Is it also possible to call out the "over-the-top" exaggerations about his ability last season when he scored 3 tap-ins and a dead-rubber penalty. He was hailed as the hottest property in football. After a couple of games, I couldn't work out what the fuss was about as he could hardly control a ball.... yet.... he ran around a lot and filled a void whilst Hirst was injured. For me, he needs to get out for his own good as if he sticks around it will just get worse. If a L1 or L2 club comes in with a 250k bid for him.... I'd accept. It was a punt and we can afford to take a comparatively small loss on him and both parties need to move on. A loan is more realistic, but surely it has to be L1 at best.

So are you saying in that first bit, yes people who support this club are going above and beyond to slag him off and be idiots when everyone now realises he's not good enough, but what about those who support this club and were quite excited about him playing for the club they support and scoring a few goals? Enthusiastic support for a new player is equal to keeping on and slagging off a player not up to playing at the very highest level but forced to through no fault of his own? [Post edited 13 Jan 6:59]

It not really about being ‘more reasonable’ towards AAH and not be overly mean’. It is about being fair. He is 22 years old. He is getting called ‘sht’ on here, cart horse and I’ve no doubt every other name under the sun in the ground, as is Muric. It isn’t right. How can constant abuse help? He is our player and is doing his best as I say, at the age of 22, trying to play at the top level. But it seems to me there are idiots out there that prefer to hear the sound of their own voice, see themselves as influencers that if they shout loud enough it might help force a player out. Before they do the same to the next scapegoat - which my guess will be Jack Clarke. Something to feel good about in their own disappointing lives. Who will benefit? Are these fonts of all knowledge going to feel good about themselves? Yes, so that’s a benefit. Will it help the club? No. The player? No. The supporter who has to sit next to an ignoramus every game while he loudly slags off Harry Clarke even when he’s on the bench? No. It is utterly destructive. Everybody knows why AAH was bought. McKenna has explained it; it’s been quoted in this thread. If people think he was telling lies, call him out. Everybody can see what level AAH is playing to. Is it his fault Hirst has been injured all season? Is it his fault he’s had an injury? No. Is it down to him we are a forward light? No. It is what it is. Is it his fault we got promoted? Partially because he contributed. It’s actually a skill to be on the end of tap ins by the way. And if the penalty was meaningless because it was a dead rubber, best not to slag him off for yesterday’s horrible miss because that was a dead rubber too. I don’t remember AAH be called ‘the hottest property in football’. Please provide the link because that’s some claim for an L2 player. He was certainly a player a number of clubs looked at and wanted. He was signed as potential - see McKenna’s comments. People are not blind. They can see what level he is playing at and it’s as obvious that he needs week in week out football at Championship or L1 level. But while he is with us, a little bit of support instead of constant sometimes OTT abuse might just help. He is doing his best. He will get my support as long as he’s doing that. What a massive over reaction. He’s been massively supported in every game. The ONLY time people turned was when he failed to chase the ball vs Fulham, when the entire away end gave him a ‘ffs run for it’ Yesterday no boos, most just laughed, or turned to their mate to give them that look where you both know what you’re thinking. If you wanted to support him that aggressively you should have ran on to give him a hug. A few comments on here isn’t a witch hunt or serious abuse. It’s a fcking football forum. And as mentioned, it’s brilliant how we aren’t allowed to call a player a cart horse, but we are allowed to call one another a pr1ck, Fanny, to55er… the irony 😂

Just like there is as much ‘hate’ as you’re all making out now then… There were some well OTT reviews about him last season, I’m sure many will recall. But as fans you can get excited about a player can’t you? And on the flip side you can also say you think they are pretty naff.

