Absolute tourist trap though, only scousers I heard all day were the stewards. I’ve not experienced such a lack of atmosphere since I nearly drowned in Queenstown years ago. Made the Etihad feel like Galatasaray. Not since Wetherspoons built an empire has a beautiful building been so full of cheap tat and lost souls.
Salah is absolute class and I guess it’s a privilege to see him at work scoring like that, but today was a hiding to nothing. Morsy looked like he was a touch too many off the level unfortunately. No shame when these lot are being handed the title and can produce stuff at a canter like that. Slot is a very good manager.
Our goal was obviously a moment. Loved how Enciso demanded the ball off Phillips and hit a scud missile into the box. We are going to hurt teams with him and philogene adding to what we’ve got. People filming and joining in with their show tune dirge were astounding. In exactly the opposite way to the rest of the away end. Absolute brilliant gallows humour, defiance and limbs.
Think we might not see Burns again. He went down in front of us and it sounded worse than it looked. All about the oxygen now.

Thanks for that - we’re trying to go away for more weekends away this year and Carlisle is one of those places I’d never think of going to. Will put it on the list.
Best way to do that is via the Settle to Carlisle train route, boarding at Setlle or Skipton :)

Well I suppose for anyone who was too small-minded to explore any of its amazing variety of music, festivals, art, theatre, shops, pubs, incredibly beautiful countryside on the doorstep; or to talk to any of its lovely, warm hearted people, it might superficially appear like it did to you.
Maybe it was all my fault. Couldn’t get past the awful weather, yobby drunk locals and drab architecture myself. Was v pleased to transfer out of south Yorks and finish up studying in Spain, Paris and London

Small but quite attractive. Cathedral roof is astonishingly beautiful, and the pipes of its organ on display as you enter and exit are just astonishing.
I went when I was 12 and particularly remember the castle.
Wikipedia describes it thus.
Carlisle has a compact historic centre with a castle, cathedral and semi-intact city walls, as well as other medieval buildings including the Guildhall and Tithe Barn. The Citadel towers, which until 2016 also served as offices for Cumbria County Council, were designed by Thomas Telford, with the eastern tower incorporating part of the 16th-century building. The first Citadel building was a Tudor fortification replacing the medieval Englishgate, designed by the Moravian military engineer Stefan von Haschenperg in 1541.

As an aside, the tourist fan that got thrown out for daring to stand up and attempt to rile us was a genuine high point of the day which resulted in me having no idea they hit the post.

Northern. Dark. Dank. Depressing. Full of chains on the high street. Wetherspoons. Smells of despair and urine
This is completely untrue
I worked in Carlisle a lot a few years ago and it had a thriving independent scene. It's also now pitched as the gateway to the lakes and Hadrian's Wall so has had a bit of tourist resurgence
Some areas never recovered from the floods in 2015 but on the whole it's probably got a lot more going for it than other cities/towns of similar populations

I think the cathedral looks like it is made out of soft clay, like it'll collapse in the rain.

Why is he flogging Delap? 76 minutes chwrging around on his own and much of the second half spent 20 yards outside OUR area!!!! Booked on 75, by my reckoning 1 off a two game ban which will come during more potentially winnable games. Seemed crazy to me. They are a fine team, possibly tge best club side in the world right now so getting beaten is no disgrace. But, were we still in L1 and came here in the FACup 3rd round, I'm pretty sure we would not have stood off them, we'd have ruffled a few feathers and been more in their face. Far too passive and that frustrates me.
Brilliant last few lines. Completely agree. At half time I said the exact same thing RE if we’d come as a L1/Champ team.

It’s exactly what the elite want it to be.
Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Next time you’re in Sheffield give me a nudge
Definitely on a wind up.
I haven’t been to Sheffield for years, but I had some fine times there visiting a friend who was at Uni there. There was a cracking but really basic curry place. Very basic - benches and saw dust on the floor. Brutally hot curries as well - it was more torture chamber than restaurant, but great. Some nice pubs as well.

I’m sure he’s on a wind up and as for Sheffield Swanners , I’ve been here 10+ now and nothing has changed in terms lf the curry houses and bars. They’re trying to invest in the city centre to rejuvenate the area which is all good. Meadowhall killed the centre years ago but hopefully better times are on the way and they need to be with the threat of Uni students considering Sheffield as a non-viable option. When you look at the likes of Leeds and Nottingham that can offer the “yoof “ so much more.
Proper people with a ton of personality and salt of the earth (apart from those Wednesday supporters obviously )
My other half is from Rotherham but I don’t hold that against her and we live in a very nice part of Sheffield but I do miss my home city of Nottingham.
There’s a lot to be said about the North ….good and bad

It’s really just a personal opinion. I have not enjoyed any northern town that I have ever visited! English towns and cities as an average are pretty poor compared to European equivalents. In the north they seem even worse. Even nice cities like Cambridge, Bristol etc. are beset with chains, Wetherspoons, lack of good restaurants etc. in the north it’s similar, but the weather is even worse. When I did live in a northern city for 2 years, it was actually the weather that really did it for me. It’s bad enough here in the Home Counties!! I probably just need to be another 1000 miles south… Provence would do nicely!

Feel free to emigrate
Definitely on the to do list! Unfortunately it’s a little harder to do these days since 2016. Tbf I’ve never lived in an English city other than London, and the two years “up north”. I have busted quite a few though. Generally disappointing!!

Every street I walked down looked worse than the shttest parts of Ipswich. I can only judge on what I saw.
Few of the people, actually scousers, were really nice tho
That’s sad to hear. I never really go into Ipswich, either get the train to the match or park Ila’s heat as u can to the ground. I actually had a stop off there and tube to kill a few months ago, and was shocked by the town centre. It made me realise why some people who live in areas that have been beset with high immigration and poverty home the views they do. Prior to that, I’d thought it was hysterical nonsense. Perhaps I just saw it in a bad day, but having come from central London on a Thursday to Ipswich (and on an England Euros fixture day) I couldn’t believe how dead it was.

There's a a reason for that. Ipswich is a lot nicer than people living there realise. I think you end up seeing the worse in a place after a while, but it's really not bad at all. It's miles ahead of places around here - Swansea, Llanelli, Merthyr are all far worse. Genuinely, I think Chantry is nicer than many parts of Swansea, and I only ever see Chantry getting a bad rap. Many towns and Cities away from the SE are in a right state. Ipswich and the wider area is pretty well off in comparison.
