Maybe it is just me 02:25 - Feb 11 with 6432 views | DavoIPB | But I thought we looked very average against Coventry. Think Frank was right, nothing in it between the teams except we took our opportunities. Thought they passed the ball better, were quicker in attack and cut through our defence on more than one occasion especially first half. We seemed to rely on long balls to a lone striker and nabbing the ball from their mistakes in defence. We didn't look like a team at all and were slow ponderous and lacking in ideas for most of the game.

I tend to agree with the OP. Our passing was slow and we gave the ball away. If we played like that against premier league opposition we would have got done. In context we did well with our second team, which on paper should have been the case anyway. Very good for the scorers who all needed a confident boost and to give KM something to think about with team selection. Only negative was Sam's injury. In summary a good result, but nothing spectacular.
Maybe it is just me on 05:11 - Feb 11 with 4184 views | RIPbobby | Yeah not far off. We took our chances superbly, but the rest of our play was mostly poor. We played much better against the saints and they did a job on us. Somewhat unfortunate for us to lose that game.

It was very easy to switch over to the rugby with 15 minutes to go knowing we'd won and wasn't going to miss much.
Maybe it is just me on 07:30 - Feb 11 with 3858 views | badadski | I’ve never looked like losing and all the players looked like they had a gear of 2 extra to up too if needs be. Towards the end when we were already out of sight we could have pushed for me but decided to run the clock down, good or bad, I don’t know but it was akin to a lot of games in the premier league.

I agree with him. And since the game I reckon I’ve spoken with 5/6 people who all said the same thing. We won, without really doing much. Handy we could capitalise on their mistakes, and be clinical, but reserve team or not, we’ve got a serious amount of work on our hands to get some sort of style or identity back into our play.

Maybe it is just me on 07:48 - Feb 11 with 3773 views | trncbluearmy | You'd never think we went to a team on the fringe of the champ playoffs, in front of their biggest gate for years with a reserve team and won scoring 4 good goals, none of them were gifted, Town pressure and quickness of feet and thought created all the goals. Lampard is talking it up to his own fans, something poor managers always do. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Maybe it is just me on 08:03 - Feb 11 with 3671 views | Herbivore | We win 4-1 away in a potentially tricky cup tie against an in form Championship side and some of our fans are still nit picking. Sheesh. Let go of the negativity. We put out a side that had never lined up together before, featuring several players who have played very few minutes this season. We were never going to turn up and knock it around like 1970 Brazil. We took our chances well, won comfortably, and hardly needed to get out of second gear. What's not to like? Maybe it is just me on 08:08 - Feb 11 with 3611 views | TractorJack | Lampards comments ignore the context of the game and how goals change things massively. We were at least 2 goals ahead for the majority of the game. If we are behind or level, we play differently, I'm sure of that.
Maybe it is just me on 08:09 - Feb 11 with 3596 views | Wickets | Thought we looked disjointed for about 15 minutes, hardly surprising as so many changes but after that we were for me very good always pretty comfortable.

They were somewhat gifted, but our press was very effective and we were clinical.

Correct First, faster and stronger, pen well taken Second, cracking individual skill Third, watch our front three and the pressure put on the cov players and then stronger in midfield to pick the ball up, then a good series of passes and a well taken goal Fourth, pressure in midfield lead to cov player losing ball then well taken goal

...and it was our 'second eleven' and we coasted most of the game.

Third - ball literally passed to our player, or have I made that up?

I thought Hirst was in his own half for the pass for the one that was given as offside too. "Long ball" could also be seen as great distribution from the keeper. Davis instead of Townsend would have had a field day. There was only a very short spell where they equalised that Coventry looked at all like giving us a real problem and we responded to that by immediately seizing control of the game again. I was a little surprised to see they shaded possession because they never really threatened with it. Possession without threat really isn't dominance. There was really only one team in the match for all but a 2 minute spell. That said, I didn't think we ever controlled the midfield battle. That was very even throughout.

No credit for our pressing there or for the two quick passes that followed, giving Clarke the tap in?

Maybe it is just me on 08:49 - Feb 11 with 3267 views | Dubtractor | I thought we played OK, but not amazing, though that's all I'd expect from a completely changed 11. What we did very well was an aggressive press in the first half, forcing errors from Coventry that we capitalised on. Second half we coasted a bit, but that's all we needed to do.

I was directly behind the goal and I've not seen a better TV angle that shows Clarke's v slight feint/dummy that puts the keeper on his arse before the tap-in. There's a player there..

The first time pass into him was excellent. JC seemed to have all the time in the world to finish it, that’s partly him making that happen, and championship defenders not being elite level. So yeah, some praise. Also they did hand us the ball. So whatever really. A win is a win

The scoreline definitely…. on 08:52 - Feb 11 with 3231 views | Bloots | ….flattered us. I thought we were pretty poor across most areas of the pitch in reality, notably in midfield where they had control and were retaining and using the ball far better than we were. I suspect that if Cov had fielded their full strength team against our second 11 we’d have lost, but it is what it is and we take the win and move on.

Interesting take. We should have had another unless Hirst was offside (I haven't seen it shown anywhere to tell). If we had needed to, we could have brought on Delap and Broadhead earlier and used Morsy and Cajuste. We won 4-1 with our second string. Imagine what it would have been with the first choice 11. Not sure where you get the idea that Coventry played their second string. They made 4 changes from their league match against Leeds and all of those were on the bench.
