Anfield is a class stadium in a decent little city 18:21 - Jan 25 with 13388 viewsMullet

Absolute tourist trap though, only scousers I heard all day were the stewards. I’ve not experienced such a lack of atmosphere since I nearly drowned in Queenstown years ago. Made the Etihad feel like Galatasaray. Not since Wetherspoons built an empire has a beautiful building been so full of cheap tat and lost souls.

Salah is absolute class and I guess it’s a privilege to see him at work scoring like that, but today was a hiding to nothing. Morsy looked like he was a touch too many off the level unfortunately. No shame when these lot are being handed the title and can produce stuff at a canter like that. Slot is a very good manager.

Our goal was obviously a moment. Loved how Enciso demanded the ball off Phillips and hit a scud missile into the box. We are going to hurt teams with him and philogene adding to what we’ve got. People filming and joining in with their show tune dirge were astounding. In exactly the opposite way to the rest of the away end. Absolute brilliant gallows humour, defiance and limbs.

Think we might not see Burns again. He went down in front of us and it sounded worse than it looked. All about the oxygen now.

It’s really just a personal opinion. I have not enjoyed any northern town that I have ever visited! English towns and cities as an average are pretty poor compared to European equivalents. In the north they seem even worse. Even nice cities like Cambridge, Bristol etc. are beset with chains, Wetherspoons, lack of good restaurants etc. in the north it’s similar, but the weather is even worse. When I did live in a northern city for 2 years, it was actually the weather that really did it for me. It’s bad enough here in the Home Counties!! I probably just need to be another 1000 miles south… Provence would do nicely!

You keep using wetherspoons as a marker of a rubbish city but according to this the places with the biggest concentrations of 'spoons are mostly southern

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/town-britain-highest-concentration-wethers

The north is ace. I live in York but regularly spend time in Leeds/Sheffield/Newcastle for gigs, exhibitions and events. These places definitely have more going for them than most southern towns and cities.

If all you care about is being 2 degrees warmer, then the north definitely isn't for you. But if you actually care about arts, culture, music, thriving independent scenes, local identities and fab local food and drink etc, then I'd really say you need to spend less time visiting the wetherspoons in each of these places you slate and more time exploring with your eyes open

What was Trent like, Mullet? He was my highlight at Portman Road. Just a remarkable footballer to watch in the flesh.

He spent the first half trying too hard and getting really angsty with everyone, relaxed a bit second half and obviously put a superb cross in for the fourth goal.

Each to their own I guess! Some people need to like living in the north! I’ve been to York, some years ago. I remember it was pretty, but again beset by chain shops and a lack of vibrancy. I also remember the typical English provincial city curse of very drunk people causing general nuisance.

I’d also have to dispute the claim that food is good! Generally, I found I have found it a big disappointment when visiting northern towns and cities. Of course, there are some great places, but across the board I’d say the average level is not very good!

It's actually a very nice building, in a great location, overlooking a lovely sandy beach.

And I can't remember any smells, although maybe the other punters could smell me!

That’s sad to hear. I never really go into Ipswich, either get the train to the match or park Ila’s heat as u can to the ground. I actually had a stop off there and tube to kill a few months ago, and was shocked by the town centre. It made me realise why some people who live in areas that have been beset with high immigration and poverty home the views they do. Prior to that, I’d thought it was hysterical nonsense. Perhaps I just saw it in a bad day, but having come from central London on a Thursday to Ipswich (and on an England Euros fixture day) I couldn’t believe how dead it was.

Ipswich town centre is only worth visiting on match days.

Every other day of the year it’s as you describe.

I know this is some top quality trolling but after living in Liverpool for 3yrs I feel compelled to at least offer my opinion.

For food there's Bold Street which has Korean, Asian fusion, Greek, Mexican and American options (all of which are independent as far as I know) as well as Rudy's pizza which started in Manchester and is good enough for my Italian friends.

If you want to ignore that entire street then you have street food vendor buildings all of which are local in 3 (three) separate locations, that I know of, around the city. This is before even thinking about Chinatown which has the largest gate outside of China, there is a large Asian contingent in the city which addresses the wild claims of lack of diversity in Liverpool.

I think it's pure stubbornness and willful ignorance which is stopping you from enjoying what is a fantastic place, which is a shame. Liverpool the same as Ipswich has its problems and its underdeveloped areas but you would feel just as frustrated with this thread as I do if I visited Ipswich, only went to Chantry, visited a rubbish chippy and a flat roof pub then wrote it off for being rundown.

Sadly I haven't been able to visit Liverpool for years (the last occasion was when I watched Marcus Stewart dance the ball into their net at Anfield!), but lived there for a month in the 1980s & have to say the best thing about it for me was the incredible, generous, warm-hearted people with their great sense of humour.

I walked along Bold Street on Saturday on my way from Liverpool Central to the Blackburne Arms in the Georgian Quarter and was suitably impressed by the various food and other outlets, all of which seemed to be independent.

There are a load of independent food places all over the country , North and South obviously and no more noticeable than in the North at times because of regeneration of certain areas due to certain collapse of industries over the years - Sheffield - Steel , Nottingham - Lace etc

for its size, liverpool punches far above its weight for its town centre, really good food options, shops and venues.

some great little record shops particularly

For those criticising our fans at Anfield (of which I was one), this is Stuart Watson's take.

"Jacob Greaves steamed onto it to head home a consolation goal in front of an away end that had often out sung a record Anfield crowd."

Matches my experience this time round, I was up for a couple of days, went to several pubs recommended by my uncle who used to live there, and experienced an abundance of genuine friendliness from locals, to a level I’ve rarely experienced. We had loads of good chats will all sorts, plenty of good natured banter, made the weekend for our group.

You've not met my in-laws!

Seriously though, Liverpool is a much-maligned place by people who have either not visited it or know very little of it.

The contrast from the 60s and 70s, with the Beatles and Liverpool FC conquering the world, couldn't be greater.

Admittedly, it suffered during the 80s but no more than many northern towns and cities. Sadly, its reputation seems to me to arise from stereotypes derived from things like Harry Enfield, the Boys from the Blackstuff and the Militant Tendency.

As an aside, a programme I saw a few years ago contrasting Manchester (with its cotton mills) and Liverpool (with its docks), explained the extrovert nature of Scousers as derived from casual labour on the docks where shrinking violets wouldn't have got the jobs.
