Assuming Palmer goes ahead 13:41 - Feb 3 with 3285 views | GeoffSentence | Which keeper do we lose from the squad. I am not sure if Slicker takes up a squad place, I presume not, three others seems a lot of keepers for one squad.

I expect a panic signing. (n/t) on 14:10 - Feb 3 by homer_123 | Purchasing one of the Champs best keepers for circa £2m/£3m seems a reasonable piece of business and if that is the level of 'panic buying' we are at. I'm OK with it. |

Oh it's a massive panic buy.... on 14:09 - Feb 3 by portmanking | Single biggest issue? Distribution, no? I think being good with your feet should be a prerequisite if we're building from the back and baiting the press, which is what McKenna wants. Walton's been unable to do that and Muric's decision-making is comical. Without a keeper that's good with his feet, we don't get a chance to play through the thirds and the midfield will be bypassed for the rest of the season. |
Playing out is important for KM and the team but that's useless if we let in powder puff shots from 10 yards. And, again, right now, we have 10 hours in the window left. We cannot loan from England and this is not a position we were looking to fill in January, it's only Walton's injury that has caused this. So, a little leeway and pragmatism is called for. I'd much rather see a keeper in our goals that instils some confidence in our defenders and fans right now.

Yes, I never said they didn't (but I appreciate assumption is perfectly fair if you want to dig at someone on here) But not remotely to these levels. This is something else.

Oh it's a massive panic buy.... on 14:10 - Feb 3 by hype313 | I totally get Slicker needs game time elsewhere, I just think back to Richard Wright who at the same age had amassed over 100 games by Slickers current age, including being in a relegation dogfight. Slicker needs to desperately go and get games otherwise his career won't start, and we won't know what level he can get too. |
Agreed, but throwing him in now is a huge gamble. That said, the flip side is I guess, would he be worse than Muric? Either way, we need a 3rd keeper.

Oh it's a massive panic buy.... on 14:06 - Feb 3 by farkenhell | Is it not more likely that the decision to get a new keeper in was made following the realisation that Walton would be out for some considerable time, rather than a reaction to Saturday's loss? |
As is always the case, it's probably a bit of both. If it was just a replacement for Walton's injury I'm not sure they would be spending between 2M-5M. That seems an obscene amount of money for someone you view as potentially a third choice keeper long term. They know they can't depend on Aro (that's why he was dropped in the first place!) for the next 14 games and have moved to bring in a player who will start with the added bonus that he will certainly be part of the squad next year regardless of division. The issue is that.... on 14:11 - Feb 3 by Bloots | ....our entire style of play has been built around having a keeper with "good feet", this one doesn't fit that style, so we will have to change. That's all. But yeah, any port in a storm. Hooooooofffff!!!! |
At the risk of sounding like a broken record. This wasn't a position we were looking to recruit for in this window. Walton's injury means we are left with 2 keepers. One who's confidence is shot and the other untested at any level. I've never said that playing out from the back isn't important, it is, and has been under KM. Walton isn't the best in terms of that but, as fans, we seemed quite OK to dispense with Muric in favour of Walton as he was deemed more reliable, even this came at the expense of playing out from the back. Walton is now injured, so it looks like we are buying a keeper who is an upgrade on Walton - yes, he's not Messi with the ball at his feet but last I checked, he can kick a ball! I also think, right now, with the window closing and us being in a relegation battle, yes, having a keeper in our goal who can make basic saves is rather important and I'd argue more so than being able play out with aplomb.

Add to that, as I posted earlier, I don't think his metrics suggest that he's that out of line with how we play. More so than Walton, on paper anyway.

Oh it's a massive panic buy.... on 14:05 - Feb 3 by homer_123 | Is it? Really? What's the single biggest issue for us right now with keepers? We let in soft (and I mean really soft) goals. Right now, more than anything, we need a keeper in the sticks that is going to be a solid 7/8 out of 10 each game, do the basics right, give confidence to the defence and keep us in games. Yes, he may not be Messi with his feet but this is about pragmatism right now. Walton's injury has forced our hand. Without it, we wouldn't be signing another keeper. [Post edited 3 Feb 14:06]

Be funny if.... on 13:46 - Feb 3 by blueasfook | 3rd choice behind Muric and Slicker. Joking aside, it will be interesting to see if he's being brought in as Number 1. He has no premiership experience. Been playing regularly last couple of seasons for Brom in the championship though after a few seasons as a perennial loanee. Smacks of a panic buy to me but time will tell. |
West Brom fans seem to rate him?

When he's possibly cost / costing your teams status in the premier league I think its pretty reasonable.
