Looked it up they paid 13.5m but add 30% to that and you have his value as of the summer 18m aprox. Don’t think it will be far from this tbh. Let’s hope they take a hit on it.

£21 million plus add ons reportedly.

January is never a good time to sign players from a financial point of view as selling clubs are in the driving seat. Villa have added a decent premium from their perspective.

There’s levels though. Not quite being good enough for champions league Villa right now doesn’t mean he’s not of a level that can improve us. Plus he’s young, plenty of time to keep improving and we know how McKenna can develop players.

Philogene’s a naughty player, I think he’ll shine for us. Hopefully Greaves & Delap are getting in his ear.

Mckenna must be a big draw for players like him. They must see what KM has done for other players and think 'I would like a bit of that'.

Wonder if this ends our interest in Doak. I suspect not.
Phillips hasn’t impressed me, I maybe in the minority. Obviously has it in him but not seen it yet.

To be honest I’m not really that fussed about signing him, and wasn’t in the summer either. However I do very much seem to be in the minority so there may be something about him that I’m not seeing and haven’t seen every time I’ve watched him play.

I’d also be a bit pissed because the messing about in the summer cost us time and we possibly had to go chuck a load of money at our second or third choice instead who hasn’t exactly delivered.

I was more excited by the Clarke and Szmodics signings but I trust McKenna's judgement.

From what I saw of Philogene last season on tv (only saw a recording of the home game) I thought he looked a cracking player. Similar level to Clarke.

Agree with you and my fingers are crossed that he's mustard for us. Villa have Champ footy and a relegation battle in recent memory though, on top of knowing what's required at this level, so when fans make the comments they have in his dedicated thread, I'm reticent to dismiss them all.

He's had a far greater struggle than Clarke for us, in a side that enjoys more possession, control, better players etc.. Clarke had better output last season too but I wanted Philogene more in the summer, because Philogene was the unknown that lets fans dream big. Now both have tasted the furnace, and Clarke's dribbling success of 73% is a long way ahead of Philogene's 33%. Clarke's minutes also average out to an assist every three games, and he was unfortunate to hit the post against Fulham / have the pen disallowed against Everton. Philogene has no assists, no shots on target, it's been a genuine struggle and I hope this is an instant new positive chapter for him.

Philogene was the stand out for me and I think has a higher ceiling. He has more pace which is important in the prem.

Really like Clarke but 5 of his 10 goals were pens. They still count but Philogene had more assists and close on the goals. Hard to call on stats alone.

Hope Clarke can come good but wonder if he might be loaned (if for example we get Doak/Wimmer or another on right)

I'm kind of with you on this , he has now been sold 3 times in the last four transfer windows. I presume Villa won't have another buy back clause ? But if he does well his agent will be angling for another move in the summer.

But we could do with him hitting the ground running - especially with Hutch injured.

Clarke won the most penalties in the league, in fairness, so probably had a right to take them! But I agree we should live by the eye test where we can.

Broadhead's been a joy on his return and Szmodics is best at finding scoring positions, but I'd still be sad to lose the option of bringing on Clarke.

Honestly I was hoping we could strike lucky with a Hudson-Odoi type this window - an unhappy player who's once been successful at this level, and is surprisingly affordable - but appreciate those opportunities are rare.

Are the add-ons a buy-back clause at a 20% discount?
Villa are treating players as commodities/products/cattle.
Football is just a game to them.

If the figure is correct, (and it’s often slightly lower) then Villa have made about £12m on him, with Hull’s fee, their buyback and then our fee.

It does make Philogene (he’s my lover) seem like nothing more than a commodity though when Villa hijacked our signing only to sell him to us later. Makes you wonder if they ever really wanted him.

I called it out at the time and I'm sure you did too.
They deprived a rival of added firepower.
The rival gets their man after 4 months and Villa bank an easy profit of £4mill less the wages.
If Ashton pulled a stunt like this (and he will in future seasons) we'd laud him as a God+.
* The + is 'cos I already rate him as a god.

Same opinion here regarding Phillips. Has shown nothing to suggest he should be starting, had done ok in a few cameo aub appearances, but nothing more and hasn't been available to us for about half the season either. Nothing against the lad,I was hoping it was a gamble that paid off,but clearly it hasn't (so far)
