But I thought we looked very average against Coventry. Think Frank was right, nothing in it between the teams except we took our opportunities. Thought they passed the ball better, were quicker in attack and cut through our defence on more than one occasion especially first half.

We seemed to rely on long balls to a lone striker and nabbing the ball from their mistakes in defence. We didn't look like a team at all and were slow ponderous and lacking in ideas for most of the game.

We won 4-1 with 11 changes.

We were 3-1 up at half time, we didn't need to dominate the ball or play like prime Barcelona just needed to do enough to hold the lead and play on the counter when we won it back which led to one of our goals.

Seems to be any excuse for negativity on this board the last few months. So confusing.

Interesting take. We should have had another unless Hirst was offside (I haven't seen it shown anywhere to tell). If we had needed to, we could have brought on Delap and Broadhead earlier and used Morsy and Cajuste.

We won 4-1 with our second string. Imagine what it would have been with the first choice 11. Not sure where you get the idea that Coventry played their second string. They made 4 changes from their league match against Leeds and all of those were on the bench.

….their “second string”.

Interesting take.

That long ball tactic was very effective, due to the accurate delivery.

How you see, and comment, on a game depends on your mindset.

KMc made comments, post match, which to a certain extent back up the OP. Difference is KMc always looks for the positives while too many Town fans look for something negative to say.

We could have done better in the second half, we could have made fewer mistakes and look for more goals but at the end of the day it was a good 4-1 away win against a competitive side in with a chance of making the play offs.

The positives far outweighed the short comings.

I thought it was an interesting performance.

I didn't feel we were watching a previous KM side, but one finding new ways of playing that could be incorporated into a KM side. I don't think i've seen us put so many balls over the top, not just hoof balls, but clearly directive balls to turn the defenders and enable our players to then adjust their positions on the pitch and advance forward.

Suspect that had something to do with scouting previous cov match against dirty leeds, cov were undone time again by long ball over central defenders

We win 4-1 away in a potentially tricky cup tie against an in form Championship side and some of our fans are still nit picking. Sheesh. Let go of the negativity. We put out a side that had never lined up together before, featuring several players who have played very few minutes this season. We were never going to turn up and knock it around like 1970 Brazil. We took our chances well, won comfortably, and hardly needed to get out of second gear. What's not to like?
[Post edited 11 Feb 8:07]

Well, quite. There wasn't a lot of obvious confidence on here that we would win the game let alone as comfortably as we did.

As I posted at half-time, we were comfortable without having done loads. That's definitely to be enjoyed and really shows the difference between the divisions.

Delap would benefit from it, too. Could be a key to unlocking the midfield blockage. Not every time, but as part of the toolset.

We're all different and I guess we're in glass half full|empty territory. I find it confusing too how some seem to want to look for negatives all the time, especially given the path we have and still are travelling from League One.

It does seem to be the same people who have higher expectations or less tolerance for us not being at 95% plus every game. It sometimes pisses me off and drives me from the forum, but we're all Town fans and we all react differently I guess - we've just got to remember that players and teams are not robots; performances vary and external noises can impact the team.

Other than a spell just after they scored I thought we were very comfortable, even if in the second half we gave the ball away a lot unnecessarily when we should have had more promising breaks.

Aside from a couple of early corners, including the one they scored from, I didn't think we ever looked in much trouble. Virtually everything Palmer had to deal with were shots from distance which gave him little trouble.

Not an outstanding performance but never thought we looked in any danger and could probably have upped it if we'd needed to but we still had the game won by half-time.

Of course. And frustration I think is fine. I can fully understand why after we concede a last minute goal to Southampton people will be frustrated and annoyed. Emotion needs to stay in football or what is the point.

But we win a game 4-1 and people are still negative. Maybe my expectations were completely different to them but I do struggle to understand what people thought was going to happen this season in the league.

Yeah. We kept giving the ball away. Our midfield was MIA again. But I've said it before. If we keep changing the team we're never going to get that cohesion we need. Injuries haven't helped, but we're running out of time to get a settled eleven recognised.

Whatever happens, come the end of the season we're going to need nearly at least 2 if not 3 more centre midfielders I reckon.

Mors is not getting any younger and neither is Luongo, Cajuste will only be with us if we stay up and Philips hasn't really worked out.

Yeah not far off. We took our chances superbly, but the rest of our play was mostly poor. We played much better against the saints and they did a job on us. Somewhat unfortunate for us to lose that game.

I don't think the season itself has been any different to what most thought it would be.

The frustrations some feel I believe, well from my side at least and I think many will feel similar is that we've spent a lot of money on a side that for some reason looks worse when the old guard are not in it. Now that's not specifically saying financially we should have suddenly become a forest, not at all. However, Broady for example looks to be a more dangerous player than Clarke, Philogene (Very small sample size here though) dare I say Hutchinson after signing perm too. There's still that discussion around Morsy or Phillips. Axel over Johnson, Godfrey. Burgess/Greaves, Muric/Hladky.

Some of our performances, Liverpool at home, and some of the earlier games of the season where we utilised a fair number of the old guard, and the performance looked collectively better than what we seem to have seen when KM has been able to utilise his newly found squad.

I think that's been my frustration, we kinda started out as a side looking competitive and needing that something extra to get us the 3 points, I think we dropped like 15 points from winning positions or something, to then wondering if we needed the spurs formation everygame, to then thinking actually that's not working well enough either..

I think we're just at a crossroads where there doesn't seem to be an identity to this seasons squad, so it's hard to relate to the team and it probably didn't help further v southamton when in the final minutes we were still slowly bringing the ball out, it just wasn't what we've been used to the past few seasons, esp when losing. I never felt that Sarmiento type goal was coming. Thats an interesting area for me, game v game against Southampton, we looked better this time around, yet we finished the game poorer despite at the time being in the same position, and this was a slight concern, how do you get that determination and drive to become natural to all new players.

Some very odd (negative) takes being voiced here.

We did what was needed, and pretty comfortably. Coventry broke the lines a couple of times, but nothing more than you'd expect from a half decent Championship side - and we dealt with it. I do think we're sometimes a bit exposed at set pieces, especially corners, and we need to work on that.

I also disagree that the midfield was anonymous. I've now had the chance to have another look at the game on TownTV, and there was some excellent build through midfield at times - Jaden, Philips and Broadhead look to have a partnership developing that is very promising.

Yes, there were more long balls - but it was a nice balance between building out of the back, through the midfield and at other times some well placed long balls. Noticed a few cross field ones from Philips that opened the field - very reminiscent of last season.

Second half was all about seeing the game out - which we did well, except the first 10 minutes, when we seemed a bit nervy (and Palmer did that punch whilst flattening 2 Coventry players), after which we settled.

Yes it was my friend. Clearly the point I was making is we played naff against Cov and we are deemed world beaters by most fans. Yet played fairly well against saints and everyone thought it was the end of the world. Sorry if that didn't make sense. I think that is what OP is alluding to a bit. A game is never won at half time. Anything can happen. I remember watching a Liverpool/Chelsea game years ago. Liverpool went in 3-0 at half time. Probably thought they had the game sown up. Chelsea came out a different team in the second half and ended up winning 4-3! Mental game!
