We threw away our super power at the start of the season. 16:55 - Feb 1 with 2953 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

Decided pretty much all of the promotion team were no good before a ball was kicked.

Team spirit and understanding of how we play was lost.

Nothing to do with playing in the hardest and best league in the world then?

It was clear the team needed strengthening.

We are a point off safety.

Yes, today is disappointing but it isn't over yet.

unfortunately as we've seen the step up is too big, we needed to bring in a full 11. Look what at Sheff Utd last season, Ashton and co went for it and it hasn't worked out. We'd be worse off if we hadn't recruited.

Of course, but I think there has been too much tinkering.

It’s nothing to do with playing in the hardest league. Poor signings. Only Cajuste and Delap have improved us. We were outplayed on occasions in the Championship (e.g. Southampton and Leicester at home), but spirit dragged us through. Yes, we were right to try and sign better players during the summer, but they should have gradually been introduced to the existing team. The recruitment team also haven’t done well so far in this window. Enciso looks good, but Philogene looks a bit of a sporadic talent. Goalkeeper was a must but…

You think we'd have more points without O'Shea, Cajuste, Delap, Smodz, Phillips, Greaves, Johnson, Clarke?

If we needed a new 11, it was a different 11 than the ones we've brought in.

I'd be fascinated to know how many points the promotion side would have got. At the moment, our points per game is worse than Luton managed over the course of last season. McKenna has had way more money to spend, and way more fans cheering the team on.

Apart from Delap and Cajuste, I doubt we’d have many less points on 17:11 - Feb 1 with 2007 viewsPacittiJohn

with last season’s squad. Plus, they’ve spent a lot of cash, and we seem to have a lot of right sided defenders and attackers who don’t contribute much behind Delap. A reliable goalkeeper, and two holding midfielders would have been good instead.

Wrong conclusion IMO but we haven't improved as much as we needed to. Last season Leicester and Southampton dominated us for large parts but we managed to survive. This season we've probably reversed that; they survived and returned the favour. Had we not improved significantly, I expect we would have witnessed Leeds-like drubbings most weekends.

We've also made a probably fatal error in GK recruitment, leading to soft goals conceded all the time. A quality keeper could have masked some of our frailties but instead they've been exacerbated.

Agree re the GK, Ramsdale has probably contributed to the majority of Saints' points. Same for Pickford, who is keeping Everton up most matches. Our record GK signing on contrary has cost us probably as much points as we have so far this season.

You can see how much of a step up it is by looking at someone like Davis. Looked a class above in the Championship but is shadow of that player in the Prem. Morsy just looks sluggish as well

It's ridiculous to think that championship players and team spirit is enough to keep you in this league!

You are right, it isn't over. But I have resigned myself to the likelihood of relegation.

I do feel that we changed too much too soon. I think many of these players will come good. But we mis the intuitive link up play and understanding of the system. Dropping Woolfenden when he was playing well stands out.

Yep, like Burnley and Sheff Utd and Luton, and Soton and Leicester.

Think it might also be something to do with the fact that this season we’re in a league full of teams better than us.

Super powers only take to so far - as so many teams that get promo into the prem find out

And how many minutes have you seen Philogene to come to that conclusion?

I wouldn’t mind a bet that you’re not and never have managed a football team!

We’ll never know will we! You makes your choice and takes your chance - live and die by decisions. KM and MA made a choice of recruitment policy - so far it hasn’t really worked. But if they hadn’t recruited and we’d been in the same position they’d have been criticised for not getting in more players.

Sorry but it is, if we can't beat them we are not beating anybody for the rest of the season. We need to think about our squad balance too many forward type players who haven't delivered and nothing in midfield other than one over paid players whose done very little and one can never last 90 mins. Our recruitment strategy is very odd to say the least when you look at left attack and right backs. I posted a few games back it's all looking very Lambertesque, we are going down without a whimper.

I said the same in July, & said also that similarities with our previous relegationfrom the Prem worried me.

However even I could see we needed to strengthen in every dept., & don't see how we could have *gradually* introduced new players to the squad given there are only two transfer windows, & that we also had a lot of injuries disrupting selections.

On the same logic we are not winning any other points all season ... and yet we have 16.
