Watching Everton thump Spurs 15:09 - Jan 19 with 1689 viewsNeverSayDie

should really serve as a reality check. Everton have a vastly superior squad to us, players who have been hugely underperforming, BUT they can be unlocked and instantly improve. We simply aren’t on a level playing field with these sides, there’s nothing more to unlock, only a prolonged spell in the top flight and a massive investment in players can alter that.

Our target is to stay up and I believe it’s achievable, but the likelihood reduces each week we don’t add new players to the squad, we need another 3 or 4 in this window to stand a chance, time is running out.

A flash in the pan doesn’t make Everton a good team.

No but Moyes' appointment may well do.

Beating Spurs as a benchmark for how far behind we are is also strange, though, considering ... we beat them at White Hart Lane anyway ... and 10 other sides have already beaten them. They have lost more than half their matches and is about to become 12 of 22.

We all thought beating Spurs and Chelsea would make us great. It hasn’t happened unfortunately.

We do not need 3 or 4 more players to stand a chance of staying up. That's a ridiculous take. We are currently in the drop zone purely on goals scored.

I’ve been saying for weeks that Spurs look vulnerable, and may get reeled into the relegation mini league. This only reinforces that view.

Did you? OK. It hasn't? You were expecting a top half finish after that were you?

Beating Spurs isn’t the benchmark, it’s the Everton performance, the players look reinvigorated and they’re making oodles of chances and scoring a load of goals, look strong at the back, all the things they haven’t done for a long time.

No, but it gave some of us a little bit of hope of being more competitive against the teams around us with the extra confidence gained from those results.

We all have different views, seeing Morsy and Taylor come on as our impact subs against Brighton at 0-1 should highlight just how poor the squad depth is and the need for new players IMO.

A below avg prem team beating another below avg prem team. I don’t think the appt of Moyes changes a huge amount. True we are not better than either of these teams, but on our day both are beatable.

That last 10 minutes confirms that was just a one off win, and they will not pull away from us and Wolves.

You thought they were the impact subs rather than Hirst and Clarke with Philogene added to the squad and Szmodics and Chaplin to return. I can see why you think we need 3 or 4 more then. As a matter of interest, which 3 do you expect to leave out of the squad if we are to sign 4 more?

I don't think the sensible ones did.

Every single game is incredibly hard, Brighton had lost only 4 games this season, but some had the opinion that it was 3 points on Thursday.

I feel it's going all the way this year and hopefully we give ourselves the very best chance at the end.

On the flip side, let's not rule out us doing the same to Spurs at some point!

Very odd how 10 minutes of a match can lead to such clear conclusions!

Ours was an away win, with the same margin, meaning we are better than Everton.

In fairness, every team other than Leicester and Southampton should have a vastly superior squad to us. These are established Premier League teams which just need a tweak with a £40 million player here and there rather than having to completely overhaul their squad the way we have.

The odds are always stacked against the promoted teams. Especially one like ours which hasn't been in the Premier League recently. Even Leicester and Southampton will have some players remaining from the last time they were here.

To be in touching distance of Everton and Wolves is achievement in itself.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
