I remember the moment a few years ago when my fogged brain made me think we'd played an absolute blinder, until I realised it was Oli Hawkins we'd signed. Maybe Lambert had made the same mistake.

Some Spoonerisms are great.

I do like Wallie Otkins.

Looks unlikely with Duran heading for Saudi.

Why leave it so late in the window? Unless it's just to try and show Arsenal fans they tried with no intention of actually signing him...

Truly impaired.

Shame to see Duran retire at 21, but that's one hell of a pension.

I guess it shows he's not that driven by football. Each to their own.

I heard on some talk show (probably talksport), some west ham fan saying the owners just make a bid on a player to appease the fans, but its not a serious bid as its too low.

Seems like Arsenal are doing that, but if they come back with £90-100m Villa might consider it.

I agree it's a big shame but you can understand him going there.

I wonder if he might be young enough to come back after and still be a top player but it looks like a poor footballing move.

I can’t understand him going there. He could get more money than he could ever spend, be adored, play against the best teams at the top level in packed out stadia in some of the biggest occasions you could ever experience in club football.

Or go to Saudi.

Would he get that amount of money now staying here? Yes, if his career progresses he probably will but plenty of young promising players haven't done (think Macheda, etc). This guarantees that income now regardless and he is young enough that he could possibly still make it after (depending on length of contract).

If the career matters more to him than the money he won't go but I can understand why he would go.

He could get £100k+ a week here. Possibly a lot more.

Enough to scrape by on. But not compared to Saudi.

Watkins is never worth that and if Arsenal pay that then they've lost the plot. Good player, just turned 29. I get that's probably what he's worth to Villa at this moment in time end of the window etc.

think for a purist i understand the position of why would he go there at that age.

But looking at it coldly, he could get injured tomorrow and his career finished, so taking that offer for him and his family makes sense. Not sure on his upbringing but some young south Americans have grown up in desperately poor conditions, so for them to be able to provide for their family is probably very important to them.

Not that being a premier league strike you should be short of money.

Oh totally agree, and £60m in the summer when there is time to get a replacement, possibly.

But now with days left of the transfer window.....Watkins could potentially be the difference between champinos league football again or not.

yeah, if they weren't losing the other striker then you could understand them selling given a good price and his age.

Honestly, this just shows how lucky we are as both Villa, Arsenal and Duran have completed ballsed this up.

Villa - in PSR trouble, could have shifted a 29 year old striker for £60m plus.
Makes sense for them to then put Duran as the main man and find a suitable youngster to back up.

Arsenal - could sign the striker they need to possibly put them over and compete on all fronts. Negotiate the deal early in the window, get it done.

Duran - Becomes the main man, boosts his price further and goes on to play at the top top top level of world football.

Instead, they all take the easy way out. Football no longer has any logic to it.
