I hope Jack Clarke doesn't take yesterday to heart 05:56 - Feb 16 with 3342 viewstonybied

After the impressive display at Coventry and looking handy before the red card it was so harsh for him to be the one sacrificed for an extra defender! (not saying it was the wrong decision btw, although I thought it was at the time). He's looked a different player in the last couple of appearances, I really hope it doesn't knock his confidence again.

For me it’s the opposite and a confidence boost. Plenty of options on the bench and when Enciso got injured he was the player McKenna turned too.
Once we go down to 10 it’s always going to be an attacking midfielder sacrificed and unless you pull Hutchinson then Clarke was the only option.

I hope that's the case but being a substitute and getting subbed when not injured has got to sting a little. Especially when at that point he had arguably been the best forward that was still on the pitch.

Yep, he was another putting in a shift for the time he was on.

Made sense that KMc had to do what he did, but I’m sure he’d have put an arm round Jack and reassured him.

I though he was really grabbing his chance by the scruff of the neck yesterday. A couple of times he fought and won balls in which he would've been brushed aside quite easily a month ago.

We truly have had some bum luck this season, which has had some devastating effects for us so far. I keep hoping that the law of averages will kick in and give us the rub off the green sooner or later but it's just seems to continue most weeks!

All I could hear around me was ‘how the hell hasn’t he taken Omari off’ which i completely agreed with…
Omari then puts in a brilliant second half. So you’d like to think KM had a word to say you’re lucky it wasn’t you, now give me 45mins like I know you can.

It was the correct decision, and Clarke is an adult and a professional, he'll know exactly why (and McKenna will have told him too). You can’t play 10 men at Villa with Clarke, who can’t defend.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Omari did put in a brilliant second half in the obvious attacking sense...

...but if you watch him, he put in a brilliant 94 minutes in a closing down, pressing, harrying and tracking back sense. He's the best defensive forward we have (by some distance) and that's such a valuable part of his game against better opposition.

Yep, I agree, despite my blinkered thinking at the time. That's easy to say in hindsight though and that's why I'm a fan and McKenna is our manager!

First half, I’m sorry, and it’s a game of opinions, but he absolute bottled the tackle leading up to the red card.
Bring on the downvotes of course.

Just watched that back and I see what you mean. But that's one incident - his work rate and closing down throughout every game he plays in these days (but particularly yesterday) have been top notch, and he does win quite a lot of lunging tackles too, often in such a 'compact' way that he traps the ball and is up and away with it before the opponent even knows he's lost it.

Special mention for Luke Woolfenden a solid 7 out of 10 performance.

Mr Reliable happy for him to start against Spurs, although could easily be Godfrey.

Yeah, came straight in and started organising form the middle. Is it just me or has he got a lot more vocal and 'senior' like recently? Quality.

Right choice, but his work rate and defending has improved,
Mck would have got pelters if omari had been like he had been in the last few weeks, yesterday he was back to omari an outstanding performance,

Agree with both players re this topic.

Clarke looked more confident when he came on, and difficult for him being subbed at HT. I'm sure he understood (and did look happy at the end) but annoying for him as it looked like he was just starting to grab his opportunity.

Woolf, similar in that was a difficult situation, basically asked to come on and help the defence remain solid with the team down to 10 men. But he was very composed, put in some great tackles excellent half. I know he has a few detractors (often not football driven) but I genuinely don't remember him letting us down once this season when he has played.

Guess that’s why he had the Captain’s armband at Coventry

I imagine he got the same amount of minutes yesterday that he would have got if he’d have come on later in the game as expected. Never easy to sub a sub but there was clear reasoning behind it and I’m sure he understood the situation. It’s just good that Omari had a decent second half and got an assist to justify him being the one to stay on

Yep, he’ll be fine and it’s all part of the game. He might have been more pissed off to have to do the full subs warm down routine, if that’s still a thing and he wasn’t deemed to have played for long enough to excuse him!

Had Clarke been taken off immediately I’m sure there would have been a reaction, if only walking off head down. McK sensibly delayed until half time when he had an opportunity to explain his action. Good management.

I mean he wad the obvious choice to come off let's be honest.

Let's not stop reading into things that aren't there. The decision would have been explained and he would know it's the right thing to do.

It was dictated by circumstances, not any shortfall on his part.

And against that must be set the fact that he was preferred to Broadhead when Enciso had to be replaced.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Yeah 2/3 times in the second half he had a crunching tackle or two, pretty near the away fans, that were really strong and brave from him. Proper crowd pleasing moments (and as mate said on the way home, in the second half OH was infront of the away fans, all egging him on, so would have done his confidence the world of good)

Clarke will be fine, he played well yesterday & we all recognise that it was unfortunate circumstances that led to him being substituted.
I agree with others that his workrate, closing down & tackling has all improved, but I thought he looked much better in possession yesterday too; playing with more confidence & had a couple of delicious link up plays with (I think) Phillips, Delap & Townsend, which really showed the quality he has.
There is a Premier League footballer in there.

Not just that.

15 minutes to tell the side of the change and plan how to play that 2nd half.

Imo you can't just take him off immediately and put on Wolfenden and not have the opportunity to plan etc how it will effect things on and off the ball.

a niche perspective
