Trump also signed an executive order temporarily delaying the enforcement of a federal ban on TikTok for at least 75 days. “I guess I have a warm spot for TikTok that I didn’t have originally,” Trump said at the White House.

The difference is that Putin and his madmen are there indefinitely. Trump will be gone in four years should he survive that long. Which I doubt.

A lot of his stuff is hot air anyway. He will do plenty of harm to others but a heck of a lot more to America in the long term.

Interesting theoretical question - if China, Russia and America divide up the world Gillray style (see attached below), would you prefer this country to become a State of the USA with the orange one or a satellite of the Russian Empire with that nice Mr Putin looking after your welfare?

what's the mechanism for getting rid of trump in under 4 years though? he'll have a succession plan in place for beyond. if his team loses, he'll fight and he has 4 years' to plan for it this time

unfortunately, the hot air he'll belch out with his drilling will cause a lot of damage to the world at large.

on the pudding question, i really can't see much difference at the moment!

It's a black day for humanity and the planet Earth.

I know that we just got stuffed 6-0, but get some perspective!
Some things will go in a negative direction, a lot of things will go in a positive direction, and then America will have a chance to reevaluate in 4 years and see if they want to go in a different direction. If Trump is a disaster for the American people he will get kicked out just as the Democrats have been. The same thing goes for Starmer.
If you hate Trump by all means count down the days until he is out of office, but as someone who has kids, I have to be positive and get on with things because there are so many positive things outside of politics, and it really is a waste of energy upsetting yourself about things out of your control.

Trump may be gone, but their plans are clearly beyond that 4 years.

Vance is much more aligned to the rich-bros cartel now surrounding the White House. And then they'll pass it onto another member of the Trump family etc etc.

We've got to get through the next 4 years of course first.

The phrase "crossing the Rubicon" springs to mind because Trump has done, and will do, things that no previous President has done or would ever do, and it is difficult to see a future Republican candidate rowing back, or being able to row back, from that.

Precisely.
Perhaps all his apologists including those on here will revise their views now

How do you mean?
First of all. The whole concept of the executive order needs to be revised. All Presidents in living memory have abused executive orders. From what I can see it is a vast overstepping of power. Most of them are just resending prior executive orders.
It is absolutely ridiculous that a President can pardon basically whoever he wants and Biden even pre-emptively pardoned himself and his family. The flip side of the pardoning is that a lot of prosecutions are political and if you look at the details of what people actually did, many of the prosecutions and sentences were disproportionate.
Some of the executive orders are reasonable, some I disagree with, and others like renaming the Gulf of Mexico just come off as a ridiculous waste of time.

His death. I don’t think he will last 4 years.

I have faith (or hope?) that the American constitution and legal system is strong enough to resist a form of dictatorship that he’s likely to try and generate.

If his idiotic protectionist policies amount to anything, he will actually make the US even less competitive in the medium/long term and I can see American tearing itself apart.

Tend to think like this, we’ve had much darker periods in history and I’m thankful I never had to live through them. This gigantic bellend is here, as with all populists people will realise he’s not delivered on any of his ridiculous promises. Plus he’s a threat in every way to the economic juggernaut that is the US, the nepotism, trade barriers, erosion of a stable legal system etc - he’ll be toast. Then it’ll flip to whatever mediocre candidate the Dems put up next. Ad infinitum.

Given the daily threads on Israel I’m surprised there’s not elation on the ceasefire on here. However precarious the agreement, the end of mass destruction and death is surely a great thing. It’s almost like some people just like howling at the moon.

Trump....all you need to know. on 11:00 - Jan 21 by DJR

The corollary of America First is World Last, and his executive orders in relation to climate change and the WHO (a UN body) are indicative of this and particularly depressing.

Admittedly, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation contribution to the WHO is roughly the same as that of the US, and so can presumably easily be made up, but it's the message that it sends that the US doesn't care about improving health in the world, driven no doubt to a large extent because of misinformation in relation to Covid.

Interestingly, a contrast with 2016 is that steps were taken then to ensure Trump kept his business interest separate from his role as President. That has completely gone by the wayside given he is using his Presidency to promote his and his wife's own cryptocurrencies and thus make billions. And he is enabling billionaires to make money on the back of their links to him. It's just the sort of thing that we rightly criticise Russia about.

Effectively any shackles that were on Trump during his first Presidency have completely gone.
[Post edited 21 Jan 11:39]

The reasoning of leaving the WHO is that it has been overly influenced by the Chinese and America is providing a lot of funding. It has to be in the interest of a country to be part of an international organization.
Think about whether you agree with the decision or not, but at least consider that reasoning.

The whole national security’issue is just a misnomer to make it a political.

