Bartosz Bialkowski has to be in the conversation. Very solid performer for us.

Not good enough with his feet for a KM team but great for a MM team in that era.

Don't say this lightly but that save at the end was the equal of the greatest save ever made by the immortal Gordon Banks

Obviously far too early to say, but is Paul Cooper our best ever? I'd put Richard Wright ahead of him.

Not sure about that. Cooper played for years for a team at the very top of both English and European football. Wright was good but only played one top flight season for us, before his career basically fell apart after he left us.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Personally I always felt Wright was error prone and a tad overrated.

Most keepers who have played for Ipswich since Paul Cooper would have done a job with that defence in front of him.

If we had signed Jennings (which was a done deal) or Shilton (which was not really on the cards as Robson wouldn't pay the money) we would have won the league three times.

I think we would’ve been more likely to have won the league if we’d spent any money we had on better squad players. That would’ve made a far bigger difference than replacing Cooper. It was replacing the likes of Butcher and Thijssen with Steggles and Tommy Parkin that cost us far more than having Cooper in goal.
Was Cooper as good as Jennings, Shilton etc. no, but he wasn’t far behind and in many other eras would’ve won a number of England caps. Also not forgetting that he won the supporters player of the season award in 1981 of all years.

Ridiculous thing to post.

But yes Cooper number one, Wright, Forrest, Sereni up there too.

Sereni is a controversial inclusion on that list.

Amazed that Wright hasn't had more mentions thus far.

I can't think of an era when Paul Cooper would have ever got near an England cap.

There were at least four keepers ahead of him when he was in his pomp.

I think he's the keeper I remember making fewest errors of any we've had.

generally agree, the only trait i remember was that he did acquire a habit of pushing the ball out to opposition forwards rather than palm(er)ing it out to the side/for a corner

If anything showed how far our standards have fallen, this post is it.

He's had one good performance - and didn't give away a silly goal. However he misjudged a race out from goal and in different circumstances could have conceded a goal or red card.

Stability and competence is underrated, but doesn't mean we need to overcompensate.

I saw Bailey, and I'd certainly put him second after, as you say, David Best.

I saw Bailey, too, but can't really remember his performances.

I would put David Best ahead of the others.

Really? Because he was certainly better than the likes of Scott Carson and Rob Green.

Bart only ever played seven games of 'top-tier' football and they were in the Polish league.

Lol you spotted my humour. But Cooper still no 1 followed by Craig Forrest. Apart from our biggest defeat at Old Trafford.

He didn't make many huge glaring errors but I do think his 'one of our own' status meant that the smaller errors and 'might have done better' moments were largely overlooked. We all see things differently though I guess.