He was kept because we couldn't agree deals for any other striker(s) ya silly sausage. So yes, in that respect I guess we should blame Ashton. Not sure what your point is, if anything. And yeh that penalty was hilarious! Not sure how many would be laughing if it that happened in a tight league game. Obvioiusly. But that's where we are, and to the OP yes we will surely get in another striker very soon (hopefully). :)

PRAY we get another striker in this month. on 17:02 - Jan 12 by wkj | Lad needs a bit of grease in his wheels. He obviously shows McKenna enough on the training pitch to remain in the picture, maybe has a bit of stage fright about him on the night. Either way, he probably needs a confidence booster soon. |
He does need a confidence booster and he would have got one yesterday at 3-0 in the 1st half, had Jack Taylor squared the ball to him instead of shooting from a narrow angle. A great move down our right hand side involving Phillips and (I think) Burns, who slipped the ball to Taylor. Ali made a great run in front of his marker, screaming for the ball, but Taylor chose to shoot. Had Ali scored, who knows, he may have taken the penalty with more confidence and ended up with a brace.

He was standing behind the defender at the time the ball left Taylor’s foot. Also, speaks volumes that JT shot from there instead of looking for the striker in the box…

I haven't seen it back, but I was directly behind that goal (lower tier) and, at the time, everyone around me was bemoaning that JT didn't play a simple pass. We clearly heard Ali scream for the ball and give JT some pelters afterwards. The fact that JT chose to take a much more difficult shot is a poor reflection on him (if a pass would have led to an easier chance).

It did. I distinctly remember some getting their calculators out and calculating his goal to minute ratio ... and stating he was topping the charts. It was a weird and daft statement as he bundled some balls in at the end of some games when we'd already won these games and it didn't really reflect his real ability and worth to the team. But he put in the effort and many appreciated that, without showing much else. Point is.... if you don't like the comments at one end of the spectrum... then don't make them at the other end. Bit of balance and we'll take the rough with the smooth.

I don't see the point in people being nasty or making him a laughing stock though. I think pretty much everyone can agree he's not a PL player and he's being thrown in the deep end well above his level at the moment. We obviously didn't get the striker we wanted and Hirst got injured so he has been forced to play. It's not his fault he isn't at the level right now, I suspect he is well aware of this himself. Personally I’d side with JT, ‘if’ he looked up and thought ‘he’s behind the defender’ then I see why he opted to shoot. My money is on if that were Delap or Hirst in the middle that he’s playing that ball across

I think it was more simple than that. I was watching JT as he received the ball. He didn't look up or spot Ali (he may have done before he received the ball, I don't know) but instead he focussed solely on the shot. It was a really difficult chance and he couldn't get over the ball. As it sailed over the bar, Ali completed his run into the goal, in front of his defender, and he turned to berate JT, who held up his hand in acknowledgment. We all know that Ali doesn't have the same level of movement or technique as Delap or Hirst, but Ali must have been no more than 7/8 yards out and running towards the middle of the goal when JT received the ball. He should have played what was a simple square pass. It 's a pity he didn't because there was a very good chance that Ali would have scored. Goals give players confidence and that, unfortunately, was a missed opportunity (as was the penalty of course).

Totally agree. I thought the cart horse post on here was disgusting, but seeing who it came from, I'm not surprised. These people that post this shyte are not true supporters in my opinion. Yes by all means say if a certain player is not your flavour, but really is it necessary to label a young player this way, a player incidentally that Mckenna sees potential in.

Being in the right place at the right time is actually a skill. Top players like Lineker made a living off it. Nobody chalks a load of his goals off because they were tap ins or when his team were two or three up. People might have enjoyed the stats on goals per minute but you’d need a desperate search to find anyone at the time who would have expected him to start before Moore or Hirst or who thought he was anything but a young player with potential. AAH showed plenty of good attributes for a 21 year old making his first appearances in the second tier of the game but he needs regular football now, assuming he is fit. If not, he needs getting right before playing again. It’s interesting you use the word ‘balance’. There isn’t much of that with some any more than there is ‘objectivity’ with posters that started on Muric after his first game and haven’t stopped since. Morsy 4th January on Muric: ‘I think he’s become a little bit of a scapegoat amongst the fanbase’. Players and people are not deaf or blind and KM/SM were in my view right to raise this. Scapegoating applies to AAH too if he’s going to be called sht and carthorse on a public forum. But it’s clear some of our brave supporters disagree, know better and will continue to dish it out to current players regardless of any consequences. Oh well, it’s a free (sort of) country.
