Looks like the Atlanta Utd deal is being accepted at £16m + top ups. Makes me wonder why we are not jumping on this as surely the more attractive option. Edmundson could go the other way as a sweetener and make our outlay less.

I know we have heard we have moved on to other targets, but these targets are not materialising.

11 goals this season in addition to the 16 last year. Plays in a similar formation and role.

Would seem so wouldn't it. Unusual that our interest is that short term. We often stay in the hunt for someone longer than one window

I had read that Atlanta had moved their focus on to Eduoard at Palace - but of course that might have been to push Boro to move

It was a deal that made more sense in the summer when we were probably still weighing up whether Delap would be our number 9 or play as a wide forward but now I'm less sure.

He's 26 so in his prime years and he's done well at Championship level but without fully tearing it up. In our system and knowing what's required of our number 9 I'm not convinced he's a big upgrade on the younger Hirst. He offers different attributes for sure but that's a decent chunk of money for a player with limited resale value and no Prem experience to be coming in and being second or third choice behind Delap and possibly Hirst too.

Probably in the summer he thought if he joined us he had a good chance of starting a lot of games. But now he's seen the form of Delap he knows he'll spend 95+% starting on the bench and therefore more than happy to go to Atlanta and thus his agent isn't dinging us to sign him.

Good point. Remember thinking at the time that Delap seemed more of a right sided player for how he was being utilized at Hull.

Not many tearing it up in the Championship. ELL is third behind Maja and Sainz

Might suggest he was a bit of a back up choice to Broja when that fell through late in the window and with more time to assess KMc doesn't think he is what we need for the investment.

What it may also indicate despite all the reported Chelsea/Spurs interest is that Delap is going nowhere as most of us predict.

Now I've said that could be wrong and Delap goes and Awonyi or Ferguson signs permanently!

Can you explain why we are the more attractive option than the team currently 3rd in Serie A?

They are 4 points ahead of 4th and heading for Champions League football at the moment.

Atlanta (Georgia, USA) instead of Atalanta.

Indeed - I totally misread that probably because it's such a strange one. Just one of many failings of the human brain.

If the Atalanta interest was known to us, it would have been pointless wasting energy on him even if we wanted him. There’s no chance we’re competing with guaranteed Champions League football.

I've seen this mentioned a lot, but do we actually know that Delap was signed to play as a right sided forward? I get that McKenna likes versatility but he also likes a very specific type of striker so the suggestion that we were "weighing up" where to play him after forking out a significant chunk of money, doesn't feel very McKenna-esque

McKenna is always very clear that he's more interested in attributes than in positions. Other players have played different roles for us. The injury to Hirst forced our hand somewhat, I'm not sure when we signed Delap that the plan was to straight away use him as our starting number 9 and for him to play more or less every game in that role.

Hence why we were trying so hard to spend big on broja as well as delap.

Indeed. Not sure we'd have been looking at that Broja deal if we thought Delap was a nailed on starter every week as a 9. He wouldn't have been coming here to be a bench warmer. Delap's performances mean our requirements have changed a bit since August. We still need another number 9 but probably not someone to come in and be first choice.
