal for the first time this season, I can't say I am impressed by the experience or atmosphere. Admittedly, the atmosphere will presumably better for more high profile games, but the very design doesn't seem conducive to producing the sort of noise that the old single stands could produce, especially when you factor in a number of "tourist" fans. In my view there is nothing to beat a 4 stand stadium for atmosphere such as Wolves and Forest. Indeed, the best noise produced this season was in my view that produced at Wolves, once they had equalised, from the vast single tier stand behind one goal. [Post edited 28 Dec 2024 9:57]

Another soulless stadium on 10:03 - Dec 28 with 2864 views | victorysquad | our away support was pretty lame last night too. Why is it, we are playing Arsenal away and there are 6-10 people trying to get something going, and 90% of our support are doing feck all? Someone needs to explain that one to me. I really wish people that are taking up tickets, and not singing, would just stay at home and watch it on the telly. Give your tickets to someone who is going to get behind the team. Another soulless stadium on 10:11 - Dec 28 with 2807 views | Churchman | Went to the Emirates for the League Cup game at the end of Keane’s time (sat two down from Wilnis and David Wright, strangely enough) and wasn’t particularly impressed. Seen NFL at Spurs, athletics at West Ham and been to one or two of the identikit others - Leicester and Southampton. You are right. The facilities and viewing is great, but there’s something utterly characterless and anodyne about them for me. Of them, Spurs is an amazing stadium and makes Wembley look very second rate. But it’s still without a soul. Maybe I am being a nostalgic, sad old git that knew Highbury and White Hart Lane well and need to embrace the new football corporate PL now when it comes to stadiums. Or not!

I didn't think the layout (an elongated rectangle straddling the corner and with not that many rows) was particularly conducive to communal singing. Indeed, it was sometimes hard to tell whether those behind the goal singing were Ipswich fans or Arsenal fans. Putting it another way, it struck me as being not dissimilar to Portman Road, where Blue Action being in a separate stand has not necessarily had the effect that one might have thought. Similar layout to the away section at Spurs, and we made plenty of noise that afternoon.

Being at the 'Clock End' at Highbury for the semi final against WBA was magical.

I sat on the 'left side' first half last night and it wasn't bad at all, second half I moved to the 'right side' and it was noticeably quieter but weirdly, you couldn't really hear what the other side were signing (starting) exactly as another poster has mentioned. It really didn't carry in the slightest. Wasn't bad last night.....then consider our team didn't have a shot, I think on the whole we did pretty well between us. You have to remember that moments on the pitch are also needed to initiate involvement. Fair play to the two guys beside/behind me in first half, really made a great effort on starting stuff off. Another stadium with millions spent and probably some of that has design elements to eek every home advantage possible by stifling away crowd noise. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It was! There was only one goal scored at our end, but boy what a moment. Of all the special moments I’ve been so lucky to witness, that’s the one. I liked Highbury. I went there a good few times and it was always special.
Did I imagine it.... on 15:23 - Dec 28 with 2106 views | Bloots | ....or did they pump the atmosphere out through the PA system towards the end of the match? At one stage, I think we may have had a corner, there was a sudden loud chant of "Arsenal, Arsenal" coming from behind us. Seemed odd that a stand that had been silent for the whole match suddenly burst into perfect voice for about 10 seconds and then fell silent again. I know it's been rumoured in the past that they play crowd noise through the speakers, but I never believed it till that moment.

The away fan section at Tottenham seemed much more cohesive, perhaps because it was steeper or higher and thus felt less elongated. But I suppose it helped that we did much better in that game.

Another soulless stadium on 17:11 - Dec 28 with 1940 views | stonojnr | well you could argue its just a bigger scale version of what happened with our North/South stand rebuilds. they didnt design stands/stadiums properly for football atmosphere or promoting crowd noise, which is stupid really but there we go, thats what theyve got and theyve got to work with it, I thought theyd said it was going to take a decade or more to recreate the atmosphere of the old Highbury, I guess theyre still working on it. I do remember from that league cup game alot of the Arsenal "fans" were tourists, one guy I could see literally videod the whole game, instead of a) watching it live or b) getting involved in the game. You dont need many fans like that in a crowd to completely disrupt the momentum in atmosphere. with ManCity & West Ham youve got to remember they were never built as football stadiums, they are multi purpose venues, so I dont expect the atmosphere to be anything other than rubbish for football. its like when I see what an abomination theyve made of some of the Aussie cricket grounds now to suit AFL, and be multi purpose, theyre terrible for creating crowd atmosphere, and soulless to play at. the joke at the Gabba was you literally had to ask for directions how to get off the pitch because from the middle all the stands look the same.

Modern football stadia & the people who attend football these days are not conducive to old fashioned "atmosphere". This has changed forever & it isn't coming back. Just move on - some people like to complain about it every week.

Another soulless stadium on 17:21 - Dec 28 with 1896 views | Swansea_Blue | Completely agree. It’s a lovely ground though, even if the away area isn’t best-placed. Very swish. And on the rare occasion you do get a roar, you really notice the extra voices, much like Wembley. However, whenever I’ve been there it’s been pretty flat and more akin to the crowds you get for the ladies game (which is fine, but just not a typical lairy crowd full of boozed up blokes). And they don’t have much resilience. Go behind and it completely dies. It’s been a while since I was there, but it was chuffin expensive too if I remember right.

Yeah, it was really hard to tell from where we were sat. Even Edward Ebeneezer only heard that as it came to its end. But I was disappointed with our efforts last night - I’m nearly 60 and found myself in a minority of one trying to sing along at times.

Please tell me where you can find a boozed up football crowd of lairy blokes, unless it's in a pub with Sky Sports.

They still exist, in pockets and are in their natural habitat at away matches. They are on the endangered species list though…

It is fine if you don't want to sing, but the point is, you are taking the ticket from someone who would otherwise get behind the team. There will always be split opinions on this subject. But I don't think people have to 'move on', just because you don't want to talk about it. If you take one of the 3,000 tickets, and the home team has 57,000 tickets, we need to make every one count of those 3,000 count, because it makes a difference.

Another soulless stadium on 21:22 - Dec 28 with 1477 views | JakeITFC | Just because it always gets a terrible rep atmosphere wise, I went to the Emirates for an Arsenal v Man United game some years ago (United won under Mourinho, Lingard scored and de Gea had a worldie) and I think Ipswich games aside that’s the best club game atmosphere of a game I’ve ever been to, was brilliant that evening.
Another soulless stadium on 23:01 - Dec 28 with 1271 views | Tony73 | I would agree with earlier post - Wolves at 1-1 is best I've heard this season from home crowd. I quite like the larger new grounds from architectual perspective but from a football atmosphere perspective they're just too big/poorly designed.
