It's panicking because he doesn't fit the criteria McKenna wants from his keeper.

He's not good with the ball at his feet (arguably worse than Muric). Good shot-stopper admittedly, but the deal just doesn't sit right with me. I'd love to be proven wrong, but his raw attributes just don't add up as a worthwhile recruit.

He may be a steadier pair of hands, but we could've loaned someone similar and kept our powder dry for another keeper that better fits our brief in the summer.

Where are we going to loan a prem-standard goalkeeper from who isn't already playing in the prem?

If there's a keeper out there who is that good why would his team loan him to us?!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Plus we'd have to sign him from abroad, as we already have two English league loans in the squad.

No, no, no. Let's not panic buy now.

He's no better than Walton. Very good shot stopper but another who's indecisive with the ball at his feet.

I’m guessing we didn’t have many options to choose from and given Walton appears to be crocked for some time, Muric is in terrible form and Slicker is an unknown quantity to throw into a PL relegation fight what else could we do ?

If it helps keep us up £2million is loose change, if not we have a decent Championship keeper who will replace Muric, he is surely finished here now.

Us sign a third striker?

Let's not go overboard.

it'd be a 2nd striker if delap or hirst had an injury!

What a miss Michael Cooper was! Palmer has hovered around the top 6/10 of Championship keepers for the past three seasons so is hopefully an upgrade on what we have now. We needed to do something.

Given Walton is out for a while - seems logical to bring in another Keeper.

Yes, this is the way that it can be sold to Muric, to keep his morale up (and thereby possibly even his value). On paper, he is here to compete for places. But surely given that a decision has been made to bite the bullet and bring a keeper in, there is more than half an eye on him playing in the league?

I certainly think we need to get behind Palmer, rather than continuing to grumble about past decisions (Hladky, Muric, etc).

I do feel a little sorry for Slicker, now not even looking likely to get a cup game at a time when our expensive keeper is shot, and our steady eddie is injured (and possibly not even that steady). But the Club's interests are very obviously paramount.

But he's a decent Champ keeper that isn't comfortable playing out from the back. It's the equivalent of us signing Bart Bialkowski. Tremendous shot-stopper who looked great in a structured, direct side, but would've been shown up big style playing in our current system.

True. I'm fine with the Palmer signing but we do need a other CM and striker through the door.

more to do with walton's long-term injury.

if delap or hirst had got a similar injury, we'd be buying a striker

I think many fans are suggesting we should be buying a striker anyway in the event that Hirst or Delap do get injured.

Right now, we have a keeper who can't even make saves though.

Our other option is now out for around 2 months.

I would suggest that getting a keeper in that can stop a shot or two, is a must. Anything over and above that right now - would be a bonus.

Had Walton not got injured, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

It's too late in the day to do much else and doing 'nothing' would be a huge risk.

it's more the equivalent of us signing a better christian walton (to replace an injured christian walton).

we'll take a loss on it, but needs must; if muric picks up an injury, we're relying on slicker to carry us entirely

I think whether it being a panic buy is a bit of a moot point. Muric as the only serious keeper is untenable and that was only confirmed with his performance at the weekend. We just have to get someone in and getting a very solid Championship keeper is the best we could probably hope for although I assume when Walton's absence was confirmed Ashton and others were out looking.

It being deadline day suggests panic but I think it's more a case of realism or necessity and you'd imagine has been in the pipeline for a few days at least. Maybe longer, we don't know.

agreed, interesting stat from blue monday about the very low number of saves compared with shots on target in the last 4 league games (appreciate that's mostly walton)

Cooper is the keeper I wanted Town to buy, Palmer looks to be a solid Championship keeper but at just 28 years old surely he can improve and at 2 million he's a good investment IMO.

He defo has one thing over Muric and that's his decision making, actually no it's two things, he has confidence too which must be even higher now that a Prem Club thinks he's good enough..

I guess the bottom line is something needed to be done because our current first choice keeper is killing us!

Plus maybe we’ll see Townsend more - Palmer and Townsend should have a good relationship at WBA playing close to 100 games together

Agree he isn't great with his feet (and a West Brom pal concurs with that view) but I think he is a better shot stopper than Walton. I don't think he would have let the first Soton goal go through his fingers like a slippery sausage either.

I questioned Muric's signing in the summer, but was told he was brilliant with the ball at this feet. In the games i'd seen both for Burnley and here, he appears to have lost that ability.

Right now, I guess just keeping the ball out of the net is the basics and Palmer is one of the best at doing that.

We've got to be happy that we're improving our starting XI for somewhere between £2m and £5m.

One thing I am a little puzzled by is that according to this BBC sports article, Palmer came through West Brom’s academy but has only made 104 appearances at the age of 28? Doesn’t seem like alot of experience for an almost 30 year old.

He's made 200 odd league appearances. As with most keepers, lots of loans etc all over, then first choice at his club.

Been on loan a lot. Made his league debut for West Brom on 5 October 2022 and pretty much been their number 1 since.