However, have no sympathy- I mean TikTok could just comply with the Data Protection Laws that everyone else had to abide by. Another Chinese company that breaks the laws and then plays victim. They’ve been found guilty in a number of countries, including the EU and there are further claims of breaches filed against them now.

energy spent listing, and vehemently agreeing about, the ways in which trump is a very bad thing is also wasted. more useful would be to consider why a very large number of blue collar voters backed trump and why they decided that the democrats in washington were elitist, corrupt, out of touch and didn't care about the things that mattered to working class americans. america is currently giving us in the uk an opportunity to avoid having farage as pm - but only if we learn their lessons. or we could decide instead to just slag off trump, call him a fascist, and despise the people who voted for him.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I admire your optimism about people realising he's failed (when looking back in 2028). They don't seem to have realised that about his first time in the White House. They saw the sh*t show take place and 4 years after he was booted out, said 'I'd like some more of that, please!'.

agree on the economic effects, but he will probably be able to remould the american legal system (and maybe the constitution) towards dictatorship, he started in the first term and has much more power now.

i actually see more danger of an oligarchy (or more of one!) than a dictatorship, he's already begun taking off the guardrails for that

There’s been lots of posters saying how happy they are that there’s a cease fire.

We're going to have to wait 4 years to know for sure, but I think you are going to be proven to be a bit hysterical. Trump will not try to continue in office after his term in office. He will continue to have a strong influence on the party and probably even the next President, but he wouldn't be able to stay if he tried, and he surely wouldn't even want to. It is much easier to be the man in the background pulling the strings.

It's the same situation in Germany. The right are not addressing the very real concerns that the public have and have been ignored for too long. The centrist parties should be appealing to the centre right and peeling away support for far right candidates. Instead the Conservatives went to the left and didn't address basic concerns.

Hardly hysterical. Actually it’s the opposite. I just think he will die within four years. He’s doesn’t look well to me.

I believe he will be gone quicker than people think and his impact less than he’d like. A lot depends on whether the Democrats get their act together of course.

The reasoning of leaving the WHO is that it has been overly influenced by the Chinese and America is providing a lot of funding. It has to be in the interest of a country to be part of an international organization.
Think about whether you agree with the decision or not, but at least consider that reasoning.

Not convinced at all by that reasoning, not least because the US provides less funding than Germany and about the same as the UK.

As of January 2025, the WHO has 194 member states: all member states of the United Nations except for Liechtenstein (192 countries), plus the Cook Islands and Niue. And surely the aims etc of the WHO set out below (from Wikipedia) are in the interests of all countries and mankind?

"The WHO's purpose is to achieve the highest possible level of health for all the world's people, defining health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."[5] The main functions of the World Health Organization include promoting the control of epidemic and endemic diseases; providing and improving the teaching and training in public health, the medical treatment of disease, and related matters; and promoting the establishment of international standards for biological products.

The WHO's official mandate is to promote health and safety while helping the vulnerable worldwide. It provides technical assistance to countries, sets international health standards, collects data on global health issues, and serves as a forum for scientific or policy discussions related to health.

The WHO has played a leading role in several public health achievements, most notably the eradication of smallpox, the near-eradication of polio, and the development of an Ebola vaccine. Its current priorities include communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola, malaria and tuberculosis; non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and cancer; healthy diet, nutrition, and food security; occupational health; and substance abuse. The agency advocates for universal health care coverage, engagement with the monitoring of public health risks, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and promoting health and well-being generally."."

Ultimately, my view is that the Trump decision in relation the WHO is a consequence of MAGA scepticism about Covid and the vaccines, and will go down very well with the base. And the fact that it may play into the hegemonic struggle between the US and China is a bonus from an America First point of view.

Maybe he won't try, maybe he will. But at the very least his party will continue to gerrymander to sew up the next election, for example make it harder and harder for people in urban areas (which skew Democrat) to vote, stuff election bodies with their acolytes etc. It'll be a shoo in for Vance (substitute in whoever is the chosen one from the Republicans in 2028).

In my view, the US ban in relation to Tik Tok is part of the hegemonic struggle between the US and China, although Trump has changed his mind because it emerged during the campaign that he was popular on it.

As it is, I am glad that Darren Jones reiterated a point I made on here a few weeks ago about people dancing in Barnsley on TIk Tok not being a national security threat.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/tiktok-ban-trump-china-uk-b268233

Finally, closing down Tik Tok or, as Trump suggested a couple of days ago, ensuring a US stake, would certainly appear to suit the tech bros now on board with him.

I started a thread on here saying the proposed ceasefire was good news, bur I said that things were still very uncertain, and I am not sure that the people in Gaza and the families of the remaining hostages are quite at the elation stage.
