The flip side of the pardoning is that a lot of prosecutions are political and if you look at the details of what people actually did, many of the prosecutions and sentences were disproportionate. The one thing that gives me a bit of hope for the future is that I don't think the Democrats' problems were structural - the factors that sealed their defeat are unique to the electoral cycle just gone. They fell victim to the trend of incumbent parties being punished in virtually every country since the start of the Ukraine war and massively shot themselves in the foot with the inability to find a successor for Biden until it was too late. The flipside to this is that on paper it shouldn't be too tricky for Trump to grow the economy, but given his mad tariff plans, that is extremely unlikely. |  |
